There was a lot of content about sleep in general, maybe a bit too much, which made me skim some of it and wish I had picked up the abridged version. The reason for rating this as 4 stars is the age of the book, so that the contents are not current. But it is still valid including the repeated warning never to drive drowsy.

I do know that my life will be better because of this book. The Promise of Sleep should be required reading for everyone.

    25. Way more information about sleep than the layperson needs, but what was parseable I found pretty helpful, particularly the chart in the back for paying down sleep debt. This would be best read after consulting other books about sleep - this really is a reference for people who have tried just about everything else to increase the quality of their sleep, not for people just starting out on improving their sleep quality and length.


    26. Was considering this an option for my health psychology students to read. It is well written and very thorough. I wish it had been a little shorter in parts. Dr. Dement is very passionate about a few very good points: 1) driving drowsy is dangerous, 2) most medical doctors and the general public are uninformed about sleep disorders and sleep debt and the impacts they can have on health, and 3) getting a good night's sleep should be a bigger priority than most people make it.

The book also offers some helpful practical advice regarding reducing sleep debt and getting healthy sleep. I would have enjoyed this book more if Dr. Dement would give insight into the molecular biology and biochemistry of sleep. Barring this quip, the book is definitely worth a read, especially for people who often feel tired.

Now I know what I need to do help with sleep, though I'm still not implementing most stuff yet(my self-discipline hasn't been sufficiently increased yet I guess). It is a little long, but it seems like you could skip around the book to what interests you and not miss much. I want to get a copy for myself to use as a reference.

You do spend one third of your life sleeping so it's worth finding out a little about it.The elucidation of the benefits and costs of lack of sleep, and concepts like sleep debt, are really eye-opening.That's the first half of the book. If it ended there, I would give it five stars. The second half of the book was all about various sleep disorders, which while fascinating at first, did drag on for a long time.
