    1. Blah. So glad to be done with this one. I only finished it because I wanted to see what would happen. It was by an Irish writerabout a woman who disappears and various people who are trying to find herI didn't particularly like the characters--most of them didn't seem to have any morals--and in fact I didn't feel as if I really got to understand them at any rate. The writing was just not very strong. This novel is a classic example of telling rather than showing. And even though I love music, the [...]

    2. Anna McPartlin is an author I can count on to give me what I want, characters I can love with real problems, stories that can be sad and aren't always perfect, but some humor and laughter along the ride. I have read her other books and have loved them all, consuming them quickly even when there were things I told myself I'd get done before I continued. Alexandra Gone is no exception. Jane cares for everyone except herself, Elle straddles the line between being ridiculously selfish and having emo [...]

    3. Alexandra, Goneby Anna McPartlin opens with the disappearance of Alexandra one afternoon in Dublin. The reader knows little about her but witnesses her disappearance and the subsequent devastation of her husband, Tom, and her family as they desperately hold out hope that she will be found healthy and safe. While looking for Alexandra, Tom has a chance meeting in a broken elevator with Leslie, Elle and Elle's sister, Jane. The four soon band together in the search for Alexandra and through that p [...]

    4. I really liked this book. The title would suggest that it is about Alexandra, and it is to an extent. But the real story involves the other characters and what they go through while trying to find Alexandra. Really the character Alexandra is just a catalyst to pull all of the other characters together. Not to say that Alexandra isn't part of the plot, because the entire book revolves around finding her, but she's not part of the main stories. This book reminded me a bit of a Maeve Binchy novel. [...]

A partir [...]

    6. Once Jane and Alexandra were inseparable – sharing adventures, secrets and big dreams for the future. But when Jane got pregnant at seventeen, they drifted apart. Seventeen years later, Jane discovers Alexandra has disappeared and she sets about helping Alexandra’s broken-hearted husband, Tom, to find his wife. But in searching for Alexandra Jane is about to confront some big questions about herself. Like, what happened to the high-spirited seventeen-year-old she once was? What will happen i [...]

    9. I enjoyed a number of the characters in this book. I found it slow moving however and struggled to get back to it on a couple of occasions. I found the writing style clear and consistent and I did like the music references scattered throughout. The simplicity of both the characters and the plot was nice and there were no dramatic inconsistencies but this also made it feel a bit slow in places as there was a "well thats no surprise" feeling about some of the revelations.Overall I would recommend t [...]

    10. Was soll ich sagen?

    11. Time taken to read - 1 dayPages - 355Publisher - PenguinBlurb from LETTING GO FOR GOOD . . .Once, Jane Moore and Alexandra Walsh were inseparable, sharing secrets and stolen candy, plotting their futures together. But when Jane became pregnant at seventeen, they drifted slowly apart. Jane has spent the years since raising her son, now seventeen himself, on her own, running a gallery, managing her sister’s art career, and looking after their volatile mother—all the while trying not to resent [...]

Alexandra, Gone by Anna McPartlinPublished by Downtown Press (Division of Simon & Schuster)ISBN 978-1-4391-2333-1At the request of Gallery & Pocket Books, a PB copy was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion. Synopsis (from back of book): Once, Jane Moore and Alexandra Walsh were inseparable, sharing secrets and stolen candy, plotting their futures together. But when Jane became pregnant at seventeen, they drifted slowly apart. Jane has spent the years since raising her son, now s [...]

    13. This was very easy to get immersed in and with a whole mix of characters to get to know and plots I couldn't put it down once started.Though a lot of it was kinda predictable and you knew that certain people would end up together but at times like this it's the story of how they get there that holds it all together.Toms wife Alexandra goes missing and the story is told over the next year.I really had no idea what way the plot would go, would she turn up,would she stay hidden forever or would she [...]

    14. From my blog[return][return]Alexandra, Gone is a brilliantly stunning novel that showcases the masterful storytelling of author Anna McPartlin where readers learn just enough about the key cast to have their interest piqued. The novel begins with Alexandra's narrative on 21 June 2007 in Dublin where she left a note for her husband Tom to head to the grocery when he returned home from work and said she would be out for a brief time while having drinks with her friend Sherri. Alexandra departed th [...]

    15. Anna McPartlin is a new author for me. This novel has been on my TBR stack for a very long time. I found it to be slow-moving even though a couple of the characters were interesting. But most of them weren't and I didn't like them very much. Basically I felt some of them just needed to get their act together and grow up.The plot centers around one year from the time Alexandra goes missing and the characters who are searching for her. One thing I liked was the humor which helped to keep it light [...]

    16. Alexandra,Gone written by Anna McPartlin takes place in a Dublin suburb and is about how two families cope with the disappearance of Alexandra who one day just disappears. Of course her husband Tom is the automatic suspect but as the story progress's you realize that this is not the case. This contemporary story jumps from character to character which makes the story flow together. The story is sad and at the same time humorous. The main character Jane (who was a childhood friend of Alexandra's) [...]

    17. (Note: I read the edition titled The One I Love. It also seems to be available as So What If I'm Broken)Hurrah! What a breath of fresh air this book was. It was a great combination of mystery, romance and humour with a couple of dysfunctional families thrown in to keep the pace moving. I found there were so many characters you could relate to in some way, whether it is Rose's 'tell it like it is' attitude, Leslie's fierce independence/ hiding from the world, Elle's mishaps, Jane's mothering inst [...]

    20. I loved Alexandra, Gone. Reading the blurb, I had expected the book to be dark and with a greater focus on forensics because of Alexandra's disappearance. Instead, I entered this world of Jane, her sister Elle, their friend Leslie, their new friend Tom, and the rest of Jane's off-kilter family. Getting to know these people, what and who they love, their vulnerabilities and hopes, and their stories and strengths was full of laughs and surprises. In Jane, Elle, and Leslie of Alexandra, Gone, Anna M [...]

    22. The One I Love is a story about a missing girl, Alexandra, and people who find each other due to her disappearance. It was an enjoyanble read, would give it 3.5 stars. Readers are introduced to several lives combined together and affecting one another. We get to know their backgrounds and things that have shaped them. For me, there were so many characters. I did enjoy getting to know them. I would have been irritated if we wouldn´t have gotten the solution to the disappearance. What did bother [...]

    23. This is the first book I have read by Anna McPartlin and I am now keen to read more by her. This was such a good story. Alexandra is indeed gone, disappeared one afternoon never to be seen again and the story is about the people who come together - accidentally, to try to help find her. Her husband Tom has never stopped looking for her and with the help of her oldest childhood friend and others, a new search unfolds as does the complex story of interwoven lives of real people. Despite the subjec [...]

    24. After taking a break from reading, this book was the perfect book to start me off on my reading adventure again. The title would suggest that it is about Alexandra, and it is to an extent. 25. I really liked the story and the characters here, but it lost a star for school-girlish writing which made it hard to get into. The story is set in Ireland and is about a young woman who goes missing one day, and her husband and estranged best friend, and their family and friends, who in trying to find her find life, love and themselves. There are some fairly dark parts about death, loss, mental illness, alcoholism and betrayal, but also some very funny bits. Songs by Jack Lukeman who is a real s [...]

    26. I just adored Pack Up the Moon and thought McPartlin couldn't top that one. Well, she did! The characters have depth and make you care that Alexandra is missing. You get to know her through the interactions of Jane, Leslie, Elle and Tom. McPartlin shines with her smart and funny dialogue and that earns extra points with me as a reader. There are a lot of emotional roller coasters hereand there are points at which you might be driven to tears, but the ending is worth it. I can't wait for her next [...]

    27. This book has also been published as "The One I Love".I thought the characters were very human. We're not all perfect, how we all react to the loss of a loved one varies from person to person and this story reflects that.Although it develops as a sad story with death, illness and disappointments in love, the story ends on a lighter, happier note on how we can forge friendships through sorrow, that it is never too late to make a fresh start. When I started reading this I didn't expect to enjoy it, [...]

    28. This book was a little hard for me to get into. There was something about the writing that made me have to struggle with it at first, and then once I did, it was easier to read. This was a deep book--it's definitely not something you'd want to read if you were looking for a happy, uplifting or fluffy book. But it was definitely interesting. A lot of issues were brought up--teenage pregnancy, missing people, suicide, cancer, mental illness. The way the characters were all integrated took a little [...]

    29. Ha! I absolutely loved this novel. I could see a bit of myself in several of these characters. Now, that might mean I'm a bit "mad" but there's a little bit of madness in all of us. Right? I mean, only God knows where the road will lead us and who it leads us to, but there is most certainly a reason for everything! These witty, silly, insane, harsh, caring, intelligent, talented, interesting, intriguing, full of life, fearing life, giving, amazing, mean, strong, fun, awesome women caught my atte [...]

    30. This book, seemingly about a missing woman, is so much more than that. It looks at the dynamics between strangers, friends, siblings and parents. Through a common goal of finding Alexandra, a group of people all come together and, in turn, find themselves. The authors portrays life in a realistic, non-idealistic, beautiful and heartbreaking way. The path to discovering one's self and leading a fulfilling life is not easy, and the author manages to portray the complexity in an eloquent manner tha [...]
