away from her birth family in the capital city of the North, Soricium As a descendant of some of the most powerful Firebearers in history, she is expected to have manifested signs of strong magic but unfortunately the best she can do is light a small fire The well of magic within her has always remained inaccessible.Kept in the North well past when she should have been reunited with her family, self doubt and rumors plague Vi A deadly disease spreading across the Solaris Empire adds to her list of troubles. Her life is turned upside down as her magic awakens in an unexpected way and changes everything she thought she knew Revelations show the fate of not just the Solaris Empire but the world beyond may lay on her young shoulders The tutelage of a mysterious and enigmatic figure shows her wonders she s never knew and broadens her scope of the world at large The magical connection she shares with this stranger is deep and destiny propels their futures towards the same path.Dark tidings of rising evil and forthcoming doom darkens her days as she prepares to face the future and the Empire she stands to inherit.Attempts are made against her life, Her right to rule is scrutinized and the new magic within her proves to be unstable and hard to control, the daughter of Vhalla Yarl and Aldrik Solaris will be pushed to her limit and she will either make or break their world.I love the way Elise Kova broadens this world by introducing new fresh original content that blends well with the history already known Her imagination knows no bounds and it makes this book so much unique and amazing. There are so many charming and lovely characters, the every shiny ray of sunshine Ellene who is this series breakout character I just freaking love her so much , the steadfast Jayme, the awkward Andru who is quite an interesting character and my favorite precious Taavin who I will guard with my whole heart.Old readers and new will happily devour Vortex Visions, Elise Kova has once Disclaimer I received an Advanced Reader Edition of this book in exchange for an honest review For those of you that don t know, Vortex Visions is the first book in a new series in the same world as its sister series, Air Awakens If you haven t read Air Awakens or finished the series, there is bound to be some spoilers in here, but, as the author Elise Kova has openly stated, you don t have to read Air Awakens before reading Vortex Visions Also, my reviews tend to be a bit spoilery, so if you re not a fan of that I suggest going forward with caution I do, however, try to keep plot spoilers and big events out so not to ruin the book for anyone. For this review, I ve decided to split this into a few categories plot, world building, and characters.Plot I picked this book up excited not only because I got to revisit the Solaris Empire, but because I would get to see some of my favourite characters all grown up and meet a whole bunch of new characters to accompany them Instead, I got a lot of Vi complaining about her life, going to her lessons, and learning a bunch of new stuff that seems completely woven from scratch and not at all like the original series Perhaps this is what Elise Kova meant when she said you don t have to read Air Awakens.Quite honestly, and here s a spoiler so don t get mad when I say that the most interesting parts of this book were when Vi had run ins with death It s like with some fantasy series when the characters take long walks to get from place to place except there s no walking and it is all in the same general area but with a lot of thinking, extremely fake girl gossip, and complaining about how life isn t all that fair You re not 13, Vi, it s time to grow up a little. The disease, the White Death, was probably the best plot aspect of the whole book and something I hope to hear about in future books. The ending was okay It was much like I expected given the rest of the novel, but at that point, I reached a point where I didn t really care about most of the characters involved, which is not great I think it ll be a great way to push into book two A lot of loose ends that make me want to pick up the next book.World Building Of course, Elise never disappoints with her world building I absolutely can t complain about it And for those of you that read Air Awakens, were probably surprised about the inclusion of even world building in this I must admit, part of me is very upset that there is a bigger world than what we previously thought To me, it seems like that just makes the plights of the characters seem less worth it In other words, why would a bigger kingdom in a bigger part of the world not matter The magic aspect of Air Awakens was one of my favourite parts and by essentially belittling the powers of those in Solaris, it made me sad that Vhalla, who was seemingly so important, doesn t matter a whole lot in the grand scheme of the world I m really picky when it comes to magic systems and I happened to like how the magic system was in the first series, so the fact that that was all basically thrown out and replaced with the formulaic words are power and are what drive power idea is kind of irritating It s how most magic systems are in a lot of other YA fantasy, so I expect something different because I kept thinking about Eragon by Christopher Paolini the whole time Now that is a magic system with words that works.Since J.R.R Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, I think it has become a cliche that fantasy writers feel like they have to have elves in their writing 5 books written in the exact same universe before Vortex Visions and there is no mention of elfin until this book I understand that the world has expanded and that we are still learning about it, but this feels a little forced and I m not for it.Characters Vi As far as main characters go, I found herbland She came off as the typical character that was separated from the life she should have lived with very little freedom And of course, she likes to go out and hunt How very original I found her less individual and like a watered down version of her mother, Vhalla It s no wonder the Senate was unsure about her taking the throne seeing as she never set foot in their capital city, no one knew much about her, and her younger brother Romulin was living the life she essentially should have I feel very little sympathy for her cause.I think she did a lot of growing up throughout the book, though and I m genuinely interested to see where the next book takes the rest of her journey.Taavin He might have been my favourite part of the book He was mysterious and intriguing, so I can t wait to dig into his character Especially with how this one ended wink wink.Andru Poor, beautiful, misunderstood Andru is too pure for this world and deserves to be showered with love and attention He was made out as a bad guy almost the entire book, but he has so much to him.Ellene Perhaps my least favourite character Acts like the worst teenage stereotype I ve ever seen Quite disappointing, really.Last Thoughts I can t lie, I liked Air Awakens far than this and, for those of you that are reading this to decide where to start, I have to recommend you start there This series can wait for you, but I also think, despite the deep flaws in this story, it is truly worth the read There are enough characters that I care about, mainly from the original series, but a few in this as well, that I m quite attached to and would like to see how they end up flag 3 likesLike see review Nov 22, 2018 MRC Undertaker rated it it save the world and the people she loves.I am a massive fan of Kova and Air Awakens, so to be back in the Solaris empire was an absolute treat Vi is young and has such amazing potential she definitely reminds me of her mother I thought I knew this world well from the previous series, but VORTEX VISIONS expands on characters, magic, and the world, hinting at a wonderfully complex universe beyond the Solaris empire that I can t wait to explore. There were definitely some things that could have been improved The first half of the book contained revelation after revelation, it felt too fast and didn t allow the reader or Vi to appropriately process the sweeping changes and plot points By halfway though, the novel hits its stride and becomes far proactive in both plot and characters The main characters were slow to develop depth Until Vi interacts with Taavin, I wasn t quite sure about her character Vi and her friends eventually start to attain complexity, but it was difficult to feel an initial connection However, by the conclusion of VORTEX VISIONS, I was 100% in and ready for the next adventure.Although you can technically read VORTEX VISIONS without reading the original series, I think you might miss some of the magic and significance of this sequel The world is fundamentally altered in this book and you would never know that if you hadn t experience the complex story at its foundation established in the Air Awakens series.Kova s fans will not be disappointed in Vi and VORTEX VISIONS If you re a new reader, I d recommend taking everything in stride and hanging in there until the second half of the book where the conflict and plot attain substance and pacing. Also, I am already in love with Taavin and need , please and thank you I received an ARC of this book from the persistent and resourceful Her love for her family and friends was the best Vi s growth really shined through in the latter half of the book Her training with the mysterious Taavin was invaluable There is currently tenderness between them but a romance is definitely on the horizon I can t really talk about the magic system without spoiling parts of Vortex Visions so I will just say, what Elise has created is amazing and clever The glyphs, their construction and how they work is a really cool and logical concept.Once again Elise introduces a strong cast of supporting characters to us Vi would not be where she was without her almost sister Ellene and faithful friend Jayme s help Even Andru proved to be useful Though I have to say I knew of his importance right away Romulin, Vi s twin new magic is to educate the main character, have them go to lessons Often those lessons can feel repetitive or boring Not in this book They way Vi understood this magic, the way she learned it was fascinating These characters Elise used Character already adored from the previous series to highlight the new characters I was hesitant when I saw Jax in this book so early How was I supposed to give anyone else a chance when my Fav was right in front of me But seeing Jax care so much for Vi just made me care for her too And then Vi in her rebellious and slightly naive way won me over She was sarcastic, which can you blame her if she was raised around Jax She was salty at having to uphold a promise made by her parents before she was even born, but again can you blame her And her squad is one hundred percent goals Ellene was a typical teen Somewhere between mature and childish, but always there for her friends no matter what Jayme was steadfast and strong Ready to guard her friend, her crowned princess with her life Jayme was the one we learned the least about She was a mystery I was just unable to crack Taavin I was not so sure about And I m still not There was not too much about him, but I m eagerly waiting to learn And Andru Oh my Andru, I tried to dislike him, but his awkward charm won me over I knew I would love him from the start I m not going to say much on the story I would hate to give any of the suspense away I will say it was so unique and exciting There was just enough from the old books for an old fan like me to pick up, but plenty of new things for everyone relatable A compelling storyline and a new type of magic THAT IS SO SUPER COOL My Review Thank you to Elise who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review Let me start by saying reading the Air Awakens series is not necessary to understand this book world but I HIGHLY recommend it You definitely notice a couple little things from the previous books that are in this book and wellGIANT spoiler since this book is about Vhalla and Aldrik s the main characters in Air Awakens daughter So if you had wanted to read the Air Awakens series Golden Guard series I would recommend reading those before this book Now onto the main event, this book was absolutely incredible I absolutely loved being back in this world I say that in quotes because during the Air Awakens series we got to see a lot of the main continent but one part we didn t fully see was the North, which is where this book takes place And while we do see a couple of familiar faces, this book is solely focused on Vi and her journey When I initially read the Air Awakens series I immediately fell in love with Vhalla and Vi was no different Vi is a 17 year old woman trapped in an arrangement made by her parents before she was even conceived For the first 14 years of her life, Vi is to live in the North where she has been hated since before she was born because of the actions of her Grandfather But 14 years have come and gone and now at 17 Vi is beginning to wonder if she will ever be allowed to go home and be with her family Between her difficult magic, being trapped in the North and now with the arrival of a senator s son here to assess her fitness to rule, Vi herself starts to have her own doubts But while out hunting with her two best friends, Vi discovers some very interesting things about her magic, things that could cost her the throne if she s not careful Vi will have some very hard decisions to make that could not only affect her empire but the entire world You ll have to read this wonderful book for yourself to find out , but I promise it will not disappoint Vi is absolutely one of my new favorite characters She is so relatable and comes off as a person you want to be friends with, even though she s heir to this giant empire and has this amazing magic Can I just say how amazing it is that she loves books and maps I mean it s not unexpected given who her parents are but it makes me love her even Plus, while Vi may put on this mask of perfect heir that makes no mistakes, underneath it all she is constantly doubting herself while struggling to live up to these expectations that she will be this magnificent firebearer, like her father and his ancestors I know I can relate in that aspect, well minus the whole magic part but a girl can still hope for a spark of magic right Speaking of magic, I swear Elise must have some magic stored away to create a storyline this enthralling I was hooked from the first couple of chapters and had a hard time putting this book down This book is filled with constant action, adventure, friendship and yes in true Elise style even some romance swooning Everything about this storyline felt and read seamlessly I don t want to give too much away but one of my favorite parts of this book was Vi s magic It was unlike anything we have seen in the previous series and unlike anything I have read in other books I just want to know so much about it and cannot wait to learn about it alongside Vi I have always been blown away by Elise s world building and this book continues on that trend She takes this world that you think you know from the previous series and then BAM she blows your mind with a whole new side to it The creativity and ingenuity that goes into designing this world is just beyond anything I have ever read And then when you tie it into her writing style, you feel like you are with Vi exploring ancient ruins or running through this amazing living fortress that honestly sounds like the coolest treehouse ever I have a feeling this is only the beginning of a MAJOR world exploration that is going to continue throughout the series I seriously cannot wait for the second book I cannot recommend this book enough If you are a fan of Elise s previous books, especially the Air Awakens series, you are going to fall head over heels in love with this new series as well If you haven t read Elise s other series I would HIGHLY recommend checking this book out and her others if you are a fan of elemental magic, strong relatable characters and beautiful world building This new series is off to a spectacular start and I am so excited to see where it goes in book two flag 2 likesLike see review Jan 16, 2019 Olivia Farr rated it it was amazing Shelves other reviews Vortex Visions is a fantastic spin off, it works as a stand alone and things are explained in this book There s also a different premise that makes it unique from the first series and whole in its own right Here, we follow Vi, the crown princess who has lived her whole life in the North of Solaris She desperately wants to be back with her family in the South, and while she had anticipated this move when she was 14, she is now 17 and has no idea when she may be reunited with them.Vi is also troubled about her magic She can feel it but cannot access it, as she has not yet had her Awakening Her lessons are becoming difficult as she is unable to tap into her fire related powers On top of that, her friend and courier, Jayme, has arrived bringing news from her family and traveling with a young man Andru who is going to evaluate her for the Senate, who will be deciding whether she may rule, despite being next in line for the crown She begins to realize the full spectrum of problems which may face her when she returns South, and the young man carrying the burden of her evaluation is the first sign of things to change.Soon, Vi realizes she is facing even bigger problems The white death is spreading throughout Solaris, and her powers are growing quickly She becomes caught in a much larger web of problems than just involve her country Soon, Vi is challenging everything she knows and finds herself moving towards something important than she could have imagined. With magic, friendship, mystery, and a little touch of romance hopefully to grow in the future , this book moves with a fast pace, building a new story line and capturing the reader within its pages Notably, the book has an open ending, so you will definitely be wishing for the next book asap I really liked Vi and the other main characters, and I look forward to learning about them and the larger world in future books Vi really grows and matures throughout the course of the book she begins as a somewhat immature due to being so sheltered 17 year old and grows into a stronger and mature young woman throughout the story It s a fascinating transformation to watch Learning about her magic, which is also different and new to us , is also really interesting Add on to all that the mysteries about what is going on and how she plays into this destined future, and the book is easily a page turner.I think it does help to have read the previous books to have some additional context, but things are explained in this book pretty well particularly the elemental sorcery I do wish there was information about roles of guards Jayme is not particularly attentive and separates from Vi at different points despite being her guard, maybe because Vi can mostly protect herself with magic and about the rulers powers how these are intertwined complimentary around Solaris However, the book was still really fascinating and I enjoyed reading it a lot I assume this will be expanded, along with the other elements introduced in this book, in the future.I highly recommend this book to lovers of YA fantasy this new series is sure to be a hit Please note that I received an ARC from the author All opinions are my own flag 2 likesLike see review ability to weave a story is unlike anything I ve seen At this point she could write a cookbook and I d be estatic about it.I d red her sorcerers, her magicians, her cimeras and her dragons Her firebearers, her windwalkers and now her lightspinners And through each and every one of her books I fell and in love And I got and engrossed into the stories she is telling Her effort and her labour of love Her desire to put forth the best she had to offer And her striving to never disappoint her readers And Vortex Visions is just another one in what is now becoming a long line of her amazing works Eighteen years ago, Vi s father struck a bargain with the chieftain of the North In exchange for peace, Vi Solaris was to be a ward of the North, and upon turning fifteen she was to return to the South and join her family Three years passed the due date, Vi is still a ward of the North with nothing but question that she can t get answers to But when she awakens, and finally unleashes her power she finds out the true reason for why she was not reunited with her family And that knowledge comes with a terrible price And decision that she will have to make On one side lies her destiny and the throne she was groomed her whole life to inherit, and on the other safety of the world The world she only recently found out is much bigger than she and everyone else in the Empire was led to believe.Another 5 read form Elise And I can t stress enough how amazing this book is While it does continue of the original Air Awakens series it is a standalone book start of the series If you re looking for a gripping, thrilling, exciting read, do yourself a favor and pick this book up Like I said, at this point I d read a cookbook if Elise was the one who wrote it, and this book is no exception to her awesomeness Pick It Up You will not regret it A 5 read from cover to cover flag 2 likesLike see review Jan 12, 2019 Moa The Reading Faery rated it it was amazing I ve read a lot of But not only did I love Vi, but all the side characters, as well They were all layered, had their own stories, and made me want to know about them And the friendship Vi had with her friends was truly inspiring. As much as I loved the characters, the world building was the true highlight I knew from before that Kova is the queen of world building, but this was even better It s so intricately woven, making the world feel as real as the real world I loved getting a glimpse into of the world from Air Awakens, and I m excited to see of it in the other books And the plot was well paced, keeping the reader in suspense the entire time.Kova has truly outdone herself this time, with an imaginative world, captivating plot and compelling characters I loved unraveling all the layers of this world It was an emotional roller coaster, completely immersive, and utterly breathtaking Books like this one remind me why I love fantasy so much flag 2 likesLike see review Jan 23, 2019 Alexandra rated it
