taking over Caldera Mez and her new friends and fellow shadowwalkers a tree frog named Rumi, a bat named Lima, and a monkey named Gorgi set out on their adventure to save Caldera This was my first time reading a book by author, Eliot Schrefer You can tell that Schrefer did in depth research on South and Central American Many children s stories with animals sugar coat the reality of animal instincts and behaviours Schrefer does a excellent job at describing the unique abilities of each animal My favourite character was the bat Lima Schaefer describes her using her echolocation to manoeuvre the forest and to assist her daywalker friend s at night Schaefer puts a lot of emphasis on the predator and prey relationship in the wild He is realistic about animals eating other animals to survive, especially since his main character is carnivorous panther I had a little trouble following the storyline at times The narrative is fast moving and a bit choppy I think a prologue with the history of Caldera would of been beneficial to the reader For example, the characters keep talking about traveling to the Ziggurat, without really explaining what it is, until page 125 it is a temple, I had to google it Overall I enjoyed the world Schrefer created Mez s Magic touches on many themes that children s and adults deal with everyday, like discrimination, friendship, confidence, and trust Mez knows it is a brief time until his aunt and his unlikeable white cousin cast him out When Auriel, a seductive boa constrictor, comes to call and praises Mez s potential to win a battle for survival against the mythical Ant Queen, the young panther warily embarks on a life changing journey into friendship, self knowledge and danger beyond his comprehension It is impossible to read this book without drawing comparisons to The Lion King, but this book has a different genesis and the good characters are both charming and evolved beyond a Disney story Evil Auriel is the embodiment of the old axiom, You knew I was a snake when you picked me up Auriel is evil down to his reticulated bones, and the aura of the predatory Ant Queen, is mythically terrifying In fact, it may merit a warning to younger or sensitive readers that all does not end well for many of the army of eclipse born animals There is no overt ecological theme, but the fact of the Rain Forest setting will encourage young readers to look further into life in this biome More importantly are the lessons of the value of friendship, learning to recognize your talents, and finding strength in numbers even with unlikely confederates A much anticipated sequel is coming There s also potential for animation in a story that is destined to be a classicBLIO 2018, Katherine Tegan Books Harper Collins had the invisibility, and Rumi the frog has wind powers, and Gorgi the monkey had fire powers and the bat Lima that has healing powers One of the favorite parts of the book was when Mez attacked the Ant Queen who was trying to take over Caldera with Auriel the trader constrictor that was working with the ant queen but then got killed in the ziggurat when it collapsed Overall I I thought this book was little bit that good because I liked the way the animals had powers like Mez the panther had the invisibility, and Rumi the frog has wind powers, and Gorgi the monkey had fire powers and the bat Lima that has healing powers One of the favorite parts of the book was when Mez attacked the Ant Queen who was trying to take over Caldera with Auriel the trader constrictor that was working with the I write books and then, by an astounding stroke of good fortune, someone publishes them My first two books, Glamorous Disasters and The New Kid, were for adults, and then I had a momentous lunch with author editor David Levithan when I became a young adult author Since then, you can blame me for a number of titles, including The School for Dangerous Girls, The Deadly Sister, and Endangered Two I write books and then, by an astounding stroke of good fortune, someone publishes them My first two books, Glamorous Disasters and The New Kid, were for adults, and then I had a momentous lunch with author editor David Levithan when I became a young adult author Since then, you can blame me for a number of titles, including The School for Dangerous Girls, The Deadly Sister, and Endangered Two things have come only recently in my career a real confidence in plotting, and a realization that I write better stories when the characters are not me When my protagonists are tweaked versions of myself see the first two novels above , they re amorphous and unknowable people like I m too deep inside to know which details are important for a reader to hear about But my latest, about a girl keeping herself and an orphan bonobo alive in a country at war, is so far outside my own lived interior space that I found it much easier to write it convincingly Also I love marshmallows and early twentieth century fiction And apes

    1. E ARC from Edelweiss PlusThis would be a great choice if you have readers who are loving Erin Hunter s new Braveland series Exotic animals in an exotic location Schrefer always does a great job with this I may pass, since talking animals are definitely my bete noire Still, take a look at this one for elementary and middle school.

    3. This book was AMAZING I love books were the main character is an animal and I feel others who feel the same way would love this book as well Mez s Magic is definitely one of my favorites.

    4. I liked the message behind this and getting animal POVs but I found myself quite bored for long stretcheslike even when there was stuff going on, it couldn t hold my attention

    5. Not bad Not spectacular either Kind of boring at times Maybe it will get exciting as the series goes on.
