from home Of course a boy his age has no idea what to do but Logan survived pretty well out in the world by himself He found a treehouse to live in and he bought a few bananas for food and whenever needed he was prepared to go dumster diveing Logan was never considered a missing boy so no one ever came looking for him This child living alone on the streets was terrible and the way his father treated him was even worse I thought Logan was very compassionate and loveing and thoughtful and so on and so forth Logan stole towel from a lady named Joannes house but then he considered her feeling about the towel and remembered his grandmothers facial expression everytime that he upset her so he brought the towel back Thats compassionate and thoughtful behavior Logan also rescued Joannes dog from chocking to death and thats being loveing and careing and whatever other feeling that i am missing Kids are not like that these days only handfuls of them really care for others I am happy to say his grandmother, a speech therapist, an elderly woman, and a married couple while keeping the main story of Logan and his plight front and center I really enjoyed the ending and I hope that if McQuestion does a follow up book that maybe we can turn our attentions on the married couple Paul and Laura Half a Heart is about 9 year old Logan Weber who runs away from his abusive father We find out that Logan s life has been a virtual hell since his mother passed away Unable to speak, he is forced to use his hands or write down what is going on with him His father is often drunk and abusive Logan and his father are living with a woman and her young daughter who does her best to ensure that Logan is on the receiving end of his father s violence When Logan stows away in a moving van, he ends up in Wisconsin and finds a tree house that just seems to be waiting for him.The story follows several people, but for the most part you are going to follow Logan and read his sad story about what became of his mother and how terrible his home life has become with his father He s very smart and does what he can to survive when he realizes that being in Wisconsin and homeless is still better than returning home to his father and his rages Joanne is an elderly widow who is hesitant to go and live with her son and his family in Seattle She wants to stay in her home with her dog Samson and continue to be part of the community I did find Joanne to be a bit much at times since she definitely comes across as nosy with regards to her new neighbors but she was such a great character to find out about Joanne comes into contact with Logan when she spots a young boy who she thinks stole one of her towels and possibly threw a tomato at her dog She eventually seeks out her new neighbors to warn them that they may have a thief in the neighborhood.Laura and Paul are happily married though Laura feels like something is missing due to them not having children Laura is an artist and should be thrilled she got asked to do a really cool installation, but she wants to go forward with being a foster parent Problem is her husband is not so keen on trying to foster Logan s speech therapist even gets a scene here and there and you find out that she did what she could to look out for him, but still worries about what became of him Logan s grandmother ends up coming into the story when she finally is able to track down the last place he lived via the help of a private investigator she hires The writing was really good As I said, McQuestion did a great job with moving the main story line forward with shifting points of view I was worried the whole time for Logan and how the ending would be handled The flow was great too and I didn t have any trouble keeping the different characters straight in my head You don t need a chapter heading or anything to call out who is speaking I think writing it in third person definitely helped with that The setting of this book is Chicago and Wisconsin McQuestion does a great job of showing Wisconsin and you can see why Logan falls in love with the nearby creek, the tree house, and just the general area The ending will definitely make you smile All parties seem to be on the start of something new good flag 7 likesLike see review Jul 25, 2018 Kathryn rated it it was ok Shelves drama, fiction, ya Logan is being abused disappointing or plain ignorant Those who like happy stories will find their fantasies fulfilled I remember from the age of 10 thinking about running away but I knew that I would be found I can see why another reviewer dissected the book I thought she was being a little to serious at the time but I can see how this would sow false hope to those is this age group for getting out of abusive situations The system in the U.S is woefully against any one who doesn t fit the narrative , meanwhile those abused as this story outlines continue to be ignored As a survivor of severe abuse that many have asked me to stop sharing because of their personal distress, I can only say that this story is very realistic in its description of the type of abuse that is allowed to occur. While writing this review, I recalled having seen an article one the loss of around a thousand children by one of the Child Protective organizations in the midwest in the last 12 months or so, I believe it was Kansas but links have disappeared on Google oh what a shocker and on youtube as well no surprise there as two channels I watch have been removed just this week for no reason supplied I spent than 30 minutes trying to find even one account of this heinous lack of supervision but alas I was unsuccessful BTW, my former career required doing research as part of the decision making process flag 6 emotional, significant, and thought provoking story The genre for this story is Fiction The topics discussed in this story are important issues that happen in society today. The Author describes her characters as flawed, complicated and complex possibly due to the circumstances If you are emotional like me, be sure to have Kleenex ready The father in the story is an angry alcoholic, living in a dysfunctional way He is portrayed as a bully and takes his anger out on his 9 year old son Logan Logan has been emotionally traumatized and physically abused by the hands of his father Terrified of his father, Logan runs away Besides the emotional and physical scars that 9 year old Logan has, he can t speak From what he has seen, psychologically, Logan can t talk He is mute His mother is dead He has been told his beloved Grandmother has died. What is so disturbing to me, that in Logan s adventures, no one seems to want to see a neglected skinny boy, with a taped shoe Fortunately, there have been a few wonderful and kind teachers in his life.Logan is resourceful and manages to hide, and get food for a few days The people he seems to meet are kind and concerned Not only do some people touch Logan s life, but Logan has made a difference in a few people s life as well I like that there is a lovable dog in the story as well.Logan doesn t know his Grandmother is alive, has been searching for him She has hired a detective His abusive father kept moving around, and purposely excluded her from Logan s life Logan s Grandmother knows that the father is a very dangerous man The Grandmother keeps tearfully saying that Logan is half of her heart How will Logan be safe Will his Grandmother be able to find Logan I appreciate that the author brings up such significant issues as physically and emotionally abused children, bullying, alcoholism, addiction and violence What does it take to help the victims, and stop the violence The author also discusses the importance of family, friends, hope and love I would highly recommend this novel for those who read fiction I received an Advanced Reading Copy from NetGalley for my honest review flag 3 likesLike see review Apr abused boy who ran away to escape his alcoholic father I feel that overall it was a good book but the writing just seemed to be for a younger audience and didn t match the heatbreaking story Also there were too many coincidences to be realistic It was like a Hallmark movie, you kind of knew how it was going to end when it started But a feel good book if you are looking for something light flag Logan is a young boy being raised by an abusive father after the tragic death of his mother He also happens to be mute It makes his father angry that he doesn t speak, angrier still after drinking He views it as a weakness, not the strength that it truly is.Logan is a crack kid , meaning that he keeps falling through the cracks of a broken system He goes to school after school because his father moves him around alot Not one teacher gets in touch with authorities though He is obviously being neglected, and possibly abused, and still no one steps up for the mute kid with sad eyes. The only person that cared for him after his mother s death was his grandmother He was told she died, so he suffers alone He tries hard to be the kind of person she would want him to be while being almost invisible at home It makes his father less aware of him, so less likely to abuse him Invisibility isn t always the answer and he feels not only pain from punishment but also pain from hunger, shame and embarrassment. After an incident that Sparks his father s rage again, Logan is on his own He is smarter than most nine year olds and very resourceful He has freedom for the very first time and makes great use of it His adventures are a bit atypical for a boy his age but nothing about Logan s story is typical. It s premise is too familiar to anyone with eyes or ears The prevalence of child abuse is truly horrifying Child abductions disappearances are so disgustingly common that we rarely go than a few days without one being reported. The pace and continuity were steady and flowing aided along by correct punctuation and grammar The style of writing is very conversational and easy to read Logan especially comes off as an authentic voice Each character plays an inportant role and the author weaves them together like a basket maker. His fear and treatment make this book hard to read Harder for me, was the sponge like way that he absorbed all of the emotions flung his way, regardless of whether it was love and kindness, or fear and rage He was so utterly desperate for any kind of connection that he took it all in and shouldered the load It broke me It really did And then the stormI would have liked a bit a finished ending What became of Tia and her mom Will Joanne move Will Robert give up so easily I still recommend this book I really think books like this should be required reading for those that touch the lives of children, ie teachers, social workers, etc We need to fill in the cracks so no kids fall through them We need to fight for the voiceless among us from different authors for reviewing and loved them This one however truly will stay on my mind for a long time.Logan is a 9 year old little boy who can t talk and is living a tough life His dad is a mean drunk who loves to bully him, beat him and blame him for everything that goes wrong Logan takes it and keeps on going He has learned how to become invisible when he needs too Logan has not spoken since his mom died when he was about 6 years old Just one thing for his dad to blame on him.Logan ends up running away out of pure fear of his dad He is terrified of the jerk He hides in the back of a moving truck and ends up in another state He has to fend for himself and does a pretty good job of it He has five dollars to his name and dressed in rags Shoes that are so worn that one is held together by duct tape He knows or believes if he ever has to go back to his dad that the man will kill him He decides that if he is caught he will say he can t remember anything He can t talk anyway Logan has no idea that his Grandma Nan is looking for him He believes she died That s what his dad had told him She s been looking for him and thought she had found him But they had moved just a few months prior to that She won t give up though She finds out where he was last seen but so did his dad who took off after him Ok I could keep telling you about this story and possibly give something away but I won t I can t stand for anyone to tell me anything about a book I m reading, other than it s good, so I don t do it to others Just believe me it s a great book A very emotional, sad yet happy in parts too, keep you on the edge story that you won t soon forget Logan will worm his way into your heart and stay there He s a very lovable little boy who does the right thing even when he is desperate and alone He s a survivor for sure and his Grandma Nan never gives up.It s just a great book I loved it I wish I could truly do this book justice but the words just won t come It s one you wasn t like other books that I ve read It was very upbeat but had dark undertones that made you sad and worried I liked how we got a bit of background information on what was happening from the grandmother, and from her eyes we got a different story For as it turns out she hasn t died and has been searching for her missing grandson ever since he was taken from her life I think that my favourite part and the part that made it stand out from other abuse novels was the fact that you weren t seeing it through the child s eyes you got many different perspectives as well as different pieces of information at different times that changed your mind on things You got to see what was happening with Logan and how he dealt with it but you also go to see from the grandmother s eyes as she searched for her missing grandson after getting stopped turn after turn Overall good book and I m glad that I got the chance to read it flag Like see review Jun 06, 2018 Vivian rated it it was
