for an honest review World War II has ended, and Barrie Anne Blythe is content spending her days with her dog Willow on her farm in Washington Yet while she is content, Barrie Anne is grieving Having been abandoned by her husband Will during the war, she also lost their son just after he was born However, one morning, after seeing a strange glow coming from the ocean near her farmhouse, Willow comes home carrying a bundle with a baby girl inside of it Barrie Anne is delighted but also cautious for this baby girl is not ordinary she can see that immediately I won t spoil that Enlisting the help of her Aunt Charlotte, both women try to piece together the story behind the baby that has come into their lives while also being wary of how she is presented to the outside world The Witch s Kind is told in Barrie Anne s present day with flashbacks to her time before and during World War II as she goes to college, falls in love, gets married and is left by her husband What emerges is this beautiful story of love, loss and family There is a bit of magic here as well, and I don t just mean in the writing I will say that some may be disappointed by the amount of magic in this book it is light and sparse, but it is believable in the world into which you have entered Barrie Anne can be very irritating in her earlier flashbacks but this is simply because she is a na ve young woman Her growth is evident as the story progresses and she faces some challenges The Witch s Kind is a truly lovely book I loved the writing style, and I so badly wanted to be living in Barrie Anne s cozy farmhouse I do wonder if her name pays homage to the wonderful Anne of Green Gable series Susan Barry, Anne Shirley, Gilbert Blythe I think fans of Paula Brackston and Suzanne Palmieri would enjoy and the past 1939 1946 , the way we got the story of how Barrie Anne got to where she was and how she and Emma were getting on was delightful and unique Louisa Morgan did a fantastic job of portraying not only the trapping and limiting patriarchy of that era but also the strong women who would not conform to what they were expected to do during that time period I appreciated the strength both Charlotte and Barrie Anne displayed, Barrie Anne especially when having to deal with emotional abuse and physical abuse Initially, I was frustrated with Barrie Anne for conforming to the ideal house wife but over time, she came into herself and her self confidence as she realised and that she could trust that feeling within her, the feeling telling her Will was not good but trying to do her best, to do her duty in a way by sticking it out until Barrie Anne knew that her unborn child could not be surrounded by Will and his damaging behaviours In those days, so many women would take what they were given, whether it be black eyes and abuse or neglect but at the end I appreciated her actions and the lengths incredible character growth she went through to walk away It paints a very vivid picture of a mother doing anything to protect her flock The magic too, while subtle and not overpowering was unique, and I enjoyed a fresh take on it in this world I am slightly curious about Emma, I realise it s likely an intentional move to leave it open ended, to not give all the answers and let the readers form their own thoughts and opinions and again, it is also refreshing to not be told everything I myself, am convinced Emma is an alien.Overall, this was an easy read and one I enjoyed since I was able to finish it in a couple of hours and not be bored I enjoyed taking Barrie Anne s journey with her, from a doe eyed woman besotted with a man who seems like he has everything to the strong, independent woman who can not only take care of herself, but can protect her daughter and would go to any length to do so flag Like see review Jan 21, 2019 Carol Dass rated it it was amazing review of another edition Shelves arcs, netgalley read This was a terrific story and now I cannot
