An atmospheric historical fantasy set during the reign of King Louis XIV with an alternate twist of events I have been anticipating this book ever since I first laid my eyes upon the summary I nearly died when I was approved for an ARC An Affair of Poisons is based on L affaire des poisons, the major murder scandal in France during the reign of King Louis XIV that resulted in 36 conspirators executed Addie Thorley envisioned an intriguing alternate history to this event which involved La Voisin and the people of Paris La Voisin was a French fortune teller, commissioned poisoner, and professional provider of alleged sorcery and became the central figure in this wicked affair Now, that is an impressive resume Some claim she s a witch Others a Saint I see no difference the people of Paris worship her either way From the very first pages, the lush descriptions and rich details depicted a dark and atmospheric tone I often forgot that I was reading young adult because there were many moments where it didn t feel that way This tense and fast paced tale is rooted in 17th century Paris on the brink of political revolution and depicted what happens when alchemist, Mirabelle and bastard princeling, Josse have to work together to stop the murder of both nobility and the common people after Mirabelle accidentally murders King Louis XIV for her mother s La Voisin Shadow Society Descriptions of alchemical magic and deadly smoke beasts gave the plot a wicked advantage.Thorley was able to keep the intensity of plot without sacrificing the character s individual, unique voice Told to us through alternating perspectives, you find yourself quickly falling in love with Mira s fierceness and courage and Josse s loyalty and commitment Together, Mira and Josse supported each other as they battled against their unique struggles of self worth, acceptance, guilt, pain, trust, and loyalty.Every character represented the hopes and struggles during this period however, the story was afflicted by flat characterization We see one side and a few traits, but most of the characters were generally the same from beginning to end There is a romance, and it is slow and gives you a feeling of sweet hope without overshadowing the plot If there is one trope that I live for it s the enemy to lover slow burning romance I d believe her capable of anything when she s grinning like that Her smile is dazzling It could set the world ablaze Overall, this is a memorable fantasy debut by Addie Thorley which tells a creative and alternate history of real life events Be sure to read Thorley s author note at the end in which she shares the real events, and where exactly her inspiration came from She also provides additional recommended reading if readers wished to learn of the This novel follows the journey of Mirabelle, the daughter of a woman who isn t afraid to commit murder if it benefits her, and Josse, the bastard son of a kind who feels unwanted and bitter When Mirabelle s mother murders the king and tries to rise above to become someone powerful, Mirabelle and Josse find their lives entwined with the goal of ending Mirabelle s vicious mother to restore order to their country.Addie Thorley created characters with depth and plenty of room for character growth Neither Mirabelle or Josse were flawless human beings Josse was quick to anger, and Mirabelle made mistake after mistake By the end of An Affair of Poisons, these characters were far from perfect obviously , but they d grown a tremendous amount. Many historical novels are bogged down with vast amounts of useless paragraphs about nonessential ordeals, but An Affair of Poisons cuts right to the chase from chapter one Addie Thorley never added too much or too little information, and I found myself flipping through the pages of An Affair of Poisons in a record of time. While the author didn t include info dumps in An Affair of Poisons, there were scenes I found to be useless There were moments where I found myself skimming a page or two to get to a intriguing scene that would add to the story.Even though there were a few scenes I believed to be pointless, An Affair of Poisons is a The beginning is a lot of set up and a bit of an information dump, but once everything gets settled and the main plotlines kick in, I really started to enjoy it.While historical fiction and I don t always get along, I really did enjoy this one It leans heavily on the fantasy elements The use of alchemy and a little bit of magic were really awesome and I liked how they tied in to the story I also wasn t aware of the historical events this book is based on, which probably helped me enjoy it.The romance was also a highlight for me I was starting to think I wasn t as big as a fan of the enemies to lovers trope as I thought, but I just like it when it s done well And this is done well The tension between the two characters and their snipes at each other were fantastic I would honestly read a book about their everyday lives together.I personally feel like at parts, the emotional aspect could have been heightened There were parts that I could see were supposed to be heartbreaking but I didn t really feel it Part of it could be there was big tragedy after big tragedy and they weren t treated like a big tragedy for long enough I found myself being surprised at stuff that happened, because I didn t feel like it was necessary Plus, I feel some of them were brushed over While I know things have to move on, I don t think the amount of grief some characters felt correlated with what happened.I fell in love with Mirabelle and Josse I loved both of their characters so much They both have POVs and while they are both fighting for the same thing, they both have different journeys to go on I really enjoyed how they had their own issues and their own sense of self, while their stories also intertwined with each other I think it was masterfully done and I feel like the story was significantly strengthened by being inside both of their heads.I had a few issues with this book, but I did really, really like I enjoyed myself enough to ignore the issues I had flag Like see review pacing was perfect, not too slow at the slower moments, not too fast in those parts either There are some sword fights, magical smoke monsters because this book has some fantastical elements , nail biting alchemical scenes, and beautiful moments of character development I instantly fell in love with Thorley s two main characters, Mirabelle and Josse Mirabelle is kind hearted, yet determined, clear minded, and dang smart Her POV instantly hooked me, and I couldn t help but cheer for her throughout the book And Josse I didn t realize this was a dual POV when I picked it up, but he was so wonderful He is prideful, cunning, and kind, perfectly flawed in the best way His character arc was definitely my favorite This is a dual POV first person novel, but I didn t feel lost among the POVs
