page Wow That was my first thought upon finishing this book which I devoured I couldn t stop reading This was the absolute best way to start 2019 There s so much I want to talk about, where do I start Okay World building Damn This is everything I m ever looking for in sci fi I ve never been one of those readers that loved all the technical and or military overtones that some sci fi has I don t want to be drowned in techy words, detailed descriptions of said technological marvels, and pages upon pages of the minutiae of war I do like my world to be detailed, thorough, solid, and feel real And this one does I can picture myself walking around the ships, even digging into some of the details about how they run When we step on a planet, I feel the gravity, the sun blazing, the weight of the history of that particular place.World building is than just places, it s also the history of the people that built and inhabit those places Polaris Rising excels there as well A good eighty percent of this book takes place away from the center of that history, but it s still deftly woven into the fabric of this book We learn from Ada as she moves through the story, so that when we do encounter the core of these worlds, I was fully invested and clamoring for Jessie Mihalik delivered.Ada, oh Ada I love you I ve rarely felt such an instant connection and love for a character In fact, only one other comes to mind She s smart, honorable, strong, and kick ass Her morals and values are hers regardless of what is expected of her as a House member The dichotomy of her privilege and her chains is fascinating and something that I really enjoyed exploring Ada is everything I ever hope for from a heroine And than a match for Loch.I don t want to say too much about Loch, because his secrets are his to tell, but I don t think it s a spoiler to say that I always felt how trustworthy he was Never mind that our first glimpse of him is when he s chained to a wall Peeling back the layers on his history is fascinating If I thought him a little too alpha at times, well, it never crossed over the line to unacceptable He has a core of respect and never steps over Ada s boundaries, regardless of what he wants.Their romance feels slightly rushed, but I think that s me than the book I ve been primarily reading Urban Fantasy and Fantasy for the last year or so Relationships develop much slowly there Still, Ada and Loch progressed their relationship at a believable pace for all that was happening around them They were forced to find out if they could trust each other, and intense situations always bring out intense feelings I thought I would complain about the misunderstanding in the book when it came up And, honestly, I did roll my eyes when I saw it So often I want to shake the characters and demand they talk But you know what these guys did They TALKED AND each took responsibility for their part in the argument Love Love, love, love.Ada was also driven by much than just her feelings and hormones for a love interest She felt responsible for millions of people, and moved forward on things because she knew them to be right, sometimes in direct contradiction to Loch s desires and needs And there were times when he did the same I think one of the things I loved the most is seeing how these two came to terms with each other s independence and compromising on how to deal with the things the other couldn t or wouldn t change about themselves Their acceptance of each other and how they got there was amazing.I am absolutely dying for the next book, and many , in this series I ve already marked it on my calendar and am counting down the days.More available at The AlliteratesPre review.Wow That was kick ass, awesome, sexy, and fun I can t wait for Full review is on the run from her home because her father is forcing her into an unwanted marriage That s not the sort of life that Ada wants to continue on, so leads a life trying not to get captured Until the day that the bounty on her head gets so high that everyone is on the lookout for her I loved Ada s voice She was the perfect sort of heroine for this kind of story I imagine that you have to a certain amount of courage and ruthlessness to your personality to be on the run from your powerful father and your powerful fiancee As of the plot in Polaris Rising unfolded, we see the different facets of her personality, including her kindness and her genuine desire to help others When she is first captured, she is put in a cell next to Marcus Loch, the galaxy s most wanted criminal Together, they forge a way towards their escape Marcus had that cocky hero act down to a tee He was very piratey if that s even a word , mysterious and very very sure of himself Mihalik writes his character in a way that s appealing Yes, the guy has certainly got an arrogant side, but he was easy to warm up to as he exposed of his heart This brings me to the romance Holy chemistry I was not expecting the sort of steaminess presented in this book and I have to say, it wasn t an unpleasant surprise at all There were some strong hate annoyance vibes at the beginning that I was totally there for, but then these two actually began to see how much in common they had I was an absolute goner at this point It was the perfect balance of hot and tender Then, there were the plot and the world building, both of which were first rate There was danger, lots of kick butt action and plenty of twists and turns all throughout this novel I liked how the Mihalik made the world so accessible to readers too She doesn t bog you down with an overly complex world In fact, I found much of the politics and the world building to be very easy to digest Jessie Mihalik is clearly a talented author Even the secondary cast in this book was well developed Also, I LOVE that this is going to be a companion series with each book featuring different couple Readers will still need to read the series in order because there is an over arching plotline.Polaris Rising is an exciting to start to the Consortium Rebellion series I loved this first book and I will be eagerly waiting for from this author I definitely hope this book is on going to go into much detail It s basically Ada and Loch doing their best to simultaneously elude the members of Houses Rockhurst and Hasenberg, two of the three High Houses who rule the Consortium essentially, the government of the universe The Houses have always had a fractious relationship they re competitors in the spaceship market, so when Ada discovers something that could give the rival Rockhurst house an edge, it s her familial duty to learn about it This whole thing gave me serious Rockefeller Vanderbilt vibes Ada was a relatively good heroine Cool as a cucumber, smart, knew how to defend herself I didn t particularly like her but I didn t really dislike her, either She was okay Very close relationship with her siblings, which I always like to see in a book Loch, on the other hand, I just could not get behind AT ALL He felt like a clich of the tall, dark and handsome hero in fact, a lot of the time, I got the sense that he was an extremely sub par Jericho Barrons Somehow there was zero heat and tension in his relationship with Ada Just mechanical sex scenes and manufactured misunderstandings Also, we got barely anything on his past or personality AND IF THAT WASN T BAD ENOUGH, HE HAD A SHAVED HEAD I m sorry, but I cannot take a hero with a shaved head at all seriously The action scenes were nice and there was complex world building but the dialogue was ridiculously stilted, it got a bit jarring Contractions weren t used when they really should ve been Most of the other characters were obvious sequel bait they were all implausibly young and unnecessarily good looking The other important male characters were compared to Loch, just so you d know they were sexy and tough and ready to be heroes in the rest of the trilogy Good space opera, because I ve always felt like it s a man s world having grown up to names like Ray Brabury and George Orwell , whose books as good as they were, felt distant to me because I couldn t identify with and cheer for their characters So, picking up Polaris Rising I was both excited and wary, not really knowing what to expect or what I m even getting myself into.I shouldn t have worried Polaris Rising had me from the very first blaster fire It was fast paced, filled with all the daring action my heart desired and, as an added kick, it has real steamy, swoon worthy romance Needless to say, I loved it The story centers on Ada von Hasenberg, the fifth of six children of House von Hasenberg, one of the three most powerful families of the Royal Consortium Groomed from childhood to wade the intricate and precarious relationships between three High Houses, Ada knows that her destiny is to be married off to a rival house so she could spy on her husband and his family But it s not the life she wants for herself, fate or not, so she escapes before her engagement with Richard Rockhurst could be formally made For two years Ada eludes capture but, eventually, her luck runs out and she gets taken by a group of mercenaries eager to get their hands on the bounty her father put up for her supposed safe return This is where Polaris Rising officially starts.I had tons of fun reading this book The first page immediately hooked me with its fast paced action The plot was also easy to get with, and none of my fears about not understanding the whole tech that runs the world of the story were realized No info dumps here Instead, Mihalik breaks it down bit by bit, inserting technical stuff about the world she created into the story and her characters dialogues, which was effective and efficient. But what I really loved about this book was its characters.Ada and Loch both drive this story it moves when they do, follows the path they ve chosen to traverse It was a treat to trail after their adventures and misadventures I immediately liked Ada, while Loch grew on me as I continued reading The two of them are similar in a lot of ways they re both resourceful, smart and can kick some serious ass They don t trust as easily as other people would, which kind of work against them at the beginning since they needed to trust each other enough to form an alliance no matter how tenuous or temporary it was.Ada and Loch s romance was also another I unabashedly loved about Polaris Rising These two got me all heart eyes and swoony for most of the book The attraction between them were palpable right from the very beginning Their reluctance to pursue one another only added to the thrill of the chase And when they finally got together, it lighted up fireworks It was perfect the whole hook, line and sinker deal I also loved how Mihalik drew her secondary characters They are all colorful on their own account there is Rhys, the successful black market dealer who shares Loch s past, and Veronica, the fence with a secret of her own that could get her in trouble with one of the high houses then there s Bianca, Ada s older sister who s kind of a master in gathering information and Ian Bishop, House von Hasenberg s director of security who may or may not this is just a hunch know Loch than he lets on All these help Ada and Loch providing them with something only they could give and helping the two main character reach their end goal. While some parts of the story were outlandish, I didn t much mind because I was having loads of fun reading the book It was so easy to turn off the skeptical part of my brain Overall, Polaris Rising was an excellent, entertaining space opera I m sure many readers will enjoying this book I know I did I m already so excited for the series next 3.5 stars He looked like the kind of man who would shoot first and ask questions never

So this was a bit of a mixed bag for me There are plenty of things to like in this book but there are some things that I just wasn t feeling at all Despite my mixed feelings, I m excited for the second book and see what else can this author do.

The book starts off with Ada getting captured by mercenaries after being on a run for several years to avoid a political marriage to her family s rival arranged by her father She was locked in cell with Marcus Loch, the galaxy s most notorious criminal Ada had no plans of returning to her father and she knows just who to talk into helping her escape. There are a lot of aspects that I really like in this book, Ada Von Hasenberg being number one on that list She might be a pawn in her father s political plans but damn if she ll roll over for him I really liked Ada I m glad the author gave her agency despite not having any power She s sensible too There were instances in the book where she could have acted out or lash out when things didn t go her way but she never did That s not to say she s perfect because she s not She s suspicious and doesn t trust anyone easily But I like how she allows herself to be emotionally vulnerable She s definitely the main highlight in the book for me.Another thing I really liked is the world building Yeah, there are some info dumpy parts but it doesn t feel awkward or unnecessary However, I m kind of disappointed because everyone in the galaxy are all human If you re expecting a talking raccoon or a humanoid tree, you won t get it here In this world, the human race stands alone Despite that, I did enjoy the secondary characters in this book I m intrigued by a few of them and want to know about them in future books.

But like I said, this was a mixed bag for me The romance was okay but it felt underdeveloped in parts Despite being on the the run together, they didn t spend that much time with each other They re always separated and when they do interact, it felt stilted and forced Their chemistry however, got better towards the end It s especially evident during some of the action sequences especially towards the end

I also have a bit of an issue with the pacing especially towards the end The ending felt abrupt I didn t worry much about it at first until I noticed that the next book follows a new couple instead of sticking with Ada and Loch as I had first thought As much as I wanted the next couple s story, I wasn t ready to leave Ada and Loch yet Their relationship felt so unfinished I hope we get of them in the next installment though

Despite these issues, I enjoyed Polaris Rising and would recommend it to anyone who s looking to try sci fi romance.

off reading Sci fi isn t my favorite subgenre of romance novels and I suppose I was just a little hesitant to throw myself into a book I might not love But then I read Kill the Queen by Jennifer Estep another book I stupidly put off reading and when I discovered how amazing that book was I knew that I had to pick up Polaris Rising, too.And damn, I was missing out.Polaris Rising is everything I love in a romance novel It s fast paced and sexy, features a strong heroine and a buff hero with a wicked grin, and it takes place in a well thought out, entrancing world It s a story that gets right to the action and never misses a beat, just one exciting, nail biting scene after another.Ada is a competent, skilled, and dangerous heroine She doesn t wait to be rescued, she does the rescuing But one of my favorite parts about her is that she actually knew her limits She wasn t one of those characters who charges headfirst into the action and damn the consequences I particularly enjoyed this quote from a scene in which she was practicing her fighting skills with our hero, Marcus Hand to hand fighting is a last resort for me, and I generally learned how to do it just long enough to make an opportunity to run I blocked a stomach blow then flowed away from a right cross that would ve clipped my shoulder Which means I fight dirty then run away She s the sort of heroine you wish you were She s not ashamed of her limitations, she works within them.As far as heroes go, Marcus Loch isn t all that unique he s handsome, buff, devilish, and sarcastic but you won t hear me complaining He s a hunk of muscle with the brains to match and will be the star of many a reader s fantasy I loved that he didn t treat Ada like a fragile creature, but trusted in her abilities as a fighter and a strategist A partner, rather than someone to protect every step of the way.Jessie Mihalik s writing talent and world building is on par with Sherrilyn Kenyon although her book was a little less confusing than some of the recent Kenyon books with all those names and places and relationships I cannot remember Overall, Polaris Rising is an amazing addition to the world of romance novels the sci not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The nitty gritty A delightful blend of romance, edge of your seat action, family secrets and plenty of high stakes danger, Polaris Rising is set to be one of my favorite series starters of 2019.Wow, I had so much fun reading this book I don t know what I was expecting, but Jessie Mihalik has written a thrilling and romantic story that hit all the right notes for me Now, if you re cringing at the word romance, please don t Yes, this is unabashedly a romance, but it s also a rip roaring adventure and action packed space opera If you want a comparison, it sort of reminded me of Star Wars and the relationship between Leia and Han Solo The romance does not take over the story at all, so don t let it stop you from reading this book. The story centers around Ada von Hasenberg, the youngest daughter of the von Hasenberg family, one of the three families of the Royal Consortium Ada has grown up with wealth and opportunity, but as the youngest daughter, it s her fate to be married off by her father to a man from a rival House But Ada has other plans for her life, and so after hearing rumors that her father has set up her engagement to Richard Rockhurst, Ada takes off, leaves Earth and for the next two years, spends her time dodging bounty hunters and trying to hide from her father. When the story opens, she s just been caught by mercenaries and finds herself on a ship bound for Earth After getting a few punches in, Ada is thrown into a cell with none other than Marcus Loch, a notorious murderer nicknamed The Devil of Fornax Zero who has an even bigger bounty on his head than Ada does Ada and Loch immediately distrust each other, but they realize that their only hope of getting off the ship before they reach Earth is to work together When Ada discovers that the Rockhurst family is hiding a huge secret weapon, one that could possibly start a war, Ada knows she must use her knowledge to help clear Loch s name and get her own freedom back.I ve given you just the broad strokes of the story, because I don t want to spoil it for you Polaris Rising was a thrill ride from start to finish with barely any down time for the characters, who are literally running themselves ragged trying to stay one step ahead of the men who are trying to capture them Mihalik s pacing was excellent, and at no time did I ever want to stop turning the pages Ada is a superbly written female protagonist She s strong, smart and resourceful, and she knows how to take care of herself But she s also human, and I loved that the author pushes her to the brink of survival time and time again Ada is strong, but she s no superhero She needs Loch s help than once during the story, but he needs her help too, which made them well balanced as a couple When we are first introduced to Loch, he s your typical gruff, sarcastic male character, and you just know there are going to be sparks between him and Ada But Mihalik delves below the surface and we soon see that Loch is misunderstood and has been wrongly blamed for a tragedy that happened years ago And yes, there is immediate sexual tension between Loch and Ada If you read a lot of romances then you will spot the typical formula used in 99% of them, but Mihalik does a great job of incorporating those elements into her story without sacrificing plot development There are two other side romances going on in Polaris Rising, in addition to the one between Ada and Loch, and one of them, I m happy to say, looks like it will be the main feature of the next book in the series But for those of you who are here for the action, you will not be disappointed Mihalik s world is a fascinating blend of space opera, politics, and rivalries between powerful families, populated with a large cast of well drawn and multi layered characters The author is not afraid to put her characters in danger, so get ready for some very tense moments, daring escapes and plenty of chase scenes This is a big story that takes place in space and on various planets, including Earth, and with a possible war brewing among the Houses, there are plenty of directions Mihalik can take her story in future installments. And I loved all the future tech in this world As a member of a House, Ada has nanobots injected in her bloodstream that act as healing agents whenever she s sick or injured She also has two chips inserted in her arms One is her permanent identity chip, something that everyone has, and the other is a secret and highly illegal chip that allows her to switch identities whenever she needs to So when she runs away from home, she can hide by changing her legal identity, thus making it harder for her father to find her Ada may be the youngest daughter, but she s been taught survival and fighting skills since childhood, so she s well prepared to escape from a prison cell and even steal an entire ship Oh, and she has some cool jewelry that deflects bullets, sort of like Wonder Woman s magic cuffs And just in case you re thinking that Ada is nothing but a badass woman gunning her way through the galaxy, Mihalik gives her a softer side by showing the wonderful relationship she has with her siblings Ada may not like her father much, but she adores her sisters Bianca and Hannah, and when they finally get together I loved their interactions There are some poignant moments at the end of the story that put her future relationship with them in jeopardy, but heartbreaking moments aside, I cannot wait to read about these sisters. If some of the action is a bit over the top and unbelievable, I found myself able to overlook some of Ada s outlandish abilities, simply because I loved this story Overall this was a wonderful start to the series, and I m happy to see that book two, Aurora Blazing, is slated to be released this October.Big thanks to the publisher for supplying a review copy. This review originally appeared on Books, Bones Buffy ve read in a long time It is a deliciously fun blend of sci fi space opera and romance new favorite genre alert that I enjoyed so much I read it twice in a row without stopping At 448 pages, this is not a short book I flew through almost 900 pages in a single weekend and found the second read even entertaining than the first There is something inherently romantic to me about the possibilities for space exploration in the very distant future to have the ability to effortlessly travel through space and time and wake up in a ship and look out the window to see vast, empty space, or some distant planet For my imagination, the possibilities here are endless. With Ada, Mihalik has created a character that made every part of my imagination sing As the daughter of one of the most powerful families in the universe, Ada has rare access and means to go anywhere she wants to go She s been trained in espionage and fighting skills and her time growing up in a world rife with the dangerous politics of the other high houses means she has a confident self assuredness not typically found in someone so young She s disciplined, resourceful, intelligent, witty, incredibly brave, and she can pilot a ship I want to be her.The book opens with Ada s unsuccessful escape from capture by a group of mercenaries to be known here on out as mercs because using her lingo makes endlessly happy who plan to cash in the very large bounty her father has placed on her head She has been promised since childhood to marry into one of the other high houses and it s a fate she does not plan to take lying down, or at all The mercs throw her into a cell with a very muscular, very handsome man who just happens to be the most wanted criminal in the verse see above note A quick note here to say plainly that I recognize the cliche here and throughout the rest of the book recognize it but do NOT care at all This is a romance remember And some amount of cliche is going to exist because we can only tell this story so many times in a completely unique way If being captured frightens Ada, she doesn t let it show Almost immediately, she takes in her surroundings and begins plotting her escape, and the handsome criminal she s locked up with, Marcus Loch, certainly makes things interesting.Full of believable futuristic world building that my nerdy brain devoured like candy, compelling characters, and non stop action, Mihalik packs so much into her debut Polaris Rising starts off at a run that turns into a full out sprint as Ada and Loch plan one escape after another and make a discovery that threatens the future of the high houses, and subsequently, mankind I particularly enjoyed the time spent planetside as well as the way the relationships are portrayed between Ada her friends and siblings.I ve always loved scifi, and while I enjoyed aspects of romance, they always lack something for me I think part of the reason why this book worked so much for me, is the fact that Mihalik gives equal focus to the action and adventure you expect from a space opera as she does to the budding relationship between Loch and Ada It reminded me a lot of The Illuminae Files and the Shatter Me series, but geared towards adults and has the steam factor I loved so much from A Court of Thorns and roses series. If you are a fan of scifi but also enjoy some good smut, you should read this as soon as possible I cannot overstate how entertaining this book is and how utterly and completely addicting I neglected all responsibility this weekend to read it not once, but twice and I have no doubt I ll read it again The best part is that book two in the series, Aurora Blazing, will be out this fall I ll be scouring Edelweiss from now until then so I can get my hands on this next installment as soon as possible As always, the world s biggest thank you to Edelweiss and Harper Voyager for the review copy of this truly wonderful book flag Like see review Jan 30, 2019 Katrina rated it it was amazing so much because I thought my boyfriend might start to think I was going insane I also need to stop and mention the world building That in itself is fantastic It was so in depth and detailed Bravo Ada is the best kind of female character flawed, sarcastic, smart, and oh so wonderful I kept checking to see how far along I was in the book because I did not want the book to end I did not want to leave Ada She is undoubtedly herself and does not bend to meet anyone else s standards for herself She knows who and what she is and she takes pride in that I could probably just gush about her non stop She is the type of female I love to see in books And Marcus He falls right into that strong, silent type He is not one to mince words or ask stupid questions He gets to the point He is just as smart, strong, and courages as Ada and he makes sure she knows it He doesn t try to stifle her, instead he pushes her to be herself and non one else He wasn t afraid to use her skill set and he trusted her to make the best decisions in a given situation They worked together and were equals Again, we need men like him in books And together They sure steamed up my glasses In all, this is a book you need
