    3. Some good take-aways, but basic understanding can be had from watching the documentary made, or lectures done by Buettner. I'm glad that wild greens were recognized for their nutritional significance, and raw forms of milk, as well as lifestyle differences (naps, family style dining, steady movement, etc), but wish more focus would have been put on the gut microbe difference in people around the world due to diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Written by a "National Geographic" staffer, this brief book examines the diets of five very long-lived populations from Sardinia, Greece, Okinawa, and Central American and U.S. Seventh Day Adventists, all of whom eat primarily plant-based diets with sparing amounts of meat/animal protein, dairy products, and sweets. Buettner suggests that part of their longevity is based on their vegan/vegetarian diets. While the conclusion appears sound, the book is marred by speculation and unsubstantiated ass [...]

    7. In addition to the research and justification for the eating habits espoused by this book, there is a helpful list of foods that are healthy and a (very short) list of foods never to eat. Unfortunately, this book - like so many diet books - succumbs to the temptation to use some fairly esoteric ingredients, which removes it from the reality of most of our cooking days.

    8. Much more of a diet/health book than the first Blue Zones book. I found this one to be a bit peachier than the older Blue Zones book, but that is to be expected in a health book. Generally, most of the info here is also in the first book with the exception of the recipes - which I haven't tried yet :)Basically: Eat mostly vegetarian (Beans4LYFE!), move in a natural way throughout your day, surround yourself with good people, and find a purpose in life.

    9. A good reminder of all the commonsense lifestyle choices that are also outlined in all I have ever read about the Mediterranean Diet. No fads, no crash diets. Just simple reminders of living a balanced life and eating sensibly.

    11. As others have said, not a lot of new info for people who are already interested in nutrition and health - stay active, eat veggies, lower your stress and surround yourself with friends. However, I really enjoyed the insights into other cultures and appreciated the highly specific and practical suggestions for getting healthier.

However, dry and lackluster the writing, It is interesting to read the analyzed data from centarians through out the world and what they eat and compare that to the latest trends in dietary health today (like paleo, keto, veganism, etc).     16. Interesting and informative. My favourite parts were the first section about the blue zone diets, and the last two about creating your own. I'm not really into health or dieting - I try to eat right, de-stress and exercise, but I read this mostly just because I like good food. Of course, the majority of the book is focused on what we eat, although there were parts on natural exercises, faith and social support.     18. Awesome book! Totally made me rethink the value of a mostly vegetarian diet. Getting enough protein is important, but it doesn't always have to be from muscle meats. With all the high-protein literature that has been published recently (paleo and ketogenic) it's easy to get caught up in feeling obligated to eat more meat.     20. Full of InfoIf living as long as possible and having quality of life is your goal, this book is a great intro into how to begin working towards that end. It opens with an interesting survey of the 5 Blue Zones people, their diets, and lifestyles, and how teams have successfully implemented community wide health changes. The book closes with creating your own Blue Zone lifestyle and recipes adapted to the American kitchen.

    21. Offered some new information, some old. Somewhat a motivational book on healthy habits. The main health approach shared in this book is to create an environment that encourages healthy practices. I didn't fully agree with the (political) ideas in this book, but as an anthropology and as a health guide book it was interesting enough. As far as the suggestions go, I'll take some and leave some. May be worth the read if you want to equip yourself with more info in making healthy choices.

    22. This is a great book. The messages here are smart: live a wholesome life, stay active and eat right. And the book provides examples of how people have done that and how we all can too. It's a shame that the Blue Zones projects haven't taken off more and that culure is so hard to change. If more people followed this advice and changed our environments to promite better health, our society would be way better off.

    23. This was a really quick read for me. I was interested in the diet and lifestyles of the people in the actual blue zones, the locations around the world where people live the longest. I did not find the information about the US cities where they have adopted some of these lessons as interesting. Nothing groundbreaking for someone who is already trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

Was prompted to read this book when I saw the author, Dan Buettner on an HBO documentary with Carl Reiner about aging titled, "If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast".Lots of inspirational information. Was happy to read that my town is a Blue Zone Community.Must read if you want to live a long healthy life.

    25. A good follow-up to the book I read Hard-Wired for Fitness. It's not so much about not having the willpower to change our unhealthy habits. It's about the environment around us-whether it's conducive to healthy changes or not. We as individuals in our community have to work together to make our community more healthy. We can make a blue zone in our home though and that's where we can start.

Helpful look at how real diet change comes as part of a holistic look and updating of one's lifestyle and, in contrast to a lot of the individual diet fixes, is best viewed in accordance with a community change. Have not tried the recipes yet, but it's just a nice reminder that a lot of what I thought is good for us is rooted in research.
