HEIDI PERKS is a compelling, chilling, suspenseful, and a compulsive read that was an easy book to escape into that didn t have too much darkness to it The intensity level of this book gradually builds as the story progresses and there is also this subtle undertone of unease that makes you question what you are reading.HEIDI PERKS delivers a character driven, intriguing and well written read here with complex and realistic characters, a uniquely written premise and an enthralling storyline The story is told from dual perspectives between Charlotte and Harriet in an alternating timeline of Now and Before the disappearance of Alice with excerpts from Harriet s diary I thoroughly enjoyed the format of this story and both perspectives and timelines equally I m a total sucker when an author chooses to add in different writing devices to spice up the story so the diary excerpts definitely added a little extra excitement to the story for me Norma s Stats Cover Worrisome, suspenseful and a of young mother, Harriet, and her husband Brian She has never been out of her mothers sight since the day she was born Harriet decides to let her best friend, Charlotte, take Alice to the school fair along with Charlotte s three children for a day of fun What should have been a day filled with laughter, bellies full of too much sugar and children falling asleep on the way home, turns into Harriet best friend s daughter Talk about guilt WOW I think I felt for Charlotte the most because she had to deal with the aftermath of being shunned by the entire town and the stigma associated with loosing someone else s daughter Of course nothing is what is appears to be in this story Harriet is devastated trying to find her daughter also is dealing with the blaming of her husband Brian The story was pretty slow to build for me and was pretty bored on and off throughout the entire story But, a twist happens about 50 percent in and I wasn t expecting that. But, the story STILL was dragging for me And the ending seemed to be rushed to me I m not sure where the author was going at the final end Honestly in the last chapter I was holding on to a final grasp of a twist and it just ended I wouldn t who was a really nasty, evil, creepy individual.Everytime this character was in a scene,I had goosebumps on my arms and chills ran up and down my spine. The descriptions of the actions and behaviour of accurately and realistically conveyed Heidi Perks excelled at writing and capturing the close knit bond that exists between parent and child, and how far a parent would go to protect their child, as well as testing the loyalty and bounds of friendship The first half was a slow burn, an exploration into Charlotte and Harriet s lives, using the Before and Now timeline format The last half was highly tense, littered with secrets, lies, betrayals, and unexpected surprises, that had me holding my breath There are topics of a sensitive nature, but I would still class it as on the lighter side when compared to some books in the domestic noir vein This is one that spills over into contemporary women s fiction, with minimal violence, but still has enough psychological suspense to satisfy die paced read managing to keep me on my toes throughout.Full of twists and turns this did a great job of retaining and investing my attention. The story itself revolves around friends Harriet and Charlotte and the fallout that results when the unimaginable happens.Charlotte at a school fete manages to lose Harriets daughter one minute shes there, the next vanished into thin air.How can their friendship survive this tragic strain and has the whole world looks on in horror Charlotte s perfect life starts to unravel as friends and strangers start to point the finger and judge.Crucifying her as a mother and friend.Meanwhile, Harriets fighting her own personal demons and with buried secrets ready to reveal all there s much going on here than originally meets the eye.So this was a great book that really kept my interest. Its told in dual POV Harriet and Charlottes and did an excellent job of portraying these flawed imperfect characters.I loved that both friends were far from faultless each not truly showing all of themselves but still acting so clueless as to how actual real they were both outwardly behaving.I also enjoyed seeing the glimpse into the mommy mates playground dynamics showcased here, actually so typical of most school hierarchy s, shallow and superficial all the way.It s no wonder Charlotte as an individual altered so much through this as she slowly has her eyes opened to her friend s fakeness. Not even one apology amongst them for shunning and abandoning their so called friend in her time of need. The only exception to this was her friend Audrey, she was a rock, I think we could all do with an Audrey in our lives.Harriet, as I mentioned earlier, has her own battles to fight and without going into to detail these slowly start to unfold as we venture further into proceedings. There is a lot of back and forth as we are taken back in time to the events as they occurred as both friends are questioned extensively by the authorities. And though this was somewhat predictable in places with no great surprises that I hadn t managed to guess for myself I still enjoyed myself here immensely. This was at its heart a psychological thriller but for me, it was also was a story about friendship and loss. This one gets a yay from me.Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Now You See Her of which I have reviewed voluntary. All out until the story allowed us to know what happened Harriet s husband is obviously a manipulative, sick person who calls her love but really harbors unhealthy feelings toward her Charlotte has lots of friends and plenty of money but enjoyed spending time with Harriet, who doesn t fit in with the rest of Charlotte s friends, because she feels like she can tell Harriet her thoughts and feelings without Harriet judging her or taking her ex husband s side of things Strangely, Harriet shares very little of real importance about her life, which allows the friendship between the women to be off balance, without Charlotte realizing it, until this fact is pointed out by law enforcement during questioning, after the disappearance of Alice The story is told in alternate times of Before and Now and from the point of view of Harriet and Charlotte This is a very enjoyable, psychological thriller, that kept surprises coming throughout the book, until the end It really says a lot about how being asked to look after your best friends child and then you lose them, what would be worse losing your own child or someone else s that s pretty much the premise for Now You See Her Friendships are tested, scrutinised And dissected, fingers of suspicion are pointed, making Now You See Her a suspense fuelled and very compelling read Unusual in a book with this theme the main focus isn t on the police investigation but centres around the two main characters Charlotte and her best friend Harriet, both flawed, with very different personalities The author explores their unlikely friendship and as she scratches away at the surface she deftly pulls the threads of their friendship apart I found my feelings towards both characters constantly shifting as details about them were revealed, I found myself distrustful of both characters at different points of the story, which certainly added to my enjoyment of this book There s one character who deserves a mention without giving too much away, they made my skin crawl and my hackles rise, definitely a testament to the author s writing skills that a character could get under my skin and stir up emotions I wasn t expecting Now You See Her alternates in chapters between Charlotte and Harriet and move back and forth between events before and after Alice s disappearance Sometimes I can struggle with this format, but not this time this form of story telling actually made this book a enjoyable read as I found myself constantly second guessing things I did have a niggling feeling I knew where the plot was heading and although I guessed correctly the author still managed to surprise me on one or occasions I wouldn t consider Now You See Her to be action packed, but like many psychological thrillers the emphasis is very much on the characters, you will find yourself doubting them, questioning their motives, and desperately turning the pages to get to the truth With familiar themes of deception, manipulation and secrets Now You See Her is a book I would definitely recommend to those who enjoy a psychological thriller with intriguing characters Personally I think this book is the perfect beach read, and I can
