any one lesson from this novel, it s that true friends really do have your back they don t give up on you no matter what What I loved most the depictions of shared memories, shared language, and the easy way girls of a certain age have with each other the feet in your lap confidences, the way they can know things about each other without being told Remembering how they watched Beaches together at age 12 huddled up under blankets , Zan says, We were still getting to know each other then, but it felt like something miraculous was happening It was easy, and natural, like we already knew how to be friends Which makes Priya s total disappearance all the baffling. This book is about love in many forms, love that endures and love that doesn t New love Zan s mom is head over heels for her new girlfriend, Zan is getting to know the hunky and loyal Logan , family love Zan and Logan both have much younger siblings , parental love missing parents, missing in action parents, hovering parents Love that gets renewed after a long hiatus Love that endures even after death. And throughout this tightly woven mystery, the thread of hilarity that had me laughing out loud on nearly every page Loutzenhiser was trained at Second City in Chicago and it shows her dialogue snaps, her comic timing is impeccable, and the repartee between Logan and Zan has the feel of great improv I loved this Logan s introduction to the story breathed life into the book and Zan s life The beginning of the book she was definitely wallowing a bit with her depression and trying to process the loss of her best friend, especially without any word People never tell you What Her eyes grow glossy, but she smiles How much it hurts to lose a friend Honestly this mystery is plotted so incredibly well and despite my being a very close reader I found myself constantly gasping when tidbits were revealed As Zan and Logan go deeper and deeper, things get weirder I like that even though everyone thinks she is just seeing a person trapped under a boulder as a way to try and make sense of being left behind, no one makes her feel stupid, and Logan even goes along with it Their friends to romance arc is so precious and me, a girl that rarely swoons, have a couple of KISS HIM notes on my Kindle.I did find the narrative style a little difficult to follow until I settled into the story the story kind of bounces around between past and present and doesn t show every single detail of Zan s day These jumps are notated in the eARC with just a double spaced paragraph break, but I quickly overcame the jarring feelings The main reason that this was a 4 star read was because I don t understand how we suddenly have journals that provide exposition in the last third of the book Don t get me wrong, I liked the addition exposition and watching the pieces kind of slide into place, but I found it a little out of place and I am not sure where the reader gets them from because the rest of the story is told in the first person perspective of Zan This is such an important story about friendships fading and how social media can make that harder, but it is also about love and never giving up on people I went from being on pins and needles I honestly stayed up until 1 a.m to finish this book yawn to laughing out loud Loutzenhiser does a great job of cutting the tension with the character s dialog and sarcastic humor Also I just need to say that Logan s little sister Bee is an icon That s a good name, is she a princess No, she says, somewhat scandalized She s a senator The book is strong and feminist I loved how Zan was a strong female character that isn t made up of rough edges and it handles how one processes loss and how one might process being ghosted by the one person you are sure would never I honestly cannot recommend this book enough If I were going to straight up classify this I would say it is contemporary than a mystery as it is as much about growing up, trying to figure out your place in the world, processing loss, and handling first likes as it is about uncovering a mystery REPRESENTATION lgbtqiap f f relationship, sexuality being explained as being on a spectrum , was a deeply personal read There s a lot about this book that I probably liked because of that experience, and there s also a lot that I like less for that same reason. If you ve never had someone ghost you who you thought cared, you might spend this book yelling at Zan to get over it already Pretty much everyone in her life is telling her to move on That s what I heard too, but it s difficult to move on without closure I ve had quite a few friends dump me in my life, and it sucks huge balls, but being ghosted was so much worse, because you don t know why it s happened Deep down, it hits you in this place where you wonder why you re so easy to leave, even for someone who claimed to love you and had always had your back Plus, because nothing went wrong that you re aware of, it s hard to really write the person off as an asshole and take that closure. So yeah, I identified hardcore with Zan in this situation, who is being told to accept that Priya doesn t want to be in her life any but is instead checking her Instagram trying to understand, hoping that one day Priya will reach out and love her again It s pretty heartbreaking, though I do wonder if anyone who hasn t experienced this will understand why she s been upset for so long TBH, it s the year anniversary of my friend ghosting me and I m only just beginning to find my closure, and it still fucking hurts, so I ll just say that Zan s behavior is totally believable and realistic The things she says and thinks about it are so on point for how I ve felt over the last year And I get Zan s trust issues, because she had only this one super close friend who has disappeared without a word.Outside of the ghosting aspect of the book, I was engaged, but I didn t connect as strongly with the rest of it The romance with Logan was okay, but I feel like there needed to be with him to really make it work They become close randomly, and I don t really understand why she initially let him, nor why he was so determined to be her friend initially His arc feels half assed merely because Zan s so focused on her own shit I do love Zan s psychiatrist mother and her girlfriend wish there d been of them , and her relationship with her dad has a nice arc, though again very minor Zan s brother Harr comes up a lot but I could not tell you one thing about this kid other than that he doesn t like bad words.Personally, I didn t care for the mystery plot line or the way it resolved Zan begins investigating Priya, feeling like something bad has happened to her to cause her to have changed so much The rest goes in the spoiler tags, but I will say part of why I m unhappy with this part is because of what I ve been through view spoiler In the end, it turns out that Priya has been abducted by her step father who stole money from the charity Priya s mom founded before her death Honestly, I wanted the resolution to be that nothing like that actually happened, that Priya just moved on or couldn t cope with something so she cut Zan out It sucks obviously, but that s absolutely what happened to me, and there s no creepy guy holding that person hostage to keep them from reaching out And, while that may not make as exciting of a book, I hate to think of teens this happens to who find it that much harder to find closure because MAYBE this is the case where their friend really couldn t make contact Also, Zan did a lot of really creepy stuff in her investigation breaking in to Priya s old house, tracking down Priya s ex boyfriend Zan s never met, calling various people and lying to get information about Priya, and hanging evidence on her wall like something out of a serial killer film , and that s all fine and justified because Priya was actually in danger But in most cases, that will not be true, and when you re ghosted you really should not obsessively stalk the person who ghosted you hide spoiler My feelings are super duper mixed on this one, and it s all so personal to my own life that I suspect this book could be 100% different for other readers I will say that I would absolutely read another book by Loutzenhiser flag Like see review Jan 04, 2019 Amy rated it really liked it review of another times But, it s ultimately up to you.Zan and Priya are best friends The type of friend who could live at your house and no one would think anything was weird The friend you call first thing in the morning, and last thing at night The one you do everything with The one that most people confuse for your sister And then Priya moves At first, Zan tries to keep in touch, sending emails, texts, and calling But there is nothing Priya has cut her off and ghosted Everyone in Zan s life is telling her to move on it s her senior year, she has to get over it She tried to keep in touch over the summer, but now she has to face the facts Priya is gone and doesn t seem worried about staying friends But Zan can t let it go She starts to wonder if something happened to Priya and what she would have to do something was wrong but who no one would take seriously It was interesting trying to figure out the truth of what happened to Priya, although I had an inkling from the beginning that turned out to be semi true It was just a solid contemporary palate cleanser for me and I truthfully really enjoyed it The only negative I will mention is that what happened to Priya seemed a bit glossed over and not taken as seriously as it should have been Despite the subject matter the book was pretty upbeat and so I felt that wasn t quite up to par for the conclusion of the book Hence, 4 stars instead of 5 I would still definitely recommend reading this book especially if you like contemporary novels flag Like see review Nov 16, 2018 Basia rated it it was amazing review of another edition Wow I love books
