say that because the author did attempt to tackle a serious subject but I think the execution was slightly off The first half of the book worked better than the second half because you are curious about what secrets Maisey s mother is hiding By the time everything is revealed it almost feels underwhelming There were parts of the story that I thought were underdeveloped towards the end I thought the introduction of Tony and his family didn t feel natural although at least there was an interesting backstory there I think the best way to describe this book is it feels like a Lifetime Channel movie The plot is interesting enough for you to watch, or in this case read, over the course of an afternoon, but it really isn t anything you haven t seen before I do think some people will connect with this book than others given the subject matter that is of a theme in the second half of the book Overall, it was a decent selection for my free Kindle First ebook flag 89 likesLike see review Whisper Me This by Kerry Anne King I was speeding through it and expected to really like it, unfortunately it ended up falling a little short of the mark for me In Whisper Me This Maisey has never quite lived up to her mother s expectations She has held a series of dead end jobs, and has never gotten married two things that her mom desperately wanted for her to change When Maisey finds out her mom is in a coma and her dad might be charged with abuse and neglect, she goes back to her childhood home with her daughter Elle and must come to terms with her confused father, what to do about her mom, and what she feels are her own shortcomings and failures There is a mystery theme in this book that kept me reading and turning pages The book switched between Leah s journal Maisey s mom , Maisey, and a love interest for Maisey Tony Tony is holding onto his own guilt and secrets, as well as Maisey finding out she has a sister that her mom made her believe was a figment of her imagination Slowly the story unravels, both the story of Maisey s mom and Tony s story, and it was definitely a slow burner of a story overall The biggest thing for me was that I wasn t a huge fan of Maisey and didn t really find myself rooting for her, at least not at first She seemed incredibly flighty and childlike even though she has a 12 year old daughter she is supposed to be raising but we find out there is a reason for the way she acts I did think she redeems herself towards the end, even though I wanted to smack her over the head a few times to stand up for herself I think this was a pretty realistic description though so you can t really be mad at her too much She is dealing with some pretty tough sh t in this book.Which brings me to the next thing, so many trigger warnings for this book and they all deal with abuse Verbal abuse, physical abuse, etc all directed at females or children I have to admit it was a pretty tough book to read even though the author tries to infuse hope into it The end is uplifting than the majority of the book, and I found myself in tears than once Just know it is a very tough read despite the hopeful bits.Final Thought There was just something about this book that didn t sit quite right with me, but hell if I can articulate what it is The mysteries that unravel just produce even pain, and although I felt slightly better at the ending, the overall feel of this novel was pretty melancholy to me Well written, but read at your own risk I think I just found it too sad and frustrating, but that s just me and other people will probably really like this book and the message it delivers flag 45 likesLike see review View all 3 comments Sep 05, 2018 leslie hamod rated it it was amazing review of another edition For once, I am speechlessA tale descriptions of trauma and its aftermath are good This book doesn t shy away from dissecting the ugliness of learning how to break free and recover from abusive relationships I really appreciated this nuanced view, and that it was integral to the characters and not just window dressing to make them sympathetic. However, while there are good messages here, I found Maisey s mother appalling She s abusive too, but that s glossed over and never addressed in the book, and this really bothered me.To me, Maisey was also a terrible character She came across as unstable and flighty, and I kept wondering how she d managed to raise a child to the age of twelve without burning the house down or getting either or both of them killed Maisey seemed to be trapped in a stunted adolescence, and I didn t think she showed any real growth by the end of the book.In addition, I didn t find the big family secret to be all that well done or all that intriguing, and the reconciliation was too neat, like an after school special I could also have done without the romance flag 3 likesLike see review Jul 25, 2018 Jennifer Bertoldo rated it it was amazing review of another edition Excellent book flag three fourths of the way through it, I had to take medication to prevent an anxiety attack I suppose I should have stopped then but I knew from the tone of the book there would be a happily ever after ending, so I continued to plow through to the end I gave the book three stars because it was well written I felt I had to give the author her due, even though I did not find reading the book an enjoyable experience.About that happily ever after ending I completely disagree with the author about the romantic partner she provides for the main character, Maisey I think Maisey would have been much better off with someone who came from a family with absolutely no history of abuse I say this because I have been married for 38 years to a man whose parents never once so much as raised their voices in front of him If they had disagreements, they took them to another room, shut the door, and worked them out quietly Pretty much exactly the opposite of the way I grew up My husband has been a steadying influence for me, and that is why our marriage has survived this long. The author depicts Tony as someone who was so traumatized by abuse that his worst fear was becoming an abuser She mentions that Tony had counseling when he was a child, but there is nothing to indicate that he was undergoing counseling during the period of the novel, even though he was having flashbacks and nightmares and insomnia In my opinion, Tony is at a high risk for becoming the thing he most fears, simply because he has not dealt with his past One cathartic moment is not enough He should be in ongoing therapy, possibly for the rest of his life And he should wait until he is in a much stable mental condition before even considering a romantic relationship.I realize the author has worked in the mental health field I have no idea of her personal background, or whether she has dealt with abuse in her own life The above is my opinion based on my own experiences This book has taught me to read the descriptions carefully and read between the lines if necessary Err on the side of caution Stop at the first sign of a trigger I would advise others like me to do the same flag 2 likesLike see eyes I really liked Kerry Anne King s writing The story was interesting and moved along at a good pace The mystery unfolded bit by bit which kept me anxious to keep reading However, I felt the story fell apart at the end Tony, her romantic interest, came across as a bit too damaged by his past And the big confrontation at the end seemed to drag But once that was over, the story wrapped up too quickly in a nice tight bow It seemed like her editor told King the book was too long so she cut out the last few chapters Overall, however, I enjoyed reading it flag 2 likesLike see review Sep 09, book full of mystery and secrets like promised It is a book about domestic abuse It leads you to believe in the beginning that there is mystery but the answers soon come to light and to me the whole 1. 3.5 starsI m kinda on the fence about whether this is a 3 star or 3.5 star read but since it did hold my interest I will round up Maisey receives a phone call that her mom is in a coma and her father might be charged with abuse and neglect She races to her childhood home in Washington with her daughter and attempts to figure out what the heck is going on and why her father was trying to destroy family records As Maisey digs around for answers she discovers she has a long lost sister Like I s 3.5 [...]

    2. 5 rounded up When I first started Whisper Me This by Kerry Anne King I was speeding through it and expected to really like it, unfortunately it ended up falling a little short of the mark for me In Whisper Me This Maisey has never quite lived up to her mother s expectations She has held a series of dead end jobs, and has never gotten married two things that her mom desperately wanted for her to change When Maisey finds out her mom is in a coma and her dad might be charged with abuse 5 rou [...]

    4. Promising start. First read, July novel Story of hope s and dreams of teenager, growing up in dysfunctional family Abused since birth Good plot, but I missed or author missed to convey me the point she is making Liked author s writing style.

    5. For Pete s sake.I knew this book was about all sorts and types of domestic violence I once upon a time lived through several abusive relationships, so I wanted to see how this book handled it It was a free book, thank heavens Major issues.1 Do NOT have a character come to bury her mother, take care of a father with the beginning states of dementia, and by day two talk about your tingly bits feeling something for someone you just met a day ago Girl, you re crazy 2 Do not allow your 12 yea For Pet [...]

    6. Whisper Me This was a solid 4 stars for me An interesting book that centers around a woman named Maisey who heads to her childhood home after discovering her mom is in the hospital and her dad is in a serious confused mental state Maisey has much to contend with, including uncovering a family secret that will change her life forever The big secret wasn t all that shocking and the book was somewhat slower paced than I liked, but I would still highly recommend it to readers that like fictional Whi [...]
