    1. 4.5 starsFeaturing boys that surf and a friends to lovers storyline, this debut novel was refreshingly unique. Into the Blue is set mainly on the lush North Shore of Oahu and it's about Ollie and Tai. They're two best friends who have put together a family of friends (including Ollie's younger brother Jaime) all sharing a house backing onto the beach on the North Shore. Ollie's days are spent like this: up early surfing, taking his brother to school and then making ends meet with a hotel job (do [...]

    3. 4.5 StarsSo here I go again confessing another book weakness and addiction. Surfers! *sigh* I go all soft and melty whenever they float by. But come on! What’s not to love about a surfer boy? Am I alone here? Haha…I don’t think so. There’s just something special about a surfer. There’s an extra twinkle in his or her eye. Trouble, excitement, and magic in the air and waves. The grace, strength, and courage it takes to ride one of the Earth’s most awesome forces leaves me in awe. Every [...]

    4. “It wasn’t just— I guess I wanted to see what the fuss was. I wanted to know what it was like,” Ollie continues.“What? What it was like to kiss a boy?”Ollie frowns. He speaks as if it’s all so very obvious. “No. To kiss you, you fucker.”It’s frightening and irresistible. This is how Ollie imagines drowning feels at the end—not the thrashing and struggling part, the part where a person is pulled softly under the water, unable to breathe and not caring anymore. This book was s [...]

    5. Oh I needed this book! This was such a beautiful, lovely, cozy romance that just came out of nowhere and left such a good feeling in it's wake! (see what I did there;-)Also if you like the movie: Blue Crush, this book should absolutely be for you. It's not the 'same' story, but it invokes the same feelings and the same mood!Ollie and Tai have known each other for years! They are both surfers, but where Ollie is trying to get back into professional surfing after a an accident, Tai has realised th [...]

    6. THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING I NEVER KNEW I WANTED! Hawaii! Surfing! Friends to Lovers! Found Family! I usually reserve 5 start ratings for books that have touched me in a deep emotional way, but I couldn't not give 5 stars to this one when it gave me so much joy to read it. I always complain about LGBT-centered novels being predictable or not as well written as I would like, but this book does representation SO WELL. The character's sexualities are never used as part of the conflict, there aren't bi [...]

    8. i loved everything about this book. i loved the special atmosphere of hawaii with the beaches and the sand and the water, i loved my surfer boys ollie and tai, i loved the strong bond with their family, i loved the friendship and the sweet romance. it was everything i love. this book is a treasure, 10/10 recommend.

    9. 4.5 stars I'm not even sure how to coherently discuss this story. I fear that it will just be a mess of enthusiasm. Because I loved this book. It came as such a huge surprise to me. I saw a review for it in Publisher's Weekly and it immediately had my interest. So when we actually had it on the shelf at the library I immediately picked it up and started reading it on my lunch break. And I couldn't put it down from there. It's not a terribly long novel, but it manages to have a big impact anyway. [...]

    10. Into the Blue was such a great book that I am legitimately contemplating moving to Hawaii and taking up surfing. Pene Henson paints such a vivid picture of the island, the Blue House, and the boys and girls who live there that I felt as though I'd met them before. And the water honestly was its own setting - I swear I could feel the salt spray against my skin.Ollie stole my heart right away. I felt his agony as he tried to grip tight and control every piece of his life that he was afraid of losi [...]

    11. Absolutely wonderful prose, Henson completely draws us in to the lives of Ollie and Tai, two very different suffers. Best friends who navigate their feelings for one another, they start hooking up during a surf tour with the conditions that it would only be temporary; yet it changes everything as Tai has been in love with Ollie for quite some time. Ollie's own discovery of his feelings as he gets pulled into a pro-surfer world is a heartwrenching journey. I particularly loved the setting of the [...]

    12. I LOVE TAI AND OLLIE SO MUCH AND THE BLUE HOUSE SQUAD!!! this was just hella cute. i feel like i should have read it in the summer, and got my surfing vibe onbut anyways, i just really want them all to be happy!

    13. This was such a feel good story. I flew through it in no time because I couldn't put it down. Beautifully written. It felt so summery and like I was right there in Hawaii. Ollie and Tai complemented each other so perfectly and I loved their family.

    14. 2.5. Hawaiian surfer BFFs gradually realise they want something more than friendship. Sigh. I'm bummed that I didn't like this more. The writing is proficient, and personally I want to thank them for getting all the Australian bits right (author is an Aussie), but the storytelling didn't gel for me. The Hawaiian bits were like a story written from looking at a postcard: I could see the images clearly enough, but I never got a sense of culture or the rhythms of the way people speak or the texture [...]

    15. I know next to nothing about surfing. I don’t live near an ocean, and my most recent exposure to surfing culture was watching Jonah Markowitz’s Shelter after it came out on DVD. (Watch it if you haven’t; it’s incredible.)But it wasn’t hard for me to get into this book, which touches on a lot of themes that resonate with me: friendship, chosen family, and figuring out what you want in life. Tai meets Ollie when they’re thirteen, and they soon become best friends held close by their sh [...]

    16. A Joyfully Jay review. 4.5 starsWhen we meet Tai and Ollie, they are already intertwined. It’s interesting here in that there are minimal flashbacks to their early friendship, yet their bond is strongly felt. Tai is the outgoing one and everyone knows him or wants to know him. He’s the central point in his friends’ lives, the friends who are his family and are everything to Tai. Ollie is way more reserved than Tai. He has few friends by choice and he doesn’t do well in crowds. He also ha [...]

    17. what a lovely book. sweet, soft, warm. with the most amazing characters. I love all the residents of the Blue House, especially Sunny and Hannah ❤️

    18. ~ 4.5 Stars ~ First, huge congratulations to Pene Henson for her Lambda Literary Award win in the Gay Romance category. A few of my favorite authors and other books that I loved last year were also finalists in this category, so there was some amazing competition! But, after reading Into the Blue, I can absolutely see why it was picked. It’s an incredibly gorgeous book, and so deserving of the award. Tai and Ollie are going to stick with me for a long time.Friends-to-lovers is one of my absolu [...]

    19. 4.5 stars. I loved this book. It's slow and sweet and subtle. It's two best friends who become more. It's a story about family you build yourself. The prose is beautiful and vivid. Lovely.

    20. 3.5 starsI really liked this book. It was a little hard to get into it. The writing was in 3rd person which is not my favorite but I thoroughly enjoyed this friends to lovers story.

    21. Into the Blue is the moving story of long time best friends Tai and Ollie, who grew up surfing the North Shore of Oahu together. This book is Henson's debut novel; it’s beautifully written and aches with the complexities of the protagonists’ stories. Their history and friendship is handled with great skill. There is never a moment when the forward progress of the story is bogged down by exposition that fills us in on the past. Instead we are treated into an inside view of their found family [...]

    22. Friends-to-lovers m/m surfing romance, written by my pal Pene, who sent me a copy so I could read it. I liked that Ollie's probably demisexual—or however he'd describe himself, which he doesn't—but because of that, I felt like the progression of his relationship with Tai needed more development. The way they came together made me wonder why it was happening when it was. I would have liked more of a catalyst to move them from friends to lovers, especially considering how particular Ollie is a [...]

    23. The characters in this were so sweet! I absolutely loved them, and I loved the subtle representation of ace and demisexual characters. The relationships in this - both the romance and the "found family" platonic relationships- are what drive the story. I also really enjoyed reading about the surfing and Hawaiian life that Tai, Ollie, and the other “Blue House” kids led. I know nothing about surf terminology, but I still completely enjoyed it. The only thing that kept me from giving this a hi [...]

    24. EDIT: I didn’t think I could love this story, these characters, any more than I did the first time around but - somehow I did. It felt like coming home when I stepped back into the story. Ollie and Tai still made me shake my head, smile, cry and laugh. Jaime, my gorgeous, artistic son I don’t remember if I had strong feelings for him the first time around but honestly. This child. I love him so much!! And of course I can’t forget Sunnie and Hannah. The voices of reason. The fantastic, amaz [...]

    25. An absolutely stunning debut novel, and perfect summer reading! Both the scenery and—even more so—the water were so beautifully described that you could feel Ollie and Tai's love for it through the author's words. If the classic friends-to-lovers storyline isn't enough to get your heart doing little giddy flips then the backdrop will certainly do it. I felt myself to be as much a member of the Blue House as any of the fantastically crafted characters living there. I'll admit that some of the [...]
