    2. Beautiful novel!. This is the only novel she has ever written, and it's one of the best novels in Malayalam literature! The characters are so complex and colourful."'Agnisakshi' (meaning, 'With Fire As Witness') is a Malayalam novel written by Lalithambika Antharjanam.[1] Originally serialised in 'Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly' , it was published as a book by Current Books in 1976. It tells the story of a Nambudiri woman, who is drawn into the struggle for social and political emancipation but [...]

    3. I underwent an emotional hijackingThe most heart touching, sincere and warming work I have ever read in my life. To me, two other books which came somewhere nearer to its greatness are Benyamin's 'Aadujeevitham' and Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. There are some relations which transcends our understanding of life. Love is truth. Truth is love. But Dharma may not always be the truth. Dharma may not understand love. The pursuit of love and truth by two people, entirely in different direction [...]

    7. The story of a family that decays with time, of people who are wiped out from the essence of memory and of love that stands the test of all trails to unite a long-lost family, Agnisakshi is a compelling story. It entices you to traverse along with the raging flames that consume the characters, to cry out with them as they lament their losses and go back into sweet reveries of bygone times.

    8. A powerful, dark page turner even with no suspense whatsoever. If only the author had given enough space for Tethi's point of view too. Leaves one a tad bit unsatisfied. Women. Walked all over. From time immemorial. Age, caste, class no bar.

    10. There is something catching in the very nature of this novel. Whenever someone talks about the Brahmins in Kerala, the imgaes associated with them would be the Chaturvarya system and the evil effects associated with it; or the people like Sankaracharya. And again if someone talks about the literary contributions made by them, mostly they would talk about V.T. Bhattathirippadu and the plays such as "Adukkalayil Ninnu Arangathekku". A rather serious student of literature might add some old poets s [...]

    11. The initial pages was magic to me. The way the author described the male domination in society and the female nothingness was compared to Ganga getting hidden in Shiva's jada. The tradition and its practices were well narrated and how it affected lives were amazingly and touchingly written. All love to the book.

    12. Story of an era in a women's perspective, that too in 4 different stages of a women's life as seen/observed by another women.

    13. Agnisakshi (1976) is a scathing attack on Kerala's deeply entrenched patriarchal system. In fact, the author Lalithambika Andharjanam brings out the aspects of both Men & women being inflicted by the wounds of this system. She reminds us that, Women are subjugated by both men as well as by the notion of horizontal patriarchy(women being overpowered by elder women).Nevertheless, men are subjected to the hegemony of Customs & practices which is manifested with religious sanction. The Novel r [...]

    14. I read the Tamil translation of the book by Sirpi, titled Agni satchi, published by Sakithya Akademi. Not sure if much is lost in the translation, it was a pain to finish the novel. “Thathri kuttyin smartha visharam” portrays the plights and sufferings of the Namboodiri women better than this novel . A big disappointment for me.

    15. I read the translation of this story in English by Vasanthi Sanakaranarayanan. Sharing some lines here which I felt still holds some relevance- Spoken by Devaki Manampalli, an "antharjanam" who fled from her husband's home unable to tolerate the suffocating atmosphere of the "illam" and the ways of its inhabitants steeped in ancient traditional rules of conduct and lifestyle- "I do not represent any particular community, religion or society. I am the representative of the womenfolk who have been [...]

    17. A re-read. But worth reading a lot of times. A walk through the social situation of Kerala during the independence movement and after. And about how things changed. From the point of view of two ladies who had to suffer. There is no opinion from the author about the changes. Is she leaving it to our hands to decide?I remember how we went through this book many times when this was the malayalam additional text book for 11th.

    18. An inspiring story of a woman who fought against ill practices in namboothiri community and lead freedom struggle against British, even though she had to leave her married life behind. Although there is love between the hero and heroine they had different views, due to which they had parted. Then end is really a touching one, when the hero says that they both had different views and selected different paths, but their goal was the same.

    20. A powerful, highly emotional novel that lives through the divergent, but eventually unifying concept of love, exploring the themes of sacrifice, of duties, of choices, of renunciation driven and influenced by the prevailing traditions and social structure.

    22. A very empowering story. It potrays the life of a brahmin woman.I als depicts the caste inequality prevailed in kerala.
