into it Typically, once a book has been hyped to high heavens, it almost always feels like a bit of a disappointment, as it is terribly difficult for anything to hold up to such lofty expectations I was so nervous that I did not even pick up The Sandman until two months AFTER publication because I was so terrified of being the oddball For once, the hype didn t live up to the actual book it was SO much better than I had anticipated After such a winning experience with these characters and a smooth translation that reads like soft butter, I knew I had to read Stalker the moment I got my hands on it, which is exactly what I did Today a stalker is someone who suffers from obsessive fixations, or an unhealthy obsession with monitoring another individual s activities If you haven t read The Sandman yet, I would highly suggest doing so before picking this one up While the first three novels in the series aren t crucial to the following of this one, Sandman has a bit of a continuing storyline that is tied up in Stalker and would make it difficult to go back and read Sandman after the fact due to spoilers Following in the same vein as its predecessors, Stalker exudes a high stakes tension that drips with violence, erotic sexuality, and emotion These books are extremely graphic in many ways, and I would caution the sensitive reader to research a bit further before picking up this series If gripping thrillers that feature gore and experimental subject matter appeal to you, as they do to me, then you ll find this one worthy of your time Almost ten percent of the population will be subjected to some form of stalking in the course of their lifetime We see many beloved, reoccurring characters here, ones from early on in the series and some we are just getting acquainted to I think this is partially where Kepler s success comes from the ability to rotate around a beautifully flawed cast that keeps the series from growing stale or predictable There is so much detail and description to give these books the atmospheric decadence that readers adore in this genre, but each installment stays fast paced and compulsive from beginning to end I don t want to spoil anything with the actual case being solved, but I will state that I had not figured out who the killer was and found myself completely satisfied with how the case wrapped up Be ready for a gut wrenching cliffhanger my friends Highly recommended, and another winner for the authors Just as clouds rolling between areas of high and low pressure can turn into a tornado, a stalker s emotional swings between worship and hatred can suddenly become extremely violent Review copy furnished via the publisher. flag 131 likesLike see review View all 5 comments Nov 21, 2018 Tammy rated it liked it I ve shadow of himself, according to his friends as he appears sickly and emaciated.Magrot also becomes a key character as she is the detective involved in the case and allows Joona to help in the investigation, unofficially. The characters are written really well as they provide a great source of entertainment and intrigue as the story develops. In this book, they are of an asset to the story than anything else.I didn t particularly have a favourite but none of them seriously annoyed me either.Despite not having a favourite,it left me a little upset when a character died and I enjoyed the interactions between characters. The story was fantastic,it reels you in from the start and contains chilling scenes where you experience the victim in their last, normal moments before they realised they re being watched.I was constantly enthralled by the mystery of the killer and the twist concerning them is a jaw dropping one Stalker completely fits into the genre of thriller as it s a real crime drama, keeping you entertained from start to finish. My only real problem with this novel was the believability of some police procedures or their priorities especially with some of the stuff Joona gets away with.I definitely would recommend this to anyone interested in the crime or thriller genre, as this one is a perfect example of both.I m incredibly glad I won this from ,it s a great, another clip appears, the race is on to identify the woman before the murder, but again their hands are tied and Silverman s patience is coming to an end After the man who sought to kill Linna and his family turns up dead and his identity is confirmed, Linna s true whereabouts, in rural Sweden becomes known, where his is alive and living off the grid However, he is no longer part of the inner circle created by law enforcement, but has been coaxed back to offer some of his own insight on this baffling crime Meanwhile, Erik Maria Bark is working as a psychiatrist, seeking to pull memories from the victims family members, to determine if there might be a connection between this stalking crimes He holds a secret as well as a revelation he s helped to put away a man for murder who positioned his victim in a manner similar to those turning up now Bark did not alert the authorities to a key piece of evidence that came out under hypnosis, but is now harbouring a moral dilemma Could these recent killings be part of the larger narrative, or is a copycat on the loose Bark revisits his former patient to make amends and to see if he can help discover new clues to this larger mystery With clips making their way to the Division, the women begin to be recognised, friends and family of those on the case, leaving the race to find the killer at the highest priority Only the jagged memories of a former drug addict and the description of a Dirty Preacher fuels the investigation, and there is little time to lose That has never stopped Joona Linna from taking matters into his own hands, which he does without a second thought, no matter the consequences Kepler s hiatus can easily be forgiven after this masterful piece of work, which fans will devour.Kepler remains at the top of the Scandinavian crime fiction list the world over, and for good reason The stories are complex, with characters that pull the reader in and a plot that progresses nicely through the short chapters The mystery is never one of clear A to B, but meanders as it develops, offering backstories that will, eventually, become highly important to the larger narrative The patient and attentive reader will find themselves pulled in, even with Linna as a less than central character, and rushing to discover the killer and motive Such a masterful tale is not lost in translation, but far surpasses some of the crime fiction originally penned in English It is only disappointing that these readers must wait patiently for rights to be granted and translation accomplished before enjoying another novel, with a cliffhanger ending that begs for resolution.Kudos, Lars Kepler for this great novel You do not disappoint in the least, even with the delay in the novel s release.Like hate the lots of characters and plot elements that call back to earlier novels, and it s a lot to take in at once So I do suggest that you read all previous four books.Due the large size of the book, it lacks the pulse rating pace of many books I enjoy to read, but gains a good pace for the last 20% of the book.Different plots, lots of geography on Sweden do interrupt the pace and also following so many been sent to the public email address of the National Criminal Investigation Department The email contained no message, and the sender was impossible to trace and so this crime thriller set in Sweden gets off to it s creepy start as Margot Silverman leads the police chase to catch the stalker and serial killer.Stalker is the 5th novel in the Joona Linna series but I have NOT read ANY of the other 4 What I thought would be a regular police crime thriller was very different because although Margot was in charge of the police investigation, Joona Linna an ex cop and his friend Erik, a doctor poked their noses into the case This angle was odd because generally the reader follows just one lead character detective as they solve the case I did not feel as though it was one character s story and with the content spread across Erik, Joona and Margot, I was unable to fully engage with the plot I constantly thought, why are Erik and Joona poking their noses into police business rather than getting on with their lives It was very difficult to root for Erik and Joona What was good about this plot was just how difficult it was for the police to pick up clues The stalker serial killer was forensically aware and those YouTube clips just poked fun at the police but gave nothing away I liked how Lars Kepler made the stalker very creepy in the tale The tone of suspense and danger threat was spot on From time to time you would suspect characters of being the stalker as the story moved on But I did find the shifting focus between Erik, Joona and Margot a distraction This structure of story telling was a disappointment for me I liked how the character Jackie brought into the story how blind people cope in their daily lives The mysteries were explained and were a gentle way to raise public awareness The humour within this novel was gentle too, for example Our lives aren t boring, Thomas says calmly There s nothing boring about not using drugs, or alcohol or tobacco or coffee or tea Why not coffee Adam asks Because the body is a gift from God, he replies simply If it s a gift, then surely you can drink coffee if you want to Adam retorts Of course, it isn t set in stone, Thomas says lightly It s just guidance OK, Adam nods But if we listen to this guidance, the Lord promises that the angel of death will pass our home and not kill us Thomas smiles How quickly does the angel come if you mess up badly Margot asks This novel covers a lot of ground, a nice tour around sex and drugs but is rather far fetched in places, especially towards the end But the epilogue is very good, especially the explanation of stalking and obsessive fixation syndrome.I thought Stalker was a 4 star GOOD read, it got the creepiness of stalking spot on but lacked the character development and dynamics of police procedurals It was a good crime thriller but not in the top division The split between Erik, Joona and Margot simply did not work for me I think readers like to strongly follow a single character rather than a trio who do not work for the same firm But it was a GOOD read and will make me think twice about walking my dog whilst wearing my yellow rain coat with a camera in my pocket.Stalker was written in 2014 and is available as an Kindle eBook Lars Kepler is the pen name for the Swedish literary couple Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril. Thanks to NetGalley to devote myself to it.Joona Linna has disappeared, presumed dead Sara Bauer knows it isn t so, she is sure that he is with the family he spirited away years ago When she finally finds proof that Jurek Walter is dead, she goes to find him and shortly afterwards he returns to Stockholm Joona is a shadow of his own self to start with emaciated and with a limp He gets involved in the case of a new serial killer, one who stalks and brutally murders women He s not overtly a part of the investigation, but he can t keep away particularly not when he thinks the investigation is headed in the wrong direction. After four books I am quite heavily invested in the returning characters I find Joona Linna far adimarable know that I know him than in the first book It s ashame that Sara Bauer doesn t make of an appearance, but maybe next time Erik Maria Bark, the hypnotist, is one of the main characters He realizes with the murders that he put the murderer behind bars years ago or maybe an innocent man. This was a real nail biter from start to finish This was one of the most absorbing reads to far this year, I read it in little over 24 hours I ve been lukewarm toward this series for a long time, but with this book, I ve definitely become a fan flag 7 likesLike see review View 1 comment Aug 23, 2018 Rita rated it it was amazing review of another edition Shelves 2018, autores n story, but it didnt detravt from the crime at hand Joona takes a slight back seat, but does come into his own later in the novel Thrilling, fast paced and Warning very graphic murder scenes My only gripe is the length For a crime novel its very long Im not sure if the translation created the excessive length or not Well worth your time flag 6 likesLike see review Mar 05, 2018 Ana rated it it was
