    About "Garth Nix Steve Rawlings"

      • Garth Nix Steve Rawlings

Garth Nix was born in 1963 in Melbourne, Australia, to the sound of the Salvation Army band outside playing Hail the Conquering Hero Comes or possibly Roll Out the Barrel Garth left Melbourne at an early age for Canberra the federal capital and stayed there till he was nineteen, when he left to drive around the UK in a beat up Austin with a boot full of books and a Silver Reed typewriter.Despite a wheel literally falling off the Austin, Garth survived to return to Australia and study at the University of Canberra After finishing his degree in 1986 he worked in a bookshop, then as a book publicist, a publisher s sales representative, and editor Along the way he was also a part time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve, serving in an Assault Pioneer platoon for four years Garth left publishing to work as a public relations and marketing consultant from 1994 1997, till he became a full time writer in 1998 He did that for a year before joining Curtis Brown Australia as a part time literary agent in 1999 In January 2002 Garth went back to dedicated writer again, despite his belief that full time writing explains the strange behaviour of many authors. He now lives in Sydney with his wife, two sons and lots of books.

    1. Like The Fall, Castle is a short and easy read, aimed at reasonably young children. It's quite simplistic, but that doesn't stop it being fun. It's not very complicated, but that makes it a nice read to relax into, and I do still love Nix's worldbuilding. There's more there in the background than you think, when you stop and wonder about it: for example, now I'm wondering about the Crones, about what's up with the dream stuff, about the origins of the Castle, about what exactly Aenir is, about E [...]

    2. These books are so short and fun they make just brilliant reads. Following on from The Fall Castle follows Milla and Tal as they make their way back to the Castle and Tal's family. Only there are forces in the castle that are none to happy about Tal's return. There is a whole lot of mystery in this series and it's fascinating. Because not only do we have Sushin and his ulterior motives but the idea of missing people plagues the story. Rerem is missing but we get little hints that he is not as los [...]

    3. CASTLE brings our protagonists, the privileged Chosen boy Tal and the disciplined Icecarl (think Norse warriors) girl Milla, back from their adventures in the frozen wastelands of the Dark World into the Light and Shadow society of the Castle. Because the first book adequately introduced us to both of these polar-opposite worlds, we as readers were given the chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy a little character development in the totally-charming back-and-forth between Tal and Milla. These cha [...]

    4. I was extremely happy with the first book in the series, and so was a little worried if I would continue to like the series. It started off on a really good foot when I found this for 10 cents at my local used bookstore. SCORE! I loved the fact that the story continued straight off from the first book in the series. Tal and Milla continue their journey to get a Sunstone - well, two of them. And the ending? THAT IS THE EPITOME OF A CLIFFHANGER. HOW DARE YOU GARTH. MY FAITH WAS PLACED IN YOU.Regar [...]

    5. [Short and quick review from memory before I re-read and re-review at a later date:No memory of this book or the series, but maybe some snippets. Definite re-read and read of the rest of the series as a whole.]

    6. روند داستان به اندازه كتاب اول سريع نبود اما باز هم جالب بود ، مثل پلي بود كه بخواد كتاب يك و سه رو به هم وصل كنه و كارش رو هم خوب انجام داد نسبتا

    7. Tal of the Chosen and Milla of the Icecarls are held captive by the Shield Maidens. They are then brought before the Mother Crone of the Mountain of Light to figure out what to do with them. It is then decided that they can continue on their mission into The Castle.Once they reach the castle, Tal notices that all is not as it should be. He seeks the help of his Great-uncle Ebbitt, but is then captured by the Imperial Guards before they had the chance to find out anything. Tal and Milla are separ [...]

    8. At the beginning of the book, it didn't quite begin with the end of the first book. At the beginning of the book, Tal is falling from the tower and then is flown by his shadow guard to a hill where he meets Milla. And she wants to kill him. Icecarls are what they call themselves. An Icecarl tells Milla to stop trying to kill the boy. They take them back to there ship and they at first are a bit sceptical when they asked him to fix there Sunstone. And he did but it was close because the sunstone [...]

    9. Garth Nix's "Castle" from the "The Seventh Tower" series can only be described as an excellent followup to its predecessor. The book goes on to continue the journey our heroes find themselves on after the end of "The Fall", where they find themselves confronted by many dangers. It tells of how they finally make their way back to the place it all started: the castle. Among the two, Tal finds himself plagued with conflicting thoughts over his new partnership. Milla, on the other hand, finds hersel [...]

    10. Tal has bound himself to Milla, and vise versa, in order to get himself back to the castle. In exchange for his safe return, he must get Milla a Sunstone in order for her to take it back to the Icecarls. Getting back into the castle, since Tal hasn’t heard of anyone actually doing it, proves much more difficult than climbing up a mountain. He’s pushed to the physical and mental limits that even he didn’t know he had, not to mention he starts to question his own standing in life. When Tal a [...]

    11. Not much to say about this one. It's a great continuation to the series. Would get a 5 star but it's lacking something I can't quite put my finger on.More reviews at ReadingOverTheShoulder

    12. If it isn't obvious by now, each book in this series is short and ends in a cliffhanger, so I'm entitling this review chapter two. Castle, much like The Fall is mostly filler with a little plot progression. If each book in this series was cut down and put together into one big book, then it would be great. Instead, I'm left unsatisfied with each book. Will I read the entire series just to find out what eventually happens? Probably not.I was really looking forward to Castle because my favorite pa [...]

    13. One of the elements of writing in this genre that Nix is particularly gifted at is creating original fantasies and worlds. This series is no exception. However, in comparison to some of his other works, especially The Abhorsen Trilogy, the exploration of this world and the characters within is weak at best. The story is interesting because Nix presents the audience with a new mythology, but he rushes through the plot, circumnavigating what could be some really amazing explorations of the world h [...]

    14. Younger me: 5 starsAdult me: 5 stars*For the first book in a "child/teen/middlegrade/nostalgic" book, I am going with the rating younger me would have gone with, then if I read on in the series, I will rate the books what adult me believes it should be rated. If the book is a stand alone, I will go with whatever rating I feel most comfortable giving the book. Please note, I do not really think books should have an age limit. People should read what they want to regardless of the intended age gro [...]

    15. Castle by Garth Nix is a fast-paced fantasy adventure book that does a good job of keeping the reader satisfied. This book is the second book in a seven-book series called The Seventh Tower. The main character Tal has fallen away from his home and has been lost in an icy wasteland. After meeting many people, he tries to sneak back into his home, looking for a primary sunstone to save his family. He faces many dangers, finding a maze of hot tunnels, and ends up in a pit. I like the fact that this [...]

    16. After falling from the tower, Tal finds himself in a frozen waste land. He has never been out of the castle and didn't even know there was an ice world below. When Tal is captured by the ice people he has to make a dangerous deal with them or else be killed. He has to take along the ferocious Milla and capture another sunstone for her clan, but there is one problem: Milla hates Tal and would rather have him dead and Tal doesn't really have any intention of getting them a sunstone. As the two set [...]

    17. This is the second part in the Seventh Tower series started with the The Fall. The author does give some back story that covers the events but it is much better to read the first book in the series before you tackle this book. The book starts with Tal and Milla continuing with the quest started in The Fall. As the story develops we learn more about the history of the world the author has built, as world with Nix's trademark inventiveness and originality. The action is fast paced and the plot is [...]

    18. I went into this sequel with the characters and storyline a little stale in my memory, having shoved a 650 page work of “feminist” literature into my brain between the first and the second of the series. But Nix was quite gracious in recapping everything important from the first book in a short page. I was glad to find out a little more about Uncle Ebbitt, a character whom I enjoy. However, his character seemed a bit less put together than in the first book. I am pretty sure I’ll have to h [...]

    19. I really enjoyed this series of Science Fiction books by Garth Nix, which are aimed at a juvenile/young adult audience. The author does a good job of creating new, unfamiliar but believable societies, including the privileged Castle dwellers known as the Chosen and the seemingly more primitive and clan-oriented Icecarls who live out in the frozen wilds of the Dark World. Throw in the magical world of Aenir from which Shadowguards and Spiritshadows are bound (enslaved?) to Chosen at age 13 1/2, [...]

    20. If there was a list of favorite book covers, this would be one of them I remember the most, at least from this series. Having met an ally and friend Mailla, she and Tal travel back to his home and find that things are a littledifferent. And not in a good way. All because of a certain someone Tal had suspicions about during their first meeting. So they must find what has happened while Tal had "fell" and later on Milla stumbles into the Room of Nightmares. Such a catchy title isn't it? From what [...]

    21. I liked how this book was full of adventure and was very fast paced. Tal Is the main character who has fallen into the icy wasteland. He is on the mission to find a gem so that he will be able to save his family. On the journey, he gets himself into danger because the castle dwellers are after him. Something that happens is he gets stuck in this very hot maze and then he falls into a deeper pit. Also on his journey he meets the person who is from the weird place but has no idea about anything th [...]

    22. On a quest to get a sunstone for Milla's ship and a Primary Sunstone for Tal, the two of them cross the ice fraught with dangerous creatures to reach the Castle. Assisted by a map drawn by another Chosen who had also been outside of the Castle, Tal and Milla barely survive and get into the Castle only to be hunted by Sushin and his people. With Tal's crazy Great Uncle Ebbitt's assistance, Tal and Milla escape the Pit and the Hall of Nightmares and go to get the Codex, which Great Uncle Ebbitt sa [...]

    23. This was one of my favorite book series when I was younger, and it introduced me to fan fiction. It is also one of my (nearly) complete series. The concept of a world without the sun is very interesting and refreshing. The main characters act as they, in their established backgrounds/societies, should. They also have very good character development. Though a little dark for a children's/middle grade book series, the vocabulary used and the qualities of the characters are still appropriate. The p [...]

    24. So this series remains simplistic, so simplistic that I almost feel guilty for counting this as a separate book. And then I remember all of the Robert Jordan monsters I read this year, and I don't feel bad any more. It all averages out.I think of Castle as the next chapter to the story more than the next book, but even when targeting a different audience Nix continues to deliver enthralling worlds, realistic characters, and fantastic plots. He keeps things moving along at a good pace, yet doesn' [...]

    25. It is a huge surprise that, in the last 50 pages, I gave 4 stars to this book. In the beginning I was "meh" and now I am more like "yey". The Seventh Tower is something that I always wanted to read, but never found it available (unfortunately it is not THAT famous to get people's attention) but I finally got them! This book is short, but crucial. I think Tal and Milla are more mature and making better decisions while they get into the castle.Annnnd let's see what happens in Aenir!

    27. I wish Tal wasn't so absorbed in himself. It's always about him, and what he needs, and what he wants, and what will work best for him all of which are infinitely more important than what anyone else thinks, needs, or wants. There's also this sense of betrayal that never seems to leave Tal and that bothers me because at this point in the story I was really hoping for some real character growth from Tal. The cover is hideous. The only thing stopping me from covering the entire thing with taped on p [...]

    28. The book is an easy read with a unique and creative world. However, everything moves at rapid pace and little explanation is given. I found myself scratching my head and trying to remember what happened in the first book and who was who. I do not understand the concept of "Aenir" and I have no idea what everything is building too. Also, have no idea how the magic system works and there are a lot of "deus ex machina" moments. This is definitely not a standalone book and I guess I will read the ne [...]
