    1. Detective Matt Ballard is haunted by a traumatic case he never solved. In the 1990's three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed, the killings stopped. But Matt was never satisfied that the real killer had been caught. Twenty five years later, another killing takes place on Gibbet Fen. Has the killer returned or is this a copycat killing? This is a new standalone book from the author, Joy Ellis. A suspense packed thriller that is ju [...]

    2. 4.5 StarsTwenty-Five years ago three young boys were murdered. The prime suspect was killed in a hit and run accident and the killings stopped. Detective Matt Ballard was never sure that the real murderer wasn't still out there. The case has haunted him since then.Today Ballard received a large brown envelope containing the picture of the very last victim the time of his death. More photos are received me were sent to his team. All are photos of the three boys murdered all those years ago.All t [...]

    3. Joy Ellis is, probably, my favourite author and I was very much looking forward to reading this stand-alone book.  This book comes shortly after Thieves on the Fens and I absolutely loved that book so much I really doubted it could be bettered but then along comes this one and now I am thinking WOW the books just get better and better I wonder what she will come up with next.Matt is haunted by a case many years ago when 3 11 year old boys were brutally murdered.  The suspect died before his gu [...]

    4. Oh my, Joy Ellis is a master of crime fiction. This book was a real mind bender.DCI Matthew Ballard (Mattie) is still haunted by a 26 year old case where three 11 year old boys were brutally murdered when he was a shiny new policeman. Cut to the present day and he starts getting very disturbing mail. Someone is sending him pictures of the three crime scenes - only the images are from before the murders. Logically they can only have been taken by the murderer. But the murderer is dead - isn't he? [...]

    5. I normally enjoy Joy Ellis' books but this one was just so so. For me, Detective Matt Ballard's constant reminiscing, re-criminations etc. was quite wearing and I began to tire of him as a character. Everyone else was well fleshed out but there were a lot of unanswered questions for me. Certainly not the 5 star I expected. Not even 4.5 star from me.

    6. This spine chilling, on-the-edge of your seat read surpassed all my expectations. Full of mystery and intrigue, so many red herrings and twists and turns make this Joy Ellis book a must for all crime thriller lovers.

    7. I have read quite a few books by this author and in my opinion it's one of her best. It is the kind of book where you say to yourself just one more chapter and end up reading half a dozen. There has to be some violence in crime thrillers but Joy Ellis knows how to put in lots of detail without going over the top.

    8. Eh, not the worst book I've ever read, but not a good one either. Cheap, dumb, mystery. The subtitle, "A gripping crime thriller with a huge twist" sets the book up for failure. That means that anyone could be the killer, so I suspected everyone. I figured it out a little more than half way through who it probably was, and as the book unraveled from there it became clearer and clearer whodunit. When the big reveal came I was not shocked in the least. The dialog was clunky, the modern police tech [...]

    9. I don’t even know what to say. I was hooked the whole way through. Usually, I always guess the twist by the half way point of a crime thriller, even ones that everyone else said shocked them. So, me being me, thought I had it sussed, just over half way through. I did change my mind a couple of times but I thought yep, I’ve nailed this. Let me tell you, I was wrong. I was so wrong. The answer to this story literally made me gasp. It was incredible. One of the best books I’ve read that left [...]

    11. 25 years ago, three 11-year-old boys were brutally killed. The main suspect was killed in a hit and run accident and the killings stopped. DCI Matt Ballard was just starting his career when he helped investigate these crimes. He and his team start getting photos from the previous deaths and an 11-year-old boy is found dead, murdered in a similar way to the 3 previous boys. As the investigation moves forward, it looks more and more like DCI Ballard is specifically being targeted, and it’s placi [...]

    12. Expecting a great British police procedural read, I was rather disenchanted with this one. Joy Ellis is an unknown to me, so I gave it a go. Unfortunately, for me, there was simply too much cruelty and evil behavior to even be able to enjoy it. How can authors take pleasure in creating such hideous characters, and have them act out on the page – and not just for a small fraction of the book, but for pages on end. I’m so tired of books with this mindset. Please, give me stories with authentic [...]

    13. If it was at all possible, I would rate this book five stars twice! Joy Ellis is a wonderful writer who keeps the reader on his/her toes all the way through and this book is at least twice that! I finished reading it as I was cooking tea and, when I reached the end, I said 'Oh my God' very slowly to an empty kitchen. Matt Ballard is a detective with a sad past and we learn more and more about his trials and tribulations as we read further through the book. He is surrounded by a team of detective [...]

    14. DCI Matt Ballard is taken to the brink when a past case comes back to haunt him, with new killings occurring twenty-five years later.A great read, a well-written mystery with some interesting characters, kept me interested right to the end.Received an Advanced Reader Copy

    15. 4 and 1 / 2 starsIt is the 1990’s and DC Matthew Ballard is on a stakeout for drug dealers in Gibbet Fen when the dealers suddenly flee. Hastening over the bridge to see what was going on, Matt and his partner, DS Bill Morris discover the body of a young boy in the water. It makes number three in the string of killings. It’s now the present day and Matt Ballard is a DCI. He is six months away from retirement and receives a photograph in the mail. It is of the last crime scene of the murdered [...]

    16. When I received this ARC from Joffe Books I was very eager to read it as I do love to read anything written by Joy Ellis. However, I was slightly disappointed with this one. Apart from an explosive introduction, I found it very slow to start and getting involved in it was hard work, which was a shame because the story line itself was original and intriguing. Sadly though the characters didn’t really excite me enough and the interaction between them was odd, they just didn’t seem to gel.The p [...]

    17. Twenty five years ago DC Matt Ballard found a body whilst staking out a drugs drop. Two more bodies were found shortly afterwards, all three were eleven year old boy whom no one would miss. The perpetrator was thought to have been found dead but several investigating the case didn’t believe it was quite that simple. Fast forward to now and Matt is now a DCI, just a few short months away from retirement. His past has been jaded and then he receives, via one of his colleague,s a photograph. He i [...]

    18. Beware the past by joy Ellis.Omg. An absolutely fantastic read with great characters. Dci matt ballard is on the hunt for a killer. But this killer has matt in his sight and he is playing a deadly game himself. Is he the killer from 25 years ago? I had my suspicion but it completely shocked me. Highly recommend this book. 5*.

    19. donnasbookblog.wordpress/This is an excellent book!  I have read a lot of books now by Joy and this has to be one of her best - and she has written some really good ones!!Matt is a great character and I loved how the story focussed on his professional life from the 25 year old case and moved in to his private life - really well thought out story, loved the pace and plot line, lots of twists and turns and it really kept me on tenterhooksFive stars from me and looking forward to her next book!!

    20. Twenty-five years ago, three young boys were brutally murdered in the Lincolnshire fens. The killer was never caught. It is the case which has haunted Detective Chief Inspector Matt Ballard for his entire career. Now, photographs connected to the case are being mailed to his work colleagues, raising Matt's suspicions that the killer may be back. When the body of another young boy is found with the killer’s unique ‘signature’ and one of his junior officers is attacked, Matt starts to believ [...]

    21. Ten Stars! Its 2:45am and I've just finished this book! I would say its been one of the most exciting books I've read for a long time! I love joy Ellis novels and have to say this stand alone book is a cracker. I was reading to get to the end as was totally enthralled and engrossed in the storys now finished and I'm exhausted. Great story. Great book!!

    22. Oooh it's always good when you discover a new author, and last night I found Joy! This is an excellent murder mystery, with plenty of twists and double bluffs, and a flawed hero. Can't wait to dive into the rest of her books.

    23. Great read!!I thoroughly enjoyed this book.I don't have anything to compare it too. Grilling till the end. Can't wait to read another.

    24. I thought I had this book figured out halfway through, but it turns out the author is quite clever. Very enjoyable and nail biting read.

    25. Good thing I Been like it works It's a free for all the cities that are available for citizens in the Arizona state of America the only way to get it work

    26. Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Ballard is on the verge of retirement when a letter arrives with evidence linking back to the unsolved murders of three boys, from when he was a PC back in 1991, a case that has always haunted him. Another boy shows up with all hallmarks of the old case, is the killer back after all this time? Now I have to be admit this is the first book I’ve read by Joy Ellis and I have to say it won’t be the last! This is also a stand-alone which for other people who haven [...]

    27. UnbelievableI find it absolutely incredible that someone can sit down and write such stories for the Nikki Galena and Jackman/Evans series then come up with a different hero and a totally different plot but which is every bit as gripping as any stories that have gone before. I'll now read it once more to pick out any nuances I may have missed.

    28. Absolute tosh!I cannot remember the last time I read such far fetched nonsense, I just kept on going in the hope it would improve, sadly it was not to be. As far as the huge twist is concerned, you just couldn't make it up, oh, I forgot, Joy Ellis just did!! The previous reviewers must have read a different book to me, either that or they were extremely gullible. Ahh well, that's a few hours of my life I won't get back.
