horror thriller with strong police procedural elements It offers an interesting mystery crime fighting read with a group of women generally driving the plot. All of the important characters in the book are women who work as detectives in an ostensibly large city in Canada Early on, the reader is introduced to Matilda White, originally from Australia and Jacqueline Saint, a local Together, these two seemed as though they were made for a buddy cop movie, and given the plot of the book, it seemed a lot like 1987 s Dragnet The buddy cop element continues even right up through a violent, drug induced shooting rampage in which Matilda and Jacqueline trade snippy quips with each other. These two women are supervised by Leon Lewis, who at first seems like a well meaning benevolent sexist with his views that women are fragile, in need of protection, intuitive, and gentle, etc Later, he turns into a serious creep and monstrous individual Roughly halfway through the book, the reader is also introduced to Mary, Petra, and Josephine, all of whom are also police detectives These characters are not given much development, and their role is simply to act as substitutes for Matilda and Jacqueline in certain scenarios. In terms of plot, Time s Up did seem lacking at times For example, is never said where the story takes place, but it can be extrapolated that it takes place in Canada For example, torches are used instead of flashlights, Celsius is used instead of Fahrenheit, and one character has a tattoo of a maple leaf Besides the location issues, the plot opens up with a pair of ice fishermen recovering a dead woman from beneath several inches of thick ice She was Detective Melissa Greenwood, who went missing while working undercover for the city s Drug Squad The Drug Squad is investigating a new drug which has swept the city, Ice, which appears to have effects similar to cocaine plus methamphetamine and some people use it as a performance enhancing drug This investigation provides the general arc to the plot of the book as the detectives work to solve the case. From the start, it seemed as though Time s Up was going to be about strong, capable, feminist heroes, but that premise somewhat dissipated as some of the characters did not quite deliver This is not the only part of the book that somewhat failed to deliver The story s plot also left room for improvement and the foundations did not feel solid Simultaneously, the author does bring in many different elements for some shocking surprises.Time s Up is intended for mature audiences who are interested in thrillers with a horror theme The book contains graphic violence, drug and alcohol use, and plenty of creepy thematic elements This makes it a read with some weight to it, although the characters and plot do not entirely match up Overall, a decent book that most readers can enjoy for the surface investigatory, crime fighting, and surprising horror elements, as long as there is not too much analysis of the characters and the plot holes flag Like see review Aug 10, 2018 Alexander Pyles rated it really liked it review of another edition Craig Steele s debut in Time s Up She s grip through addiction, torture, and murder It is up to White and her all women team to confront the gang and reclaim their city The only question is, can they contend with what they stir up Steele s book is a rather brash blend of horror and thriller elements, wrapped up with a mystery twist that in some ways keeps the book quaint in small spots He does a decent job with keeping White and the other women away from the typical stereotypes, although I couldn t help but feel that White herself was a Mary Sue for lack of any other model His writing is thoroughly readable and kept the pages turning and with the thriller aspect, means the tension carried itself all the way through The book s real graphic violence and grotesque elements are the real point of contention and one reason why cautioning most readers seems to be the safest bet If a reader can deal with intense portions of writing and graphic sense of violence, then they will want to give this a read Dealing with women in danger can also be a triggering point for some readers and that may be another red flag This is all a testament to Steele s writing ability rather than a detriment Although, there are points that seemed to lean into these moments for shock value than narrative cohesion All in all, She s Breaking Ice may lull some readers into a false sense of security at the start, especially with a title like this, but don t be fooled This is one of the wildest, darkest, and craziest rides a reader can take, and we have Mr Steele to thank for that It will be interesting to see what book two reveals or if this crazed, bloody rabbit hole only goes deeper It carries a lot of different genres, so it has broad appeal, but with the harder elements it s advisable that only the most mature readers proceed with caution flag Like see review Aug 12, 2018 Hmmm rated it it was amazing review of another edition Huge thank you to the author Craig Steele for sending me a free copy of this book and the unique
