help us get through those hard times This is one of those books that belongs in a grade school class library Personally, I would have loved it as a kid So as always I try to talk about the things I liked about the story and the things I didn t like Positive Overall, I enjoyed everything about the book But if I had to pick a few things that stood out than the others, I think it would be the artwork While its simple in its design it did the job very well and as I read I wanted to figure out how each drawing related to the chapter Otherwise like I said above, the story is very well done.Negative One thing that I didn t care for was the point of view, however that said Gadot does it in a way that makes it feel like we are reading Andy s journal or diary so the POV makes perfect sense Another minor thing I saw was that he some pretty long paragraphs that I feel could have been broken up to make the reading a little easier, but by no means did they hurt the story in anyway And finally a personal preference Spoiler warning While the goal of the story is for Andy to become confident enough to ask Zoe out on a date, I would have rather him ended up with Sally as she was like him A nerd girl for a nerd guy But in the end, we find out that maybe Zoe is a little like Andy then we ever thought So maybe in book number two we will find out that it s like a Boy that sees ghosts dating a girl that sees ghosts In that case, I think it works out just fine.Again, I would highly recommend the book to anyone with kids or just kids in general And I personally am looking forward to number two flag 5 likesLike see review Jan 16, 2014 Molly rated it it was amazing review of another edition Fun, educational and sweetI got this book for my nephew but I wanted to read it first, just yourself first before others can.The tragedy of losing the one person he can really confide in and who fully supports him was so hard to read but it was handled very well Then add in the supernatural superpowers allowing Andy to speak with his grandpa again and you have an awesome story It was so heartwarming and helped with his grief Then in a neat twist to the plot, the girl he is in love with is in danger by an evil spirit and Andy has the ability to intervene and save her and her family He goes from being the reserved bullied nerd to the hero, how better to get the girl s attention I really enjoyed this book and my nephew is currently reading it and so far he is just as glued to the pages as I was Would definitely recommend this book to boys and girls alike, especially those that getting the girl he loves to notice him or battling evil spirits.I loved the characters Andy is a compelling narrator who draws readers into his world and into his life He is brilliant but shy, and he loves math I really enjoyed all the numbers mentioned throughout the story, as math was one thing Andy could take comfort in His parents care about him but often misunderstand him, and he has a rocky relationship with his sister But his grandpa is always there for him, almost literally once he becomes a ghost Then there s Andy s friend Tom, who is intelligent and helps Andy with not only trying to find a way to cure cancer but also finding a way to banish dark spirits I wish I had that kind of friend Tom was right at Andy s side as their friendship grew out of necessity I even liked Zoe, Andy s crush There was a great scene at the end that I hope hinted at something interesting to come in the sequel, which I eagerly look forward to reading. For such a simplistic style, this book is fast paced and tackles plenty of important issues kids deal with Making friends, dealing with bullies, trying to get your crush to notice you, making mistakes and resolving personal insecurities, handling the death of a loved one, connecting with your family, all alongside a couple uncommon supernatural issues as well The black and white drawings at the start of every chapter are cute and a little eerie sometimes, which only added to the book s compelling atmosphere There were a few layout issues, like paragraphs and spaces in awkward places, but they were minimal and didn t affect the story in any way.I highly recommend this book to any middle grade kid, especially those who might be reluctant to read This story will capture their imaginations and inspire their minds and hearts It will Grandpa has cancer and is going to die Andy is even alone Grandpa tells Andy he is ready to die, that it is his time He also tells Andy that he will never leave him until he gets Zoe to be his girlfriend Grandpa is true to his word, even in death Andy realizes he can still see Grandpa even though he is a ghost But it s not just Grandpa, Andy can see all kinds of ghosts walking the Earth Soon Andy realizes that Zoe is in horrible trouble He enlists the help of Tom and together they set off to save the day. What I thought At first I really didn t like Andy s character He was creepy and it sounded like he wanted to hurt people I really couldn t relate to him at first As I read further, I could understand why Andy was feeling the way he was He was completely tortured at school and he had no one to talk to I found myself turning from not liking Andy to rooting for him Andy just wanted to be himself and have people accept him The whole part of the plot where Andy develops a super power to see ghosts is a cool twist to the plot Mr Gadot s writing style, how the book is narrated, reminded me of Neil Gaiman s I like that the story deals with some very tough subjects, bullying, death of a loved one , but Andy handles them very well and he is a very believable character The other characters in the book are good, even the minor ones I like how Andy s character develops in the story The trouble that Andy finds Zoe in was an unexpected but very cool twist in the story not telling you what it is I found myself enjoying this story very much NOTE I got a free copy of this book Queen of the School, but he s certain she ll never go out with him, especially because he s too scared to even talk to her When his beloved Grandpa dies from cancer, Andy is sure his life is over, too But then something miraculous happens Grandpa returns as a ghost to help Andy discover his true potential and win over Zoe and his entire 6th grade class. The best part of this book is Andy, who is totally believable as a lovable loser He dreams of being one of the cool kids, of being invited to birthday parties, and of riding with Zoe on the back of his bike But he never really believes any of that is possible at least until his Grandpa starts haunting him Andy s relationship with this man is a beautiful one Grandpa helps build Andy s self esteem and gives him the courage to believe he can be than a math nerd and class geek So many kids his age have trouble adjusting to the social life of junior high, and this book can be a real blessing Andy succeeds because he learns to believe in himself, and that s a message any young reader can embrace. The weakest part of the book is actually the oddly dark spin it takes in the final section I loved the relationship between Andy and his Grandpa, and I totally bought into their ghostly meetings which reminded me a lot of the film The Sixth Sense But when Andy starts seeing demons, it lost me The final act of the story involves a threat to Zoe and her family, which enables Andy to become a supernatural hero and save the day It was a cute ending, and it s nice to see Andy recognized as a hero, but it didn t ring true for me.Additionally, Andy s crush on Zoe which seems totally based on how attractive she is, since we don t get to know her much beyond that causes him to be less than gracious to another girl in his class Sally clearly likes Andy, but she s a nerd, just like he is And when he tells his Grandpa that going to the movies with Sally would be social suicide, I really wanted something to happen that would show him how wrong that attitude is His negative view of Sally because she s not cool is no different from the negative way Andy has been treated by the cool kids in his class He wants to be a hero so he can win the approval of the popular crowd and the attention of the Queen of the School but I felt for Sally She and Andy are very much alike, but he never seems to get that.In spite of those criticisms, this is a book that young readers are sure to enjoy Andy is an identifiable character who will resonate with any kids who have ever navigated the mine field of junior high Gadot s prose is clear and easy to read, but he never talks down to his readers And even though this is definitely a message novel i.e believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams , it s never preachy or didactic I recommend it highly Please note I was provided a copy of this novel for review the opinions expressed here are my own flag 1 likeLike see review Jan 22, 2015 Harmony David rated it it with the Class Princess, is practically ignored by his family, but loves his grandfather very much At first I was a little uncertain, afraid it would just be some cheesy story.I m glad I kept reading, though, because the entire story was full of surprises There were various twists and turns in the story that kept me turning the pages with loads of anticipation. The characters were all interesting in their own way Andy, of course, was the child everyone can relate to The feelings of being underappreciated and misunderstood and neglected, these are feelings that many children experience The same goes for determination and love and bravery and the nervousness that comes from facing school crushes Andy experiences all of these and , and the entire story is told in a brilliant way that carries the spirit and imagination and, most importantly, the voice of children.he book is well written, and the illustrations are outstanding Andy s character is well developed, and you find yourself rooting for him to become the true Supernatural Hero he wants to be.Recommended flag 1 likeLike see review Jul 10, 2014 Kelsea David rated it really liked it review of another edition I really wish that this That was something I had a hard time with, especially since later in the book you find out he sees all kinds of ghosts You think he would be understanding of it all But really that was the only flaw that I saw in the book.It really felt like a good coming of age story, where Andy realizes that he needs to speak up and be himself and things will go his way I also really liked a lot of the philosophies that his grandfather taught him There are quite a few lessons to learn in this book, whether you are a child or an adult There were also some parts where I got to relive the frustrations of being a child and having no control Andy couldn t control anything, his parents didn t understand him and sent him to therapy, and when his sister bullied him his parents never took his side I had forgotten that feeling, the one that feels like you have no say over your own life I thought that came across very strongly here.Definitely a cute read I give it 4 out of 5 stars, because of the ghost inconsistencies, but other than that it was good flag 1 likeLike see review Sep 22, 2014 M Fonthaunt rated it it was amazing review of another edition This book is really cute and has plenty to offer that age, and sometimes I still do Things get even stickier for Andy when he goes through a traumatic event no spoilers here yet that leads to how he becomes a supernatural hero Another thing that makes this little book good is that just because he discovers new amazing things it doesn t solve all his problems overnight He still has girl trouble The story has suspense as it goes on and the reader has to find out whether or not Andy finds a way through the trauma, the bullying, and the everyday problems And, of course, does he win the heart of his true love The illustrations are also very good and enhance the story In addition, it is available as an e book or paperback and I am always on the lookout for books like this since some of the kiddos in my family have e readers and some
