    1. (Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Entangled Publishing, LLC and NetGalley.)“They’re killing the pets.”This was a good sequel, and the stakes rose even higher.Ella really took charge in this book; even though she was still a bit naïve, and still didn’t come up with the best plans, she knew what she wanted and really went for it, even if it meant putting herself in danger to achieve what she wanted.“I need to get back,” I sai [...]

    2. “Morning was just an idea that night was considering, a blush colored dream.”Book Title: TarnishedAuthor: Kate Jarvik BirchSeries: Perfected #2 Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian-ish, Sci-fi-ishPublisher: Entangled TeenSource: Netgalley Arc☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾☆☼☾Why I picked that quote: The author has a lot of poignant excerpts like this one throughout the book, and this one is my favorite. Such a beautiful way to explain the pre-daw [...]

    3. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.I . . . liked Tarnished. I was so excited to dive into this one, but I ended up not liking it quite as much as I wished. The good, though? Missy and Ella had an interesting friendship and it was nice seeing how it developed. They seemed pretty different in the beginning, but their similarities became clearer as the book progressed. They had the same struggle and the same hopes for freedom. That helped them develop a bond. I did lik [...]

    4. Read all my reviews on urlphantomhiveoklikes After reading Perfected last year I immediately added the sequel to my wishlist on GoodReads. Quite unlike my TBR, my wishlist only holds a dozen or so books, making it quite special. I was very looking forward to this book.Ella now is in Canada, where keeping girls as pets is - luckily - not allowed. But she's not happy, and from here the story goes downhill.I finished my review of Perfected saying that it felt like reading Wither but making more sen [...]

    5. PERFECTED was an interesting book, but TARNISHED definitely stepped the series up another level.Ella tended to annoy me in PERFECTED, but TARNISHED brought her out of her 'pet' shell. She goes from meek to fierce and her loyalty to those she cares about shines through in just about every situation. She still has a few sheltered girl moments, but when she catches up to the game, she totally redeems herself in my eyes. The romance between Ella and Penn. It's missing the spark I would expect to feel [...]

    6. Once I picked it up, I didn't want to put this book down. Perfected was a compelling and creepy story, even though I could see some things coming way before Ella realized them. Tarnished is just as - if not more so - creepy. Ella and Penn were separated at the end of book 1 by police officers at the U.S./Canada border, and this book begins one week later with Ella stuck in a Canadian refugee centre. This book was more action packed than the first one with plenty of twists and turns along the way [...]

    7. I have been provided an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Entangled Teen. All the opinions are my own. I do not know how to rate this book. On one hand, there are definite plot improvements comparing to "Perfected", and I found myself curious about what would happen next at times but for the life of me, I could not understand why any of the characters were behaving the way they were. Let me provide you with an example of what I mean. Quote incoming.(view spoiler)["We can't just let them take h [...]

    8. Tarnished picks up shortly after Perfect ends. Ella was able to successfully make it over the Canadian border but unfortunately Penn wasn't as lucky. While she's loathing the safe house for pets that she's in, Penn's back under the clutches of his father/her owner. Unable to be away from Penn, Ella breaks out of her "prison" where she meets up with another pet from the U.S. The two of them cross the border back to the states in order for Ella to be reunited with her love. However, their journey [...]

    9. This book is a solid 4.5 stars.Warning: This review may contain slight spoilers. This book took me a week to read. But it doesn’t have anything to do with the book itself. It was because of my schedule and me feeling overwhelmed by starting about 4/5 books in one day because my attention span fluttered away. There are so many things to say about the book but first off, character development.Like, I was absolutely amazed. First off, Ella is still naive in the beginning of the book, but not as nai [...]

    10. Five stars are not enough for TARNISHED.TARNISHED is simply outstanding! This had to be said right away. I’m not sure whether someone who hasn’t read the first book of this series, Perfected, will be able to easily follow, because TARNISHED continues exactly where PERFECTED left off. However, TARNISHED is so good, I believe that readers should make an effort to read TARNISHED, or better yet read PERFECTED before. To cut a long story short: the “pets”, are genetically engineered girls, wh [...]

    11. Read this review and more on my blog.I received a free copy of Tarnished for my honest opinion. Is it sad that this isn't the first book that i have read second or third book first? Some books are written in a way that even if it is the second or third book in a series, you do not need to have read the previous books it still makes sense. Unfortunately Tarnished was not one of those books. Right from the start I was playing catch-up on what was happening, and even after finishing reading Tarnished [...]

    12. This review of “Tarnished” is going to be short, because when I requested it I neglected to notice that it was the second book in a series. I’ll review it based on the plot and writing, but as a reader you should begin with the first book ("Perfected") to save yourself the same confusion I brought upon myself. The premise is disturbing while also being compelling. As soon as I saw that it included the concept of humans being kept as pets, I knew it would be a good dystopian plot. I am excit [...]

    13. The end of the first book to this series made me instantly want to read this book and that's exactly what I did. This book was a lot more a fast paced which I liked. I loved the relationship she built with the people in this book. It made her seem so strong, unlike the pet she was made out to be. It took a little bit for things to get going, but that's what made me want to read it even more. This book is so wonderful, I cannot wait for the next one to come out. You thought the first one was good [...]

    14. Brilliant! INITIAL THOUGHTSAfter reading and thoroughly enjoying Perfected I was really looking forward to reading Tarnished. the only slight worry I had was that sometime the second book in a series doesn't quite live up to the first!MY REVIEWSo as I said at the very beginning of the post about the covers for this book series so far you already know I love the covers! The dress featured on the cover is Tarnish is definitely a statement dress and certainly catches your eye! The dress and it's co [...]

    15. This and other reviews can be found at Yellow, Green, and Read All OverNote: I received a digital ARC of this novel from Entangled Teen and NetGalleyWhen we last left Ella, having realized that the perfect life she was bred for was anything but, she escaped captivity and had managed to cross the border into Canada, where asylum is offered to human "pets" such as herself. Excellent.right? Well not so much. As with everything else in Ella's life, there's a caveat to her freedom. In the process of [...]

    16. It's not that I don't like the book it's the whole human pet thing, still.I did like the direction this book took and the ending was great. I like that Penn stood by Ella and I like their relationship. I love the relationship that Ella and Missy have throughout this book (that was so good) I will read the next book too because I have to know how this story wraps up. I SO wish the Congressmen will pay for all that takes place and the things I am sure he knows about going on in the human kennels.

    17. At A Glance An exciting sequel but some stupid actions brought it down. The Good Tarnished was a great sequel to Perfected.  Perfected introduced us to the world and Ella's life as a pet, but Tarnished  pumps up the action and suspense. Ella is on the run from her horrible owner but she can't resist going back for Penn, the only boy who gets the she is not just a pet, she is a thinking and feeling human being.Ella grows so much in this book. She is still naïve in a lot of ways but her jou [...]

    18. "I had no idea what sort of lives normal people lived, but I wanted to know."The GoodThis one is even better than the first. What drew me to Perfected was the outrageousness of owning a human as a pet. In this second installment, things get so much worse than simply owning a human being (and that was bad enough?!?!). This is one of those series that make me think the entire time I'm reading it. I can't help but go over in my head and digest the information of what is considered acceptable by peo [...]

    19. Tarnished is the second book in the Perfected series by Kate Jarvik Birch and I have to say, I think I enjoyed this one a bit more than the first book. Where book one established the back story and the basis for the situations Ella faces in this book, this one felt a bit different. Tarnished has quite a bit of action, some swoony bits, and progress within the story. I loved that we got to learn a bit more about the kennels and the rebel group.Ella has definitely changed since she moved in with t [...]

    20. I'm still not over that I felt empty, in a good way, at the end of Tarnished. I mean, it couldn't end like that! Tell me there's a third book. Please.First of all, Tarnished, with its character development and pacing, it is no doubt, much better than Perfected. I was mostly reading with my mouth gaping and furrowed brows with all the things that were happening - the pets turning up dead, the black market and others. But I wasn't angry. I didn't hate this new look. If anything, it strengthened me. [...]

    21. I was given an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! I loved this sequel! About halfway through it get so intensely exciting that you just can’t put it down. It starts off with Ella formulating a plan to escape from her…well, escape. Having fled to Canada, she finds herself escaping the people trying to help her. She very quickly runs into an old frenemy and together they make their way back to the United States. It takes a lot of time, trouble and sacrifice, b [...]

    22. Ella is free. Sort of. She’s stuck in a refugee center in Canada, which feels like just another prison to her. So she escapes and with the help of Missy and uses the black market to get back to her old home and Penn, the boy she loves.Tarnished is the second book in the Perfected series and it’s every bit as riveting as the first, but in a different way. The truth behind the treatment of pets is exposed, and Ella’s innocence and naivete are stripped away for good. She faces the ugly truth [...]

    23. Although I have not read the first book in the Perfected series, I could pick this one up and not be lost. Took me a few minutes to get acquainted with where we were in the story and why we were there, but Kate Jarvik Birch does a very good job of catching you up quickly.I have to say that this story was very interesting in itself. I tried to put myself in the story several times and each time I was so glad that I was not Ella. I would hate to be in her position and trying to help save others as [...]

    24. 4 ½ ★After reading and really enjoying the first book “Perfected” I was really excited to be offered the second book.I was curious to see where it would go from there for Ella. It was not what I expected, I didn’t expect her to go back to the States after all she went through to make it to Canada. But after being separated from Penn at the border it was the only thing she could think of.Much like the last book I hardly could put the book down. It was captivating interesting and disturbi [...]

    25. Ella grows into a stronger character in #2 of this trilogy (?), though unfortunately she still doesn't have a lot of skills working for her in her now-fugitive life.Pros: The book is pretty action-packed, and Birch is an able writer -- no weird verb usage or overly flowery descriptions or other writing deficiencies that you often see in books. All our protagonists are still likable. Also, to some extent, attempts were made to answer the questions that I had from book #1.However, "shoot" was used [...]
