    1. 3.5 Stars ~ In Desert Heat, Hugh Wilkes and Rustam Balkhi meet when Hugh returns for his last tour of duty in Afghanistan, and Rustam is his assigned interpreter. They feel an instant connection and while away from the base, they realize their attraction is mutual and they act on that attraction. For Hugh, this is the first time that he is attracted not only physically but also emotionally and intellectually to another man. But, he is terrified of the consequences for both himself and Rustam sho [...]

    2. New review added for the audio book at The Novel Approach I enjoyed this story when I first read it last year. I am LOVING Joel Leslie’s work (just listened to ALL the Skyler Foxe mystery series in the last month), so I thought I’d give this a whirl. I was not disappointed. In Desert Heat, Hugh Wilkes and Rustam Balkhi meet when Hugh returns for his last tour of duty in Afghanistan, and Rustam is his assigned interpreter. They feel an instant connection and while away from the base, they real [...]

    3. Audiobook ReviewI had reviewed Native Tongue a while back for the blog, so when the author asked if we might like to have a copy of the series on audio I was certainly intrigued. I remember one of my biggest problems when I read Native Tongue was that I had not read Desert Heat, and felt like I had missed out on some of the chemistry between the two characters because of it. With this audio book, where both books are together as a set, I was able to experience their whole story and get a better [...]

    4. Two of my favourite books in one bundle - SCORE!!Here are my reviews of both books -Desert Heat - Originally part of the Unconditional Surrender bundle this cracking wee story is being let loose on the world on it's own.Wilkes, A British Army officer on his final tour of Afghan finds himself falling for his native interpreter, Balkhi.Months of inappropriate thoughts on both sides lead into a stolen night of passion but can they continue seeing each other without alerting the other guys on camp t [...]

    5. **Audiobook Review**I have to say I really enjoyed this double feature. The first book (Desert Heat) gave us the story of how the two men meet and get to know each other and the start of their relationship. It could've ended there with a Happy For Now ending. But I really liked that we got the continuation of the story (Native Tongue) and got to see the two men further their relationship as it leaves the military and enters normal day to day life. The story had a lovely plot and a few super sexy [...]

    6. Top notch M/M romance with expert narration!5 stars Superb narration enhances this romantic and steamy gay love story. What an impressive narrator! Joel Leslie is going on my list of my favorite narrators ever. The Birmingham, England, and Afghan accents of the main characters were perfect and sexy. Evidently, Birmingham is only 80 miles away from Liverpool and this accent sounded like he was Beatle, which I think is very sexy. He was also very good at pacing, conveying emotion, and love scenes. [...]

    7. I’m not sure of the timeline, but I’m assuming that given the degree to which these guys hid their feelings, it was a bit earlier in time. That combined with the location and the ethnicity of where they were stationed forced Balkhi and Hugh to hide their burgeoning love for one another for most of the time they’re stationed together. It’s only near the end of their tour that they were able to give in to their feelings and only once they moved back to England were they able to be out in p [...]

    8. REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCEStory 3 StarsNarration 2 StarsOverall 2.5 StarsIn Desert Heat we are introduced to Captain Hugh Wilkes who is on his final tour in Afghanistan. Hugh is deeply in the closet but when he meets his interpreter Rustam Balkhi he feels an immediate attraction and suddenly his life becomes more complicated. In ebook format this story is short at only 59 pages and for me it lacked any character development. They met, they stared longingly at each other and they took incre [...]

    9. Desert Heat & Native Tongue was read as a bundled story and I absolutely love both installments. Hugh Wilkes, a captain in the British Army, returns to Afghanistan for a final tour as they prepare to pull their forces out. Stationed at a forward operating base, he is paired with an Afghan translator, Rustam Balkhi. Hugh and Rustam connect instantly over talk of books, languages and friendship. The attraction between the two is instant but for more reasons than they can account for, both figh [...]

    10. A hot package of two fantastic short stories.Desert Heat. This is a fantastic short story. It is obviously well researched and intelligently written. It's an erotic romance told with the backdrop of life in the army in Afghanistan, highlighting the issues both of being gay in the military and cultural differences. Native Tongue.Hugh and Rustam's sexy story continues with the tasty twosome moving the action back to Blighty. How will they handle their relationship in a different country. Throw in H [...]

    11. This is a difficult book to rate, I love a good m/m romance, the characters felt very real and likeable, their concerns were valid, butSpoiler alert: nothing really happened. They were worried about anyone finding out they were sleeping together in Afghanistan - nobody did. They were worried about being seen out together in public -no one cared. One character was worried about coming out to his family and colleagues - they welcomed him and his boyfriend with open arms. I wanted more drama, more an [...]

    12. I wouldn't mind reading this bundle over and over again, which I did, multiple times. I read Desert Heat in the Unconditional Surrender anthology, then again on its own, and again in this bundle deal. I don't think I'll ever get tired of Captain Wilkes and Balkhi and just hope that Lucy finds it to give them their HEA for the rest of time (hint hint is there a 3rd coming out???) Both characters have challenges to overcome and they more than rise to the occasion for the love that they have for ea [...]

    13. Loved this duology of stories featuring the same characters. Wilkes and Balkhi are just fabulous and this story is brought alive by the great audio narration.

    14. Despite what the blurb implies, this is a low angst read focused more on sex than obstacles. Although mentioned in the blurb, I guess for dramatic effect, the story doesn't actually deal much with any conflict their jobs, cultures or religions may cause. In the first book, they don't get together until the end, and the second story picks up after their deployment together has ended, so Hugh really only has to do what he's been doing for years in regards to his career (hiding his sexuality from h [...]

    15. I read the 1st story some time back - but the 2nd one just couldn't hold my attention.Obviously if it's taken me 11+ weeks to even close this out as a "currently reading".

    16. Note: This audiobook was provided to me through Hearts on Fire Reviewsin exchange for an impartial review. Desert Heat: This segment of the story/audiobook was fairly short and deals primarily with the time in Afghanistan when Captain Hugh Wilkes meets his new translator, Rustam Balhaki. Attracted immediately, neither man makes a move until it’s so obvious that they are attracted, there’s no mistake. But having to meet on the sly and take risks is not what they want in a long-term relationsh [...]

    17. Maybe it was because the books were novellas and thus didn't have the space needed to develop a satisfying storyline, maybe it was the stilted dialogue or maybe it was the narrator, but I just couldn't come close to liking Desert Heat and Native Tongue. At times I wondered if the author was really into Public Service Announcements (this is your brain; this is your brain on drugs) because several scenes explained the reasoning behind why the MC's did what they did. Honestly, readers just need to [...]

    18. A steady 3.5 of a novel, It's a bargain on the British version of amazon today so after reading the reviews and blurb ,I purchased it.I really love when opposites or some opposing forces are attracted to one another under difficult circumstances. This ticks that box. I also like forbidden love- tick so well done to the novel. The the first short story is a slow burn with the main character Hugh battling with his attraction. The 2nd novel/Short story is very sex heavy with them being back in the U [...]

    19. This was not bad at all, it's just one of those books that's low on plot and heavy on smut, which isn't my thing. It wasn't completely without character development, though, so I'll give it 3 stars. I like that it had a Muslim MC because I enjoy non traditional MCs. I think what was frustrating was I really enjoyed the few scenes the characters spent outside of bed and I just wanted more of it and less sex, which just felt like filler.

    20. 2.5 starsTalk about insta-love! Added to the fact that I didn't enjoy the narrator's voice for Hugh, because he sounded like a much older man. However, Joel Leslie had a distinct voice for each character and I particularly liked his voice for Hugh's mother.

    21. The premise was very promising and interesting, but the execution fell short. The writing was stiff, lots of telling, no showing. I could not get into the book(s) at all.
