they lock her in a replica of Lizzie s room in the basement Mrs Porter, who is especially out of touch with reality, tells Emily that once she believes she is Lizzie, they will let her be free upstairs She also says that if Emily does not comply, she will go back and kill Emily s mother, who struggled a bit with alcoholism but has been doing well Mrs Porter says that since Emily ran away before, her mother will just start drinking again, AND has Emily s many siblings to make her happy, so Emily needs to stay put Obviously, Emily does not think this is a good idea and manages to eventually escape, but then has trouble readjusting to her own family.Strengths Kidnapping mysteries are always popular with my students for some weird reason Weaknesses So, the moral of the story is basically that parents who have lost a child are so mentally unbalanced that they will gladly kidnap and torture their best friend This is so insulting to parents have experienced a loss that I can t even describe my anger with this book Also, Rice is primarily an adult fiction writer, and it shows in the voice of the teenagers What I really think Won t be buying, obviously, but I m sure it will be popular in certain circles flag 2 likesLike see review View 2 comments Jan 26, 2019 Kate Waggoner rated it it was amazing Shelves 2019 read Thank you to the kidlitexchange network for the advance thrilling YA novel I was hooked from the first page and read it in a single sitting because I had to know how it ended One of my favorite things about the novel is that it doesn t just focus on the kidnapping itself, but also on the trauma it causes and how much a tragedy like this can do to a person and or family I really enjoyed this novel and I highly recommend it flag 1 likeLike see review
