    3. So Emergency Contact isn't a light, fluffy rom-com. There are pretty intense elements of the story that gives it an almost bittersweet vibe to it. It's an epitome of a slice-of-life drama: conversations and relationships explored realistically and quick, sharp dialogue. It's not a book for everyone. It's essentially a snapshot of human habits and feelings - the lives lived - through the third person POV's of Penny and Sam. There is not exactly a focus on one thing, but important discussion is se [...]

    4. I really enjoyed this story of Penny, a prickly wannabe writer with some serious mother issues, and Sam, an aspiring documentary filmmaker caught in the clutches of a truly heinous ex-girlfriend. Sam and Penny's worlds are equally well-imagined, peopled with vivid ensemble characters, and they both have satisfying character arcs. Eleanor & Park is an obvious but appropriate comp.

    5. NetGalley provided a copy of the eBook in exchange for an honest review.Emergency Contact by Mary H. K. Choi is an original young adult novel. The reader meets Penny Lee as she is beginning college. She is trying to leave so much behind. Penny dreams of becoming a writer. Sam has dreams of his own—to become a filmmaker—he is currently homeless. This unlikely pair becomes each other's emergency contact. They begin to text and reveal themselves via their messages. They share their hopes, dream [...]

    6. I feel bad because there is so much good in this book I wanna discuss but every time I try all I can think is I SHIP IT. I SHIP IT SO HARD.

    7. I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.I went into this expecting a light fluffy romance and came away with so much more. The characters are well developed and have a lot going on in their lives. They are so complicated and human that you really feel for them as you follow their story.Penny and Sam's interactions are delightful, and I loved how they helped each other through their hard times. Well written, definitely more to it than a cute romance!

    8. I had to immediately request this book from NetGalley when I saw that it was recommended for fans of "Eleanor & Park". Much to my excited glee, my request was accepted! While I really enjoyed this book, I wouldn't necessarily plunk it down in the same grouping as "Eleanor and Park". I loved the characterization in this novel. The witty banter between Penny and Sam was my jam. I loved that they were two normal humans. With regular human problems and feelings, as well as the regular drama that [...]

    9. DNFed at 20%.(view spoiler)[I just got really uncomfortable with the passages in the ARC in which Penny realizes that she wants to be a writer. I'll describe it below but my decision to DNF is entirely personal and because of my own thoughts on the subject. I debated continuing the book but I was not really connecting with Penny and trigger warnings for the book mentioned rape which I do not want to read. The scene that made me uncomfortable is when Penny describes wanting to write because of how [...]

    10. Read the full review at lucieninthestars! I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Mary H.K. Choi's debut novel Emergency Contact is a story of friendship and love, and overcoming grief through the deep connects formed even over short periods of times. A touching novel about self-realization and forgiveness, it's a very strong story and I am extremely happy that I was lucky enough to get the ARC. NOTE: This book contains an example of sexual as [...]

    11. This might just be one of the cutest books I've read in a while - and it was exactly what I was looking for right now! Thanks so much to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC for an honest review, as always, all opinions are my own.**FULL REVIEW TO COME CLOSER TO RELEASE DATE**

    12. 4.5/5 stars This is the type of book that you sit and think about after reading it. It's not particularly thought-provoking but it's the kind of story you don't know what to make of. It's the story of two broken people who learn to be broken together and that being broken isn't bad. I love the characters. I love Penny so much and I love how she thinks. I love how her backstory influences her thoughts and actions without it being obvious. ugh, Penny *heart eyes* The novel addresses diversity in a [...]

    13. I LOVED this book least, the first three-quarters. I loved the humor, the writing, and the character's voices. I could not wait to get home to continue reading each day.Which made the incomplete and sudden ending even more upsetting and frustrating. Everything was going so great and then it justended.I would love to know if this is just a Part One. Ultimately I would still recommend it. I laughed out loud throughout this entire story and absolutely fell in love with these characters. I was absol [...]

    14. I absolutely loved this book because it isn't a light and fluffy romcom, but deals with real life problems people deal with: the newness of starting a new life at college, issues with parents, sexual assault, and relationships. The writing is fantastic and evokes real emotion, drawing you in. It drew me in so much that I read this entire book in one sitting. Loved it!I received an advance copy of the book for review purposes.

    15. Rounding to 2 stars (1.5).I received an ARC and was so hopeful that I’d love this book. Pieces were ok. Lines. Sentences. Fragments. But the actual story, the entire book. Wow. No. I was not a fan of PennyI actually think I liked Jude’s story better. This entire book felt like one big cliche. The Korean part. The stereotypes. The main characters - all the characters - had so many ding dang dong issues going on. I couldn’t handle it. The dialogue killed me. One minute it was teen jargon lik [...]

    16. Synopsis:For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anything about her. When Penny heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind.Sam’s stuck. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a ma [...]

    17. /TW in book for rape, panic attacks, and alcoholismI received this as a digital copy ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is my first time reviewing a book so sorry if it's not the most well done. This story is very charming with the characters that each have their own tone. The way that Penny and Sam fit together with their chemistry is enticing and keeps you reading because don’t we all want someone who we can connect with in a way that understands us and accepts us? I fo [...]

    18. Arc provided by NetGalley! So this was definitely a roller coaster of a book, and that’s pretty much how I feel about it. It had its ups and downs, and while I ended up liking it in the end, it still felt lacking. Also for a 400-some page book it felt surprisingly short. So, I did like the characters, Sam and Penny. Their lives developed outside of their relationship with each other (though I felt Sam’s had a little more depth), and though their origin was a little weird (he has a panic attack [...]

    19. I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. From the publisher - From debut author, Mary H.K. Choi comes a compulsively readable novel that shows young love in all its awkward glory—perfect for fans of Eleanor & Park and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. For Penny Lee high school was a total non-event. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anyth [...]

    20. Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. What a pleasant surprise. I went into this book with no expectations, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were relatable and easy to feel for. I only could partially relate to some events, but I could easily sympathize with the characters since they were well-written. I grew to really like Penny throughout the book and further felt for her and her flaws.Emergency Contact follows Penny and Sa [...]

    21. Young people are infuriating. This book had many faults, but the characters were clever and quick-witted and I haven't read a romance in a long time so it was refreshing. The prose was super colloquial so it was a quick and easy readeven though I had to read it on my phone. Oh also it was an ARC from Netgalley, so I didn't get too annoyed by the occasional copy edit misses because I assume they'll be fixed before the final version is releasedAnyway, things I hated:-Penny's teenage angst against [...]

    22. I love this book! It's a hug in book form even though it touches on some very dark topics.Penny is awkward and eccentric in a rather lovable way that made me wish my awkwardness were half as adorable. She is fixed in her ways but grows immensely as the plot develops and I loved seeing how Choi played it out. There’s also a lot to like in Sam and following along in his own struggles gives the book an extra oomph – it keeps the book from being a single note and turns it into a full-on melody o [...]

    23. 4.5/5I received a free e-arc in exchange of an honest review. The First thing I’m going to say is that I want more. Way more. I want to read about Sam and Penny for the rest of my life. I want to know everything about them. I fell in love with the characters the minute I started reading. The author created amazing, diverse, and strong characters. They are humans, with flaws, and weakness, but they are also so real and raw. I enjoyed the awkwardness their relationship brought up. I love the fac [...]

    24. Gorgeous cover and a strong debut. One reviewer described it as "broken characters realizing that being broken together isn't all bad" and I very much agree. A lot happens and at the same time nothing really happens. I liked the characters, but at times there was just a touch too much angst. Penny is unique and I loved the way she thought. The moment she has with Mallory on the beach is one if my favourites. Sam is just wonderful. Completely and utterly broken, but I love how aware he is and how [...]

    25. Thank you to the publisher for sending me an ARC of this novel, it has not affected my opinion whatsoever. I just want to preface that I enjoyed this novel, I just think it can make a lot of improvements. Although this novel is light because of the romance and the interactions between certain characters, it also touches on more serious topics: mental health, rape, racism, alcoholism, immigration, etc. I appreciate the representation. However, it felt like the author made Penny Lee, the main char [...]

    26. Penny Lee didn't hate high school but she didn't love it either just was. So when Penny head off to college in a different town, with no one from her high school, she is ready for a fresh start; a new chapter in her life that doesn't include her being 100% apathetic or being the grown up to her mother.Upon meeting her roommate, a girl that Penny has nothing in common with, she is quickly introduced to Jude's friend and quasi-uncle Sam. When a weird encounter with Sam leads to Penny and him excha [...]
