    1. I definitely appreciate this book since it is one of only a few books written about how libraries can help the poor patrons in their community. One of my issues with this book was that, in their examples of how poor people think or act, I felt like they were using "poor" and "Black" synonymously. For example, when explaining that time is valuable even for poor people, they decided to include "grabbing dinner at KFC" with a number of other stereotypical examples.     2. Some phrasing is problematic and falls into stereotype, but Holt & Holt also make an effort to not define vulnerable populations as any one thing. This generalized overview includes training staff, forming partnerships, financial means for the library to do this kind of work, and the intersections of equity of access, diversity, education, intellectual freedom, and technology.

Holt and Holt’s work is based on extensive research into services available to the poor in libraries around the country and on personal experience from a combined thirty years facilitating programs and services for the poor at St. Louis Public Library. The authors explain that despite widespread ambivalence towards poverty in the U.S library employees must shed this attitude if they wish to provide high-quality services to all residents of their town or city.     4. The main problem with this text is that the authors lose sight of their core audience (librarians, MLIS students). The first 58 pages could have easily been edited out of the book without any ill-effects. These pages are used mostly to state commonly known facts (e.g. "persons and families are poor when they lack money to buy goods and services.") or attempt to analyze politics and the poor (topics that made the authors seem out of their element).     5. There is definitely a need for this book, and it's the only book on the topic that I've come across. I agree with a previous reviewer that much of the information in the beginning chapters could have been left out. Most helpful to me were the descriptions of various programs that public libraries have tried. The St Louis Public Library has a program where they pay college students to be PTA's or personal technology assistants to patrons in the computer lab--this seems like a good idea to me. The [...]


    6. A concise, readable approach to an ongoing concern of public libraries. Written with sympathy and insight, it actually made me as proud to be a librarian as anything else I've read.
