    1. Stories from an Imagery Domain ExpertFirst lets start with the good stuff - if you're interested in military and intelligence history of the Cold War this book should be on your shelf. The CIA, NSA and NRO employed imagination, creativity and daring in building a series of imagery, elint, telint and other systems that eventually became our National Means of Technical Verification. This allowed us to peer into the closed society of what was the Soviet Union and more than likely was one of the rea [...]

    2. An excellent, somewhat dry history of the development of new reconnaissance platforms from about 1954 to 1961, mainly the U-2 spy plane and the CORONA satellites. Brugioni covers everything from the first U-2 overflights to the resolution of the famous “missile gap” conundrum. Brugioni's book is focused on the actual operations of these platforms, the intelligence they collected, and the impact on US decisionmaking, with disappointingly little on the development of the technology involved. B [...]

    3. One of my favorite airpower history books. Brugioni presents Eisenhower’s ushering in of what he calls an “intelligence revolution,” where Eisenhower’s “foresight and imagination resulted in the reduction of military uncertainties, saved billions of dollars in weapons research, and may well have prevented a surprise nuclear attack” (xi). While there is certainly a focus on the strategic benefits on the intelligence innovations under Eisenhower, Burgioni gives insight into the operati [...]

    4. Compelling story of how Eisenhower contributed to our understanding of the world. Of course he did it to protect national security and that meant getting as much information as we could about our enemies (and, frenemies for that matter) through the various methods of aerial reconnaissance. That GPS we use to get to new location? Thank Ike. Ability to see approaching meteorological systems? Ike. But, the real story here is the work done by the photographic interpreters. The way they integrated in [...]
