I want to note that I m in the minority when it comes to Mary Calvi s Dear George, Dear Mary Most readers really loved the time they spent with this book and as such, I hope anyone reading this takes my feedback with a grain of salt.Calvi based this story on a little known chapter of George Washington s life and while I liked the material, I found the thesis difficult to swallow I don t mean to be rude, but suggesting the ignition switch of the American Revolution is rooted in George Washington s relationship with Mary Philipse requires the reader to ignore the social landscape of the colonies and a myriad of policies that favored the interests of the Crown over the interests of its subjects A war started by love might work for Homer, but I don t feel it appropriate when exploring the American Revolution.I found the political dialogue in this piece minimal which was hard as I am a reader who enjoys such things, but I also found it difficult to build relationships with Calvi s cast or envision the world they inhabited Calvi is good at describing the mechanics of her story, but her worldbuilding and character development didn t come through the way I needed them to Calvi s style was too dry for my tastes and I felt it took far too long for the plot to come full circle. At the end of the day, I found Calvi s story creative, but feel I was a poor fit for it and would have a hard time recommending it alongside novels like America s First Daughter or The Turncoat flag 19 likesLike see review View 2 comments Oct 22, 2018 Holly 2 Kids and Tired rated it it was ok I have long been historical accounts, letters and journals to create this fictionalized story, I have a difficult time believing that George s perceptions and hatred of the British all stemmed from a failed parallel with Mary reading The Journal of Major George Washington of his events at the French fortress. The beginning of the story is very engrossing, but once the ball happens, the progressive story becomes less and less progressive and and descriptive And that s not a style of writing I like But of course it might be to someone else s liking FB BestHistoricalFiction flag 1 likeLike see review of thought From the title and the blurb I expected to actually read letters from to George Washington and from to Mary Philipse therefore I experienced some disappointment that it was not so To be if that is because as a woman of our time I want her to not give in and marry Morris you don t need a man just because he is a man, wait for George or what It is a different time, there was tremendous pressure on her to marry Morris, for goodness sake, her family, not to mention the British army conspired against her and Colonel Washington just so that twit can woo and then marry her She didn t stand a chance, neither did Washington It was frustrating, who knows what would have been Of course I realize much of this is gleaned from the letters, etc I don t know how much was actually detailed in the papers that Calvi had at her disposal I do know she did what appears to be quite a bit of research I will say there were some rotten people in poor Mary s life along with some good people as well Can t believe Dr James Jay didn t get run out of town or worse, I guess family connections will save anybody even from their own family All in all I did enjoy reading this book, I got over the initial disappointment over it not being a collection of letters That is due entirely to Calvi s easy writing style While referring to real people and events, it reads like a fiction It could easily be made into a pleasant and enjoyable film I had previously enjoyed historical fiction but somewhere along the way, it became too romancey and not enough historical The genre became just another way to deliver the rather too intimate details of a relationship, perhaps mask it in a less scandalous way Dear George, Dear Mary is a story of a romance, make no mistake, but it isn t about serving us the juicy bits or about detailing the physical aspects of the relationship It is a telling of a real relationship shared by these two people who happened to have places in our history It is ultimately an unhappy relationship because it was unfulfilled, they never got to see their hopes and dreams succeed due to forces beyond their control It is sad It is nice to see believe that although the years passed, the great hurt and disappointment that Washington must have felt did not color his treatment of Mary during the war George Washington was ever the gentleman through and through It is easy to see why the women all swooned over him I did enjoy seeing some of the 110 rules for a gentleman by which Washington comported himself would have really liked it if these rules were listed somewhere in their entirety especially as I have a feeling they would still apply and be useful in today s world If you like the old fashioned historical fiction, give this book a try It is a quick read and a pleasant way to spend your free time flag Like see review Jan 11, 2019 Kelly rated it it was ok Shelves arc to review, historical fiction 2.5 5 stars I received an advanced copy of this book from the all things historical fiction, and especially historical fiction that sticks close to the facts of real events, I was excited for this one However, it didn t quite live up to my expectations.I often complain when historical fiction books aren t historically accurate or have too much made up stuff in them this book suffered from the opposite problem This book seemed very confused about whether it wanted to be fiction or non fiction, which took away a lot of the enjoyment for me When I go into a fiction book, I want story and feelings and relatable or at least sympathetic characters When I go into a non fiction book, I expect to learn and absorb a lot of information With this book, which couldn t make up its mind, you lost some of the feeling emotion of good fiction but also lost the facts of the non fiction among the story. Those were my main two issues with this book I didn t feel very connected to Mary OR George, despite the fact that this was a love story and should have had some romance swooning involved, and I also got REALLY bored and zoned out everything there was a long passage quoted from a historical document A snippet of a letter from Mary to George or vice versa would have been a nice touch every once in a while in this book, but I didn t need long passages quoted from all of George s letters to other military officials, especially when they had nothing to do with the main plot of the story They bogged down the story and made it harder to read, which is quite a shame I had never heard of Mary Philipse before, but it sounds like she had a really interesting life and her relationship with George actually seemed profound than the one she had with her husband or that George had with Martha I wish I had enjoyed learning about her.Overall, I just wish Calvi would have been decisive in writing either a historical FICTION book that focused on the romance and relationship of George and Mary or just said she was doing a non fiction book on this and focused on the academic historical source side of the book I feel if she d focused on the feelings of Mary and George s relationship , I would have felt connection to the characters and enjoyed this book much immensely, just as I would have enjoyed it if she made it entirely non fiction and I went into this with the intent to read a non fiction book and learn about the pair in an academic sense.I give this book a 2.5 5 stars It gets props for the interesting subject matter and for the few chapters where we actually saw Mary and George interacting, because I greatly enjoyed those, but the rest of the book falls flat for a lack of character development and dry passages that quote directly from historical sources I wanted story or non fiction, but this mix of both didn t work for me, unfortunately cursed, she cowers away from suitors until she meets an honorable Goliath of a man named George whose powerful presence commands both protection and honor Despite her inner struggles, Mary slowly falls for this giant of a man as she gets to know him and his character.George has recently been shunned by a beautiful woman, and isn t in any hurry to repeat THAT relationship Yet when he meets Mary, a beautifully gracious yet sullen young lady his resolve melts They become acquainted As the relationship grows, George is decidedly not suitable for Mary according to her brother Frederick who is left in control of Mary s future The love relationship becomes complicated as a British soldier looking to further his position and wealth goes after Mary to win her over The diabolic plot thickens as we see what possibly drove George Washington to become an enemy to the British crown as he loses his love to another Mary becomes the wife of Captain Morris, a man she doesn t love when the letters George writes her are hidden away by her controlling brother Frederick Mary believing George has left and will not return makes a tragic mistake.Suitably studied out, and written from research by Mary Calvi, a nine time New York Emmy award winning journalist this is a wonderful historical work I was deeply entrenched in the story, following it from eighteen century high society snobbery with all it s balls, teas and gossip to the bloody battlefields of war Following the plot, the reader delves into a heinous governmental British plot using deceitful tactics to undermine true love After reading this, I can see why George felt the way he did and why he became our first president A very informative book and a story which needed to be told. The book is released on December 3, 2018 Pick it up You
