    About "Cate Tiernan"

      • Cate Tiernan

was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961 New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me Kids in other cities have lemonade stands we sold voodoo gris gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies It s a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of control There s an air of lassitude there, a general acceptance of eccentic or flamboyant behavior the heat simply makes people do crazy things.I went to school in New York, and after school went back to New Orleans Then I went back to New York Manhattan and got a job in publishing and started writing My first book, a young, middle grade chapter book, was published in 1990.Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn t have a lot of money There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans Are you seeing a pattern here While I was in NY, I helped edit The Secret Circle by L.J Smith I thought it was great We stayed in New Orleans five years By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live I was glad my children were born in New Orleans I had been born there, and my father had, and his father had, and his father had and so on There was something about the connection of generations of blood coming from one place that I found very primal and important. Now I live in a cohousing community in Durham, NC This is the most suburban place I ve ever lived, and it s very different from living right in the middle of a city For one thing, there aren t enough coffee shops However, it s incredibly safe, and the community is very important to me There are a lot of strong women here, and I find them inspiring.Am I a witch Well, no Even Wicca is too organized a religion for me I m much idiosyncratic and just need to do my own thing, which is kind of new agey and pantheistic It s not that I don t work or play well with others, but I need to decide for myself when I do a certain thing, and how I do it However, I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman centeredness and its essentially female identity I love those aspects, among others.I have several favorite writers Barbara Hambly has been the biggest influence on how I describe magic She s an incredibly imaginative and empathetic writer with a gift for creating a rich, sensual world I love Barbara Pym, an English writer whose books came out mostly in the fifties She was a master at describing the thousand tiny moments that make up a woman s day how the seemingly small and inconsequential thing can suddenly take on a huge emotional importance I greatly admire P.D James She s one of the very few writers who makes me actually look up words in the dictionary She has a beautiful, precise, educated command of the language that leaves me in awe I love Philip Larkin s poetry I read a lot of nonfiction and also have some favorite romance writers Before anyone groans, let me say that these women write really well about women trying to achieve emotional fulfillment, and that s kind of what we re all doing, right I also just like reading about sex Anyway, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and early Linda Howard are my faves. And then of course there s my dark side, but on that later SourceCate Tiernan is a pseudonym for Gabrielle Charbonnet

    1. this series is very good. it is creepy and a little romantic. i like the characters. i can not wait to see how the series ends.

    2. Still good BUT!Looks like the romance in this series comes in a distant second to the actual story. That is fine though. Now that I realize that there is only a hint of romance, I can stop feeling let down by the lack of girl/boy/girl action and focus all my attention on on finding out how the story is resolved in book #4.

    3. First port of call with this review is how unattractive is that cover please?! I apologise to everyone who likes it, but really, it looks pretty, well, not pretty. I'm so glad I have the bind up edition with the twins front and centre on it, I can tell you that. In other news, I was surprisingly really excited to read this installment of the series, which really confused me. Having previously given A Chalice of Wind 2.5 stars and A Circle of Ashes 3 stars, I really couldn't comprehend why I was [...]

    4. I loved the first 2 books in this series. There was just something with the third book that irritated me. The love triangle going on was one part of it. And just all the going around and I was confused at some points it's just a series I won't be finishing

So [...]

    6. Review on Balefire #3: A Feather of Stone By: Cate TiernanThis third book is one amazing chapter into both Thais and Clio's lives. As young girls who definitely training to become powerful, they encounter wierd things that go on. In the beginning a snake comes and tries to attack Thais and Clio, brave enough the attack didn't last long. Another attack was where Clio's car ended up in flames and that was like their nan's house that had been put in flames. Clio and Thais want to become immortal, b [...]

    8. This was pretty bad. There were a couple of good points but as a whole it was really bad. The Characters haven't been developed much after the previous book. The author has remained safe and stuck with shallow stereotypes for her characters. Especially Clio, she has absolutely no depth, it is irritating. THese books don't even get into any deeper side to the religion, it just discusses magick in a very shallow and weak way without putting any deeper meaning into it, it just seems its there for t [...]

    9. (Reviewed for PSCRB)Clio and Thais are still getting used to the idea of having each other as identical twins, having been separated at birth. Clio looks forward to the big magyck rite, while Thais is very unsure of it all. Daedelus has pulled together the other 10 who were turned immortal in a similar rite 250 years before, along with the twins. He wants more power, but what do the others want? Who is still trying to kill the twins? What happened to the original witch who did the rite 250 years [...]

    10. This book revealed more secrets about the coven's past and the love growing on Luc. Clio and Richard somehow begin to have random desire for one another, but Clio doesn't want anything to do with Richard since she says she loves Luc. thais and Luc are in love with one another but Thais is hurt by the game Luc created between her and her twin. Other than the love story, the book ended with the coven making treize to end their immortally. But somehow it did not succeed. What I love about this book [...]

    11. I'm not sure what to say about this book. I start to dislike most characters even more. And even the ones I didnt hate yet, I'm starting to So far the only one that's Sane, is Thais. Which is by now, the only one I dont dislike. One of my bigger problems with these books for me, is, there are too many characters I really dislike. They are dark, have hidden agendas, are secretive, drink WAY TOO much.Overall the books are okay, but I only keep on reading, cos I wanna know how it ends (stupid curio [...]

    12. More secrets were revealed both about the twin and about the people in the coven. For 200 years or so, the coven had been getting ready for another treize. A lot of planning needed to be done and now that there is a twin there are exactly enough people, 13. Richard, a guy from the coven gets more involved with the twin than before. There's something between him and Clio, but neither of them would admit to that fact. Clio is still not over Luc yet and she sees nothing in Richard. From the beginni [...]

    13. In the third book of the Balefire series, Thais and Clio continue to grow closer and to grow their magic. And the attempts on thier lives continue. The rest of group needed to reproduce the spell that made the Trieze members immortal in the first place. As the time for the spell grows closer, tempers and fear runs high. This series is lots of fun. It only took me so long to read the book because it was my lunch book and I did not get to it every day. While I like the sweep series better, this se [...]

    14. I picked up this young adult series on a whim but was immediately hooked. The premise isn't wildly original, but I found the characters interesting and engaging -- and the conclusion after four books was satisfying. Thais, our heroine, suffers from the typical complaint many have about young adult heroines -- no supervision, usually easy time getting in and out of school, etc -- but I know I would have just eaten all of that up at 17. This series was the kind of book I wanted, with someone who h [...]

    17. A great third part in this series. I still love reading Thais more than Clio, but she's growing on me. A great story full of mystery and intrigue, that had me hanging on every word. We learn more in this book about the past, and how it will effect the future. More of the lesser characters have been explained too, which was good for the storyline. A tale of fantasy and witchcraft, and one I highly recommend. Can't wait to read the fourth, and see how this story ends! I can imagine it won't be a h [...]

    18. So i'm still waiting for Clio to be revealed as the dark twin and am fed up waiting to find out who's trying to kill the twins. Feels like i've been waiting ages, wait, 3 books is ages! I still don't really care about any members of the Treize which makes the book harder to like when after 3 books you haven't taken to any character. Only 1 left now and surely there'll be answers, satisfying or not.

    19. Nice book. It is way more obvious that Cate made this up though. The thing I loved about the Sweep series was that it all seemed very real, like it could actually happen. This is mostly because Wicca really is a religion. But in this series she describes a religion related to Wicca, which just seems less believable. But it is still a nice books, and I like the main characters in this book better.

    20. Much better than the second book in the series. There was more action and mysteries solved and new mysteries have come forth. Did the twins find out who has been attacking them? The rite finally happens and things don't go as planned. Did those who were immortal who wished to die get their wish? Did Clio get her immortality? And the big question did Deadalaus get what he wanted?I finished this book and jumped right into the final installment. This book did not disappoint.

    21. It's funny how Luc is apparently the worst womanzer walking the globe since 250 years but his brain shuts down when he sees Clios clevage.I bet my ass Richard is gonna drop the bomb that he's her ancestor 10 generations back when they're head over heels in love with each other! Oh the DRAMA there are over a thousand ancestors in between, everybody take a deep breath, it's alright. If Melita wont appear in book 4, I'll start believing her dead.

    22. i bought this book on sale at books a million, and didnt pay much attention to what it was about. just knew it was a fantasy, paranormal type book. with all that said, i did not even begin this book once i found out it was about witches. for some reason i just cannot get into a book that is strictly on witches. sorry about the false updatelol

    23. Great follow up from the first 2 books . I can't start fast enough with the 4th and last book . Although I'm adult it's a great book to read . It brings you back to your own young adult time. Your own fears in security's first love and rebellion . also I learned about the fast growing religion Wicca .

    24. Getting more intense than the first novel. Many questions are being raised yet answers seem to elude our twin heroines. Clio is becoming tempted by darker forces. Thais gets a backbone. Well somewhat.

    25. J'ai passé un moment captivant, excellent même, parfait pour se changer les idées et retrouver l'univers de la magie dont j'aime tant. Mon avis complet ici : sook-book.over-blog/articl

    26. It is really sad how I barely remember reading these books the first time, but this one blew me away. The ending was fantastic, the trouble between the Treize (i.e Mannon and Sophis as well as the jealousy of Axelle) are making them seem more "human". So sad the next book is the last one.

    27. 17/20Un troisième tome qui ne nous laisse jamais respirer, on est pris dans le tourbillon de la vie de Clio et Thais, j'ai hâte de lire la suite !!leslecturesdemylene/20
