    1. I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest review.I have a love of words. Once when I was younger I tried to start a collection of words by writing new ones down in a notebook. It didn't work. It bored me and I gave up.However, this is to say that I have a great interest in words of all sorts, and I also have a great interest in learning things that I don't need to know, but give me facts that I can later tell to all of my friends. When I was scrolling through NetGalley and saw this boo [...]

    2. This is an easy book to read in brief pieces. I like learning about word histories but felt there could have been more. Some of the histories were too brief or repetitive. What I found most Intriguing was the various generations. I will read the book that informed the authors.

    3. What a fun read. Review to come shortly. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!+++++++++++++Check out my book blog for the awesome Gavin DeGraw song I reference, because, well, it's Gavin! ---> allthebookblognamesaretaken.blThank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. It's no surprise that I love words. I love learning about how words came to be, different definitions and how they've changed over generations, and so on.That's exactly what this book then presents. Starting in t [...]

    4. This book should have been right up my alley. However, a general disappointment permeated my reading of it. While I've never been a particularly happy subscriber to the generational notion. (I agree that people born in proximity share a certain amount of personality through shared history; I am less certain that it's a cut and dry 80 year cycle of 20 year groups. I feel there must be a certain amount of fluidity and difference between members of the same age group. But that's a tangent to my iss [...]

    5. I had such high hopes for this book! As a linguistics minor in college and a nerd when it comes to all things generationally categorized, I was so happy when I received this book as a gift from my thoughtful husband! It starts off great, but once you get into the "modern" generations - G.I Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials - that's where it sours. The most annoying thing about the book is his rampant generalizations about the living generations. G.I.s are painted in this ridiculously angelic light, [...]

    6. I was expecting a fairly basic collection of words from different generations which helped to define those generations. This book provided so much more than that. As explained in the beginning, the structure of the generations is based on research by Strauss and Howe on generational cycles and the types of generations that have historically preceded and followed each other. By use of this general guideline, Metcalf presents a collection of words with not simply a bit of history about each word b [...]

    7. So, I didn't really enjoy this as much as I thought I would. It was okay. It was fun reading up on where some of these common words got their start, but it turns out that it got to be a bit monotonous. If you already know what the word means then knowing when it was first used and examples is, for me at least, only borderline interesting. I will say it was neat seeing how some words changed and morphed their meanings slightly over time. I'm giving this a 3 star rating because of how engaged I fe [...]

    8. *ARC from NetGalley*The author takes us through generations and introduces us to words that made up those generations. I love how we are taken through different generations and introduced to words that have characterize and described those generations. I find it fun to know the history of words and how they and their definition have came to be. I thought the author did a wonderful job and I liked at the end how he gave us a peek into the future generation might end up doing. I found this book to [...]

    9. A great book for the armchair etymologist. Its main shortcoming is that it is short on stories and sometimes overabundant on historical usage examples. Check out my review at copyediting/book-revie.

    10. Very entertaining and informative. Not meant to be a comprehensive study of slang words for each generation Metcalf chose some of the more enduring words in which to give a history.Would like to own.

    11. What a delightful book. This made the English teacher and linguist in me really happy. Highly recommend to everyone but especially those interested in word play.

    12. Another disappearing review. said they sent this problem yo their technical department over two months ago, but I have heard nothing.

    13. As a word aficionado with a B.S. in English Writing, I loved thid short but informative book! It's interesting that the author decided to sort the words by generation. Definitely worth reading!

    14. Very interesting - more from a historical "generations" aspect than "word origins". Short, entertaining, and actually quite educational.

    15. An interesting book on the sayings and slang words over the generations.I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest, unbiased review.
