within two different states with divisive social circles Book six in the series was the third in a row to feature the hard working, endearingly flawed, resilient, and devastatingly handsome classic car mechanics of the Abbott family I could almost smell the motor oil as Ms Trentham s agile use of lush details cunningly employed all the senses and painted a complete, spectacular, and vivid picture for the mind s eye while also smoothly keying in the emotional tone The writing was well balanced and expertly paced while evocative, amusing, steamy, and heart squeezing with crisscrossing and engaging storylines I enjoyed the verbal sparring and developing romance as well as the surprises from the unfolding secrets of family drama all culminating into a highly satisfying HEA I keep hoping for prequel scenes to chronicle the now elderly aunties hellion salad days, as I m quite certain they had them flag 29 likesLike see review View 1 comment Jul 08, 2018 Nicola rated it really Abbott who, when we last left Cottonbloom, was furious that his brother, Ford had sold his share of the family garage to a wealthy divorcee and made his feelings perfectly clear Ella Boudreaux was a force of nature, and he wasn t confident they could batten down the windows and survive her Mack may have a poor view of the woman who has invested in Abbott Brothers Garage and Restoration, but Ella is incredibly likeable, smart, savvy and determined to play her part in raising their profile Things may be fraught at first, but we soon discover that she and Mack are somewhat kindred spirits and, as their attraction builds and they begin to spend time together, it becomes evident that whilst both are as stubborn as each other, both have huge hearts and are also lonely, no matter how well they disguise it If this is a mistake, it s a pretty damn sweet one Together Mack and Ella are quite possibly the sexiest of the Cottonbloom couples and as the heat rises between them, they create passion, heartfelt moments and humour And whilst there is some drama thrown into the mix, Trentham pitches it perfectly, keeping it poignant but also on the lighter end of the scale My job is to make sure you understand you re not less than You re everything As always, Laura Trentham has created a couple to fall in love with and if Set the Night on Fire is the final visit to Cottonbloom, it not only ends the Abbott s stories on a high but the series as a whole That said, after reading the epilogue, I m not so sure this is the last we ll see of all the characters we ve met and I for one will be at the front of the queue if that s the case I realized instead of a raging grizzly bear, you re of a cuddly teddy bear Copy received courtesy of St Martin s Press for an honest and unbiased opinion flag 29 business to Ella Boudreaux, and outsider, not family, and a woman that seems to rub him up the wrong way Initially that is I m a total bitch aren t I It s part of your charm This is my favorite of the three Abbott books, I loved Mack, and Ella provided a strong counterbalance to all his growly alphaness As a divorcee with than a little baggage, shes trying to forge her own way in the world, her part ownership in the garage just the tip of the iceberg Her ideas are sound, his brothers aren t as against her involvement as Mack would have liked, and what starts out as a prickly association soon starts to turn into something else entirely Tell me your dreams Maybe someday but not tonight Tonight, I want the real thing Both characters hold their cards very close to their chest when it comes to displaying emotion, and dealing with their demons, but with each new thing they learn about the other they realize they have in common than they originally thought She was a spring breeze teasing his hibernating heart. I pretty much read this book in one sitting, I love this author s books and I love getting to return to the setting in which this series has been based around Although the Abbott s have now all settled down, and the bonus epilogue tied everything off perfectly in that regard, I really hope Laura has some stories to tell and characters to share with us with the town of Cottonbloom meandering his share of the family auto shop After seeing Ella for the first time, he is hoping she ll be a silent partner and give him desperately needed time to scrimp and save to buy her out He definitely doesn t count of Ella being a hands on type of partner and he is blinded sided by the deep attraction that he feels for her The he gets to know about her, the intrigued he is But Ella has walls around her heart that Mack is determined to break down I loved that Ella was such a strong character The death of her brother really shaped her young life and her attempt to distance herself from her home life, lead her to grab on to the first person to show her some attention, that someone turned out to be a nightmare than a dream come true though I liked that she didn t mope or whine about the past, Ella picked herself up and focused on making herself happy and pursuing a life dependent from others Her explosive chemistry with Mack was unexpected but again, she isn t afraid to explore their connection rather, she s wary of how deep that connection runs and whether or not it s one sided Mack and Ella s love story has steamy heat, real passion, great banter and a connection that you can feel, up front and center from page one I ve probably said this before but I love visiting Cottonbloom The author has painted such a scenic town and it s still full of past and present supporting bought the share in the Abbott garage in memory of her older brother who loved cars and taught her to drive when she was just twelve years old She s determined to carve out a new life, alone, in Cottonbloom starting with the Abbott garage.I had really high hopes for this one, the start of it kind of reminded me a little of Sutton and Wyatt s story and I was hoping for a rich woman meets surly mechanic romance with a soup on of Pride and Prejudice thrown in for good measure Of course the reality was somewhat different Mack is floundering, he and his brother are at odds, his two younger brothers are happily loved up, his mother who he hasn t seen since he was young has resurfaced, and even the bolthole of the family business has been contaminated by Ella buying Ford s share He s lonely and troubled that his relationship with Ford has broken down so badly, and maybe a bit guilty as well He takes all of his frustration and guilt out on Ella, but this sophisticated little society woman has a steel core and won t stand any of his bluster At the same time as he is fighting her with every fibre of his being he is also very slightly turned on by her feisty attitude and refusal to back down.I liked this, I like the small town vibe, the family business, a woman building a new life for herself without having to put others down in the process But it wasn t without fault I felt that Ella s constant references to her saintly brother were repetitive and became tiresome Similarly, she jumped to ridiculous conclusions about Mack and his motivations I thought she was being ridiculously obtuse and determined to think the worst, no matter what Mack did or said Luckily, Mack made it all better He was a big gruff intimidating man who finds recipes on Pinterest and makes art from metal. If you like second chance romances with couples who have faced adversity and come through it stronger, small towns and BBQ then this is the romance for you.I received a free copy of this in the series focuses on Ella and Mack s story If you have read Cottonbloom 5, you ll know that a big event in that book was when Mack s brother Ford wanted to sell the Abbot Brothers Garage, which has been in the family for years, to a wealthy lady Sutton Mize, who also has a hotspot for Mack Ella and Mack are a sexy, sassy and fun couple and, as in other books in the story, there are a lot of hot moments between these two, as there always are in Cottonbloom books Ella is a realistic and honest character who does not like dogs because of a past incident River the dog is as much a part of the story as all the human characters Willa took River in when she was dumped at her trailer park and they are inseperable Ella has a fight on her hands when she must try to conquer her fear of dogs and also realise what she truly feels for Mack at times There s plenty of tension and action in this gripping romance What I love about Laura Trentham s books are that she really has a knack for getting inside characters heads and representing their internal and external conflicts as well as backstory to create novels that I never want to finish Jackson and Wyatt are also in this book as well as some mention of Megan s and Trevor s story Author Laura Trentham does an anmazing job of writing fast paced, sexy romances set in the homely town of Cottonbloom 5 stars The plot and characterisation in this book is just as flawless as it is Thanks to Laura Trentham and St Martin s Press for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review I m honoured to take part in both the Release Blitz and Blog Tour for this title It was a real pleasure to revisit Cottonbloom again via the pages of this book I hope that there are books in the Cottonbloom series flag 3 likesLike see After a few books into a small town series you begin to feel like you could walk down the streets and know where everything is I also love the noisiness of them Everyone knows everyone and their business I ve loved the Cottonbloom series for a lot of reasons Great characters, good writing and a town that is two states How cool is that In Set the Night on Fire we finally have Mack s book I just loved him from the minute I met him He was just such a gruff man, you could also see how he was fighting to keep everything together For a very long time he s tried to keep everyone happy and together and I think along the way he forgot about himself Plus he needed to learn that there was no one right way of doing things Sometimes you need help from others He needed a person like Ella to come into his life and shake it up a littleor a lot She s perfect for that Her need to be a part of something and her refusal to back down has these two butting heads than once It makes for good reading I liked how they helped each other work through their baggage Life isn t always easy but when you have someone standing there for you it helps and these two were that for each other Even when they didn t know it I m glad that Mack was able to fix many of the personal things in his life that he needed too Sometimes we have to let go of the pain and try to start fresh Set the Night on Fire might be my favorite of the brothers stories I just not sure because I also loved them Let s just say that at this moment it s my favorite Once I read another book of hers who knows I would read this story in order or at least the brothers part Otherwise you might feel as if you are missing something The brothers play a big part in this story and there is a little story arc that starts with Leave the Night On and goes through When the Stars Come Out and ends somewhat in Set the Night on Fire If it was me I would start with Kiss Me That Way and work myself through the series Everyone of the stories are very good I m still holding out hope that we will get Clayton Preston s story He s just one of those characters that you can t forget about since he was introduced I wouldn t be happy if we don t get his story There is just something about him that needs to be told Plus at the end of the story we see that Maggie Mize has her eye on him Now that would make for a good story Follow me on and that made for some really great sexual tension and wild chemistry I love that the attraction between them was clear from the beginning, but that they both struggled to reconcile that attraction with the bumping of heads when it came to the garage Ella just wants to have a piece of something that reminds her of her brother and to prove to people that she can be successful after, and despite of, her divorce Mack just wants to keep the garage owned by Abbotts because he s trying to do what he thinks is best for family Like he always does I also have a thing for slow burning romances You know, the ones where you can see what s coming from a mile away but the author just keeps torturing you You re just waiting with bated breath for the tension to finally snap and for them to give into their feelings Meanwhile the author is developing the characters and furthering the storyline in a way that is absolutely necessary for that tension to break and you just can t stop reading Laura Trentham has mastered the art of character and world building Sure I m focused on the romance, but I m also invested in the family dynamics, revisiting previous characters couples and just falling in love with the town of Cottonbloom This is a well rounded, thoughtful series that just keeps getting better with every book I never would ve thought I d actually be looking forward to Ford Abbott s memorable characters, Laura Trentham s Cottonbloom series will be for you Set the Night on Fire, the sixth novel in the series, has the right combination of small town charm, sense of humor, and a sizzling enemies to lovers trope.Mack is the stubborn Abbott whose life revolves around the garage that was his father s legacy, and now Ella Boudreaux, a woman rumors say has taken everything from her ex in a divorce settlement, owns a portion of the garage and seems to think she can interfere with its running.Ella, however, is not who everyone thinks she is In fact, she s the one who added to her ex husband s wealth She s the one with the business savvy And, now she s the one with her ex husband s wife living with her How did that happen She s also the one who bought a part of the garage for sentimental reasons. Both Mack and Ella are big hearted and so attracted to each other that they almost ignite when they come into contact They are also written with so much depth, exuding good as well as bad qualities, that they seem like real people. My only disappointment was the fact that Mac s visit to see his estranged mother seemed too much like Jackson and Willa s visit in When the Stars Come Out you can read my review of that novel here you know, deja vu all over again. While Set the Night on Fire is the sixth book in the Cottonbloom series, it is definitely a standalone I never had that feeling of being inundated with characters from previous novels, although it was quite obvious that Mack s brothers already had their own stories At some point, I will happily go back in Cottonbloom time and read the other novels in the series as Trentham is now a must read author for me.Read this if you like small town romance with humor and eccentric characters.I received an ARC in inviting me to read an advance copy of this book because I would have really been missing out if I hadn t found her This is small town romance at its best, with a welcoming, vibrant setting, quirky, endearing, unique secondary characters and that heartwarming, inviting feel that absorbs the reader into the story The people of Cottonbloom were so enticing I was ready to look it up on the map, jump in my car and point it in the direction of this terrific town on the river.I enjoyed everything about this book with its wonderful sense of family and community, a bit of an enemies to lovers romance, and the growth, self actualizing, forgiveness and healing these characters experienced I loved Ella, with her strength, stubbornness and determination, but still a hint of insecurity And grumbly, growly Mack, working so hard to honor his father s memory that he didn t realize how closed off he had become from the people in his life or what he was missing as a result He s strong and stoic, but his hint of vulnerability and the way he dealt with it are what really made me love him Mack and Ella butted heads and had some major fireworks between them, and watching them figuring out they could lean on the other and also be strong for the other was immensely satisfying If you re looking for an enchanting, delightful, evocative, heartfelt, small town read, grab this one now You won t be sorry smart and investment savvy, and has managed to build quite a tidy nest egg, through her keen sense of business potential and investments She has, in fact, offered the Abbott brothers or one brother, Ford some ready cash and a chance for something else by purchasing his shares She now has a quarter of the business, and two hundred percent of the animosity coming off Mack Abbott in waves Mack is furious that Ford would sell his shares to an outsider, and a woman at that It is a garage and having a woman, yet another woman show up unexpectedly is just not on See, Mack s mother has suddenly
