tries, the head space he continues to occupy ensures she is trapped and imprisoned by the past, despite Ness s death Conrad Carter, a travelling window salesman has been shot 3 times, his computer has been shot 12 times His pregnant wife, Evie, a school teacher, is arrested for his murder at the scene by police, with gunshot residue on her hands DD Warren is now supposed to supervise her team of investigators, but her heart is in actively working cases, and she is drawn to the case, because years ago she was part of a team that looked into the accidental shooting of Evie s father, a famous mathematical genius, by a shocked 16 year old Evie Was she wrong about Evie, surely this latest killing merits a revisit of the past Flora is an unpaid confidential informer for DD, she is watching the TV news when she sees a picture of Conrad Carter, to her horror she recognises him as a man connected to Ness, who she met in a bar as part of her traumatic history DD does not know what to make of this, and whether it has any impact on her present investigation Flora has stubbornly refused to speak of the past but the once with FBI therapist Samuel, she is now forced to revisit and relive the past, overtaken by guilt as she is confronted with the possibility that she was not the only victim of Ness, it looks increasingly likely that other women were too Flora goes rogue as she hooks up with true crime enthusiast, the computer analyst Keith Edgar, and contacts FBI SSA Kimberly Quincy, the female agent responsible for tracking down Ness and freeing Flora Quincy and the FBI have never got far with unearthing information about Ness and his criminally deviant past, with Flora opening up and the additional thread of Conrad to folow, Quincy arrives in Boston to join DD s team, despite initial resistance from DD DD is overjoyed at getting stuck in a case that proves to be a twisted tangle of a strange mess that tests her mettle, with firebugs, the dark web and , and where nothing is as it seems, where she is surrounded by, in her own words, by nutjobs with no respect for law enforcement. The narrative is delivered from the perspective of Evie, Flora and DD, all incredible women in their own right What I particularly loved was the development of Flora in whom at long last chinks of light and hope begin to open up as she faces her past by once again immersing herself in it and starts to talk about it Evie is a fascinating creation, a woman with a dysfunctional family hell bent on keeping dark secrets, as indeed did her husband DD has a chaotic and loving family with Alex, her 5 year old hyperactive son, Jack, and his dog, Kiko, whilst she chases the bad guys with enthusiastic gusto, its what she lives for This is a fantastic thriller, with all the exciting elements that guarantee that the reader will be enthralled, turning the pages as fast as possible to find out how it all ends Gardner makes it clear that she is not finished with these characters which has me eagerly anticipating her next novel Highly recommended Many thanks to Random House Cornerstone for an ARC flag 86 likesLike see review View all 5 comments Paromjit Judy wrote I love this whole series s newest, and imo, fascinating share the lead character, Flora Dane, are in for a fast paced, satisfying read. One of the things I like best about Ms Gardner s writing is that even if you are new to her books, they re still a good read It s no small feat to hand out enough backstory to hook new readers while not boring longtime fans, but she always manages to do so, which is why I ve been reading her books since The Perfect Husband pre D.D Never Tell opens with an anxious, pregnant Evie Carter returning home to face her husband Conrad.Minutes later, the police arrive Conrad has been shot three times His computer has been shot twelve times And Evie is holding the gun.Evie is arrested for Conrad s murder and D.D is on the case turns out, Evie shot her father about sixteen years ago, but claimed it was an accident It was one of D D s first cases and she s never been totally convinced that Evie s father died accidentally, making her very suspicious. Then Flora appears near the crime scene Turns out, she s pretty sure she s seen the dead husband, Connor, before and under the worst possible circumstances In Never Tell, Flora has to go back to memories of a time she doesn t want to revisit even as she can never forget I won t say because I think Flora is Ms Gardner s best character yet, and her story is very much worth reading.Of course, it s great to read about D.D again while motherhood has mellowed her out a little, she s still a no nonsense, incredibly perceptive cop who is willing to examine every angle she needs to even if she finds that each angle leads to another Or three.Rounding out the cast of main characters is Evie, who is actually imo almost as fascinating as Flora She s so smart, but has spent her entire life living in the shadow of her genius father who died at her hands You can guess that twist, but it still works And it turns out that marriage to Conrad was not easy but exactly whywell, that s one of the reasons why Never Tell is one of those books you start, vowing to read only X number of chapters only to end up reading way, way than that.Longtime fans and new readers are in for a gripping and well done thriller with Never Tell While it s not perfect it is very, very obvious who drives the muder y murdery aspects of the plot it is very, very good 4.25 rounded up to five because Flora And also because I would have preordered this about three chapters in except I ve already done that because Ms Gardner s books are just that good flag 26 likesLike see review View all 15 comments Jan 24, 2019 Linda Strong rated it it was amazing review keeping secrets from her husband and what she finds when she arrives home after work one day means she will never have the chance to be totally honest with him. This book kept my interest focused on the book from first page to last The characters in this story are written to be real people and that s sometimes a hard thing for authors to do The information necessary to provide the solution to the crimes is revealed in natural ways so that it feels as if someone is actually finding the information in real time The investigative forays into the dark web were fascinating to me because I have absolutely no idea of how those things work Lisa Gardner is doing a masterful job of handling the characterization of Flora Dane Her character could go oh, so very wrong, but Gardner hasn t let that Warren and Flora Dane back together in a powerful mystery that kept me glued to the pages The story is told in three voices D.D Flora, and Evie Carter.Evie Carter s husband is shot three times at his her interest is amplified because 16 years ago, Evie killed her father That death was ruled accidental D.D vividly remembers this case and how sixteen year old Evie behaved at the time Now D.D has to wonder whether the death of Evie s father was really accidental. When Flora sees the news and recognizes the photo of Conrad Carter as a man who met with Jacob Ness, Flora s kidnapper, she is stunned There is a lot of back story on how D.D and Flora met and how Flora became a vigilante and D.D s confidential informant Flora s first appearance in this series begins with Find Her Evie, who has been subject to suspicion and media scrutiny for years, tries to figure out what happened to her marriage and to her life The answers are surprising, and Gardner carefully introduces them while still keeping the reader in suspense.Gardner s introduction of Flora Dane into an established series was a brilliant move In Never Tell, she introduces two new characters that will give her a broader range of stories to tell Evie s character has enough depth to make it possible she may appear again in future works and the computer geek and crime buff Keith Edgar will provide another aspect to future works.Never Tell is an excellent, well plotted, and fascinating addition to the series I had to slow myself down with this one it moves quickly and skillfully from one voice to another, but without leaving each chapter as a cliffhanger I finished each chapter ready to switch to a new perspective, not frustrated at being cut off in the middle of a story. If you ve already been involved with these characters, you will love this one If not, it functions well as a standalone, but you might want to go back to Find Her to get all of the background on Flora Dane.Recommended.NetGalley Penguin Gardner sits down to write a book, she gets better and better I have never read a Gardner book I didn t like, but Never Tell was jammed pack with some of my favorite characters and a story line that kept me on my toes.Never Tell follows our favorite Boston detective, D.D Warren as she investigates a murder of a man in his home office But it turns out the wife of said man is a women who was involved in another in home shooting 16 years earlier D.D doesn t believe in coincidences In comes our favorite C.I , Flora Dane, to inform us she knows said dead man in home office Plot thickens Everyone is a suspect Everyone seems to be lying about something.Never Tell has so many twists and turns I felt my head spinning at times I had no clue what so ever who was behind everything going on and I loved how it all tied together in one way or another in the end It appeared to be so many crimes and there was something in common with all of it The intricacies that Gardner can write without any flaws is pure talent and Never Tell is jam packed with multiple stories intertwining into a finely crafted braid.D.D Warren is one of my favorite characters by Gardner, but we got a glimpse of SSA Kimberly Quincy as well in this novel These two powerhouse law enforcement officers led us on a psychological ride that will keep you guessing until the very end Their personalities feed the story and you ll find yourself laughing, gasping, and angry at different moments throughout As usual, Gardner s writing style will snare you in, not wanting to put the book down, and flows smoothly from start complex and convoluted and filled with intrigue and suspense Lisa Gardner tells her story by dedicating various chapters to the three main characters, D.D Warren, Flora Dane and Evie Carter I felt this approach made a lot of sense due to the complexity of the plot This is the first book I have read by this author and I liked it so much I plan to read of Lisa Gardner s stories flag Like see picking up the shotgun and beginning to shoot his computer, as the police arrive Immediately, she is arrested for his murder as she is literally holding the smoking gun This book intertwines Evie s story, past and present, as Detective DD Warren, the lead detective on the scene, recognizes Evie from a case she worked 16 years ago the death of Evie s father And Evie has a secret she has been keeping for half her life related to that This book also centers on Flora, DD s Confidential Informant, who we have met in previous books, as well Flora is trying to get over a trauma of her own, and is working hard on framing herself as a survivor I thought the growth we saw in Flora throughout this book was brilliant I think Lisa Gardner really does her research is is able to get into the mind of someone who survives a trauma or tragedy For Flora, it really is a two step forward, three steps back process I look forward to hopefully watching Flora s story evolve in future DD Warren books I truly couldn t put this book down there were twists and turns, things I predicted, and things I did not predict There were a couple pieces that I think actually wrapped up a little too nicely but I think that is typical of most books. For fans of Lisa Gardner this is.a MUST READ I give it 4.5 5 stars I was provided a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review flag
