    1. Actual rating: 4.5 čîčAs always, this was a very fast read, which kept me highly entertained the whole way through. I especially enjoyed that we saw a bit more of David Hunter's past. The only thing that bothered me, was how "inhumane" Monk seemed. I would have really liked to find more about him as a person, not just him as a criminal.

    3. I read this book a few years ago and could not remember the detailed content, all I knew was that I didnt like it very much. A dear friend and fellow bookaholic encouraged me to give it another go and I must thank her as I am forced to change my judgement now and admit that I really liked the book. The story is constructed very clever and the ending is not what the reader expected. As a lot of the story is placed in a moor which brings a certain kind of darkness and tension to the plot without t [...]

    4. I loved the first two books in the David Hunter series, The Chemistry of Death and Written in Bone, giving them both 4.5 stars, although I felt the third Whispers of the Dead lost some of it's edge, giving it 3.5.This fourth one fell even further away. The detailed forensic elements that made the first books so interesting were reduced to a couple of lines here and there, and despite the action being centred around the moors, the atmospheric qualities of the earlier books were also missing. It b [...]

    8. Beckett returns with another adventure, though this one does not put the focus on forensic anthropology. Instead it opens with Dr. David Hunter enjoying his work and loving his family. A serial killer who brought havoc to a small English community is caught, though many of the bodies never did turn up. After a brief escape, the killer is recaptured and all those on the case go about their daily lives. Eight years later, with Hunter living with the major changes the reader knows all too well (at [...]

    10. I'm a bit disappointed by the book. As I am a huge fan David Hunter and I really enjoyed the first 3 books, I was expecting to be dazzled by this one but it seemed a bit off, very different from the others and not in a good way. The thrilling sensation wasn't there, the characters left me cold so I hope the next one will be much better.

    11. An okay read. Nearly ditched it halfway because the characters were just so unlikeable! Not half as good as the earlier David Hunter books I've read.

    13. A great way to start my 2012 reading:)In this book we first get to see David Hunter in the days before his wife and daughter tragically died. 8 years ago, David was called in to help identify the body if a young girl who had been found buried in the peat on Dartmoor. It is believed that she was one if the victims of convicted killer Jerome Monk. Monk agrees to show them where the other bodies are buried and he is brought to the moors under heavy guard. But, just as Sophie the BIA on the case thi [...]

    15. Definitely not my favorite book in this series but I still enjoyed listening to it. It took the author quite a while to build up suspense and the plot was far away from being unpredictable but somehow I didn't really mind because the story was still interesting and never felt boring to me. The romance or not-romance was a bit annoying just as the fact that there are what felt like 328 cops that are all assholes and seem to have a rivalry with David Hunter which often made it quite a challenge no [...]

    16. The more I've read these, the more they annoy me in some respects. Theres always "the tingling feeling I've missed something but I let it go" and "when I thought everything was clear BOOOM a surprise". But nevertheless, I like these. Entertaining books!

    23. Liked to read Dr Hunter again. Liked the beginning. Was a good story but with a little to less forensics. The plot twists were mostly not that good and the ending not very satisfactory. Could have been better.

    26. So, the fourth book to feature forensic anthropologist David Hunter. Except this has almost nothing to do with forensic anthropology and is more of a typical crime thriller. It features the typical scenario of a convicted murderer taking the police to the location where he hid the bodies, in a remote scenario. Thank goodness that is not the main part of the novel because it is one of the most overused plots in crime dramas. The main part of the novel sees the murderer escaping from prison eight [...]

    28. Simon BeckettÔÇÖs latest novel ÔÇťThe calling of the graveÔÇŁ, the fourth in the Dr David Hunter series, evokes memories of Belinda BauerÔÇÖs award winning Blacklands. Both books are set in Devon; Blacklands in Exmoor and BeckettÔÇÖs ÔÇťThe calling of the graveÔÇŁ in Dartmoor ÔÇô both have vivid scenes of the encapsulating and unpredictable weather patterns, debilitating mist and fog making safety a real concern (and yet a benefit of the criminal mastermind) ÔÇô without the added pressure of a s [...]

    29. This was my favourite David Hunter so far. Funnily enough, it had less about forensic anthropology in than the others, but clearly Beckett is into his stride with this series and his hero now, willing to write a more character-based mystery. Set almost entirely on Dartmoor, this was bound to strike a chord with me because that's where I set my novels. Beckett's Dartmoor wasn't one I actually recognised, however, more austere and forbidding than I've ever found it, but then it's my home, spiritua [...]
