was not the end of our rising It was merely the beginning The Queen s Resistance is book two in Rebecca Ross s debut series, which I think is so underhyped and so underappreciated Seriously, friends, stop sleeping on this series Because this is exactly the kind of YA fantasy that I m always on the hunt for amazing friendships, swoon worthy romances, medieval setting, unique magic systems, and women coming into their power and embracing what has been taken from them by men who fear that power The Queen s Rising focused on our main character, Brienna, at a school that helps young girls hone sought after specializations And after graduating in one of these sought after trades art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge you will work under a patron doing a vast array of different things with your skill set But Brienna was sent to this boarding school so that she could go into hiding, because the blood that runs through her veins has made her quite the threat to the throne, and the world I honestly feel like I can t say too much about The Queen s Resistance, because it picks up very soon after the end events of The Queen s Rising, and a lot of things went down But I will say that Brienna is still very sought after, but now she has a very strong found family that helps protect her, regardless of what her last name is And even though the revolution is over, the rebuilding has just begun, and Brienna, and her family want to build something worthy of a legacy If you were a storm, I would lie down and rest in your rain If you were a river, I would drink from your currents If you were a poem, I would never cease to read you Cartier also gets his own point of view in this book, and his journey is also not an easy one because of his bloodline But regardless of the bad things that have happened in his past, he always shows empathy and consideration in every situation Seeing him and Brienna grow, and grow together, is so beautiful, and their strength and compassion really knows no bounds Found family is for sure the shining light of this beautiful tale, but this is also a book about becoming the person you want to be, regardless of the evil acts people have committed with the same last name as you And this is a story about rising up, and being what you dream of being, not who people expect you to be on account of a last name that you never asked to have Is it only blood that makes a House Or is it beliefs What holds people together The red in their veins or the fire in their hearts Overall, I can t wait to see what comes next in this world I just fell so in love with these characters, and I want to protect them at all costs Rebecca Ross s writing is so lyrical and beautiful, and I really have become so attached to this entire world she has created Again, took me by surprise with how amazing it was, how much I enjoyed it, and the beauty of the world Rebecca Ross created So, the sequel, The Queen s Resistance instantly became one of my most anticipated reads for 2019 And it did not disappoint The Queen s Resistant is stunning It is beautifully crafted, the threads of intrigue, alliances, betrayal and deception are carefully woven with strands of love, family, justice and a thrilling quest to right the wrongs of the past This is by far one of my all time favourite fantasy series, and I can not recommend it highly enough Just three days have past since Brienna and her newly formed family rode into battle to assert the rightful queen upon the throne of Maevana Now Brienna, her adopted father Lord MacQuinn, Cartier, and Isolde must determine who are their allies and who would seek to oppose Isolde as Queen Each must also deal with the challenges of returning to Maevana after so many years away and reestablishing themselves in their Houses, while also seeking the justice against the people who stole so much from them It is so very easy to fall in love with the cast of amazing characters in this series and it s captivating world part Renaissance France and part a mix of ancient Scotland and Ireland It was such a pleasure to plunge once again into Brienna s world and I loved that The Queen s Resistance picked up straight after The Queen s Rising left off I wasn t sure what to expect from the plot of The Queen s Resistance Brienna s story could easily have concluded at the end of the first book, and by her own word, the author indicated that she never meant to continue Brienna and Cartier s story But I am so glad she did There was so much to tell, and while the synopsis sounds a little vague and perhaps promising the events in the book will border on the mundane, the plot of The Queen s Resistance is full of intrigue, twists I did not see coming, sweet stolen moments of joy, kisses, great challenges and heartbreaking secrets laid bare, an epic quest for justice, fights, and celebrations It is the perfect sequel. Will there be a third book On Rebecca Ross s website FAQ she says that she has signed a three book deal with HarperTeen However, there is also an explanation for how the concept for The Queen s Resistance very greatly developed and changed What book three will look like, whether it will follow Brienna and Cartier or be a true companion novel as initially planned, perhaps with a matching world and different main characters, is still to be revealed In any case, I can t wait It is sure to be stunning, and, as shown by the development of The Queen s Resistance, reflect Rebecca s commitment to the heart of this series, her characters and her world through the beauty of her writing The Queen s Resistance is everything an excellent sequel should be and perfectly captures the heart and beauty of this epic and amazing YA fantasy series I highly, highly recommend it.The publishers think I can say too much about the plot of this book, since it picks up right after the events of The Queen s Rising, I have to say I was totally shocked by so many of the twists in this book When he looked at me, I saw the same in his eyes, this insatiable desire to have nothing but the night between us, the stars above us, burning secrets into dawn Whereas the first book focused on Brienna, and her journey from Magnalia House, a boarding school where young girls study one of the five passions knowledge, art, dramatics, wit or music , to the heart of a revolution attempting to overthrow the tyrannical King of Maevenna, this book switches between two perspectives Brienna and Cartier Evariste, master of knowledge While at first I found myself missing Brienna s perspective, having gotten used to her character and her voice, I began to appreciate Cartier s perspective as I was drawn deeper into the story You are made of ancient songs and stars and steel Ultimately, this is a story about becoming About finding who you are meant to be within yourself, and not letting anyone or anything else dictate who you should be It s about reaching your destiny and making it your own It s about dealing with trauma and letting it go, but it s also about getting and giving justice It deals with many adult themes, and it will force you to ponder the lines between good and evil, between justice and vengeance, between weakness and mercy.I really hope Rebecca Ross keeps writing with these characters, this world and this story I love them all so dearly, I can t bear the thought of to get both of their unique perspectives.I will say that there is a lot of violence in this book and somewhat graphic descriptions of torture, especially in the second half of the book view spoiler One character is hung by their hands and beaten stabbed disfigured and it gets pretty grusome hide spoiler I d say the last third quarter were the most violent, though I appreciated the way it was handled You could see that the violence was necessary, and not just for a reaction from readers We re introduced to MANY new characters in this book, and each has their own backstory and are very well rounded There were a few times I had to flip to the cast of characters to remind myself who was who because let s face it, when you ve got people with aliases and real names, it can get a bit confusing for the first few chapters , but their personalities shine through pretty quickly to make them distinct.Reading the description, I was pretty sure I knew where the book was going, and while I was correct about a lot of it, there were of course some surprises I was really pleased with how realistic an approach was taken in crafting the post war problems the characters were facing Struggles relating to alliances, old feuds, and power struggles from the bottom to the top were all masterfully handled, and made it feel real There s nothing frustrating than when the characters win the battle at the end, and just live happily ever after I am so happy that we got to see characters struggle to find their place in their new world, and question themselves. The Lannons were bloodthirsty and cruel and horrible in the first book, and I found their portrayal here interesting There were quite a few points where I could actually see their motivations from their point of view Having a villain who thinks themselves the hero can sometimes seem forced, but not here I questioned at least twice who was actually in the right, and that moral battle was so interesting to see play out At the end, I m still left wondering about the truth of their history and who s version of history is most accurate, and I love that, because that s real We don t always have all the answers, sometimes there are conflicting viewpoints and perspectives and that s just how it goes view spoiler I thought that the romance was going to be so much than it actually was It s always been a slow burn, always there element, but I expected it to pick up here It didn t, but I don t feel like it detracted from either character s arc at all In fact, it made me believe that they loved each other a lot , BECAUSE you could see their love for each other in their choices, rather than just in action hide spoiler Overall, I was incredibly impressed with this book s power and heart I m looking forward start the new era off by righting the wrongs of the past With lingering doubts and the bloodthirsty looking to keep things as they were, Brienna and Cartier must work together to rebuild their Houses, regain trust and see an end to the violence before its too late This book works similar to its predecessor by giving us a story of a carefully concocted dance of politics and treachery as everyone tries to deal with the fallout of the revolution With Houses in disarray and alliances needed to secure the kingdom those who were once in power are scrambling and desperate to keep their standings even if it means making deals with the devil and I thought that was a great way to continue this series giving us a bit of a hungry for blood and retribution French Revolution type feel We also follow Brienna as she works through trying to find her place as her blood belongs to one side of this fight but her loyalty to another and by straddling both she finds herself sympathizing with some of those accused and willing to risk it all to give them the same chance she received and though I really felt like we watched her come into her own last book it really shined in this and she just kept getting better We also get a second point of view with Cartier sharing the spotlight as he undergoes a bit of a transformation himself as he works to reclaim the life he thought he lost and seek justice for those who are not there to share in this future with him I really enjoy this series and though the ending suggests it may be the last any new addition to the world whatever it may be would be exciting
