    1. Quite cute and imaginative. Brief, with only a sentence or so per page making it a good choice for a toddler storytime. A boy goes out to play in his little pool to discover a whale lying on top of it. He tries to convince the whale to leave, but, then the boy figures out a way to enjoy the pool with the whale in it. The books wraps up with the boy heading off for a nap only to find a bear in his bed. I just love Joyce Wan's illustrations. Her books make excellent toddler board books, just the r [...]

    2. Update: I just read this aloud to my 7th graders, and they LOVED it! They thought it was really funny. (view spoiler)[ We are all waiting for a sequel based on the last page! (hide spoiler)]Cute story. I like the perseverance of the little boy trying to get the whale out of his pool. Some humorous moments. Ending was fun.

    3. I plan on using this book for my Toddler Time, I think they would get a kick out of a whale in a swimming pool. I think this book would also make a great read aloud book for preschool-kindergarten aged children.

    4. Joyce Wan solves the complex problem of getting a whale out of your swimming pool; you don't. She teaches compromise and understanding in an amusing way.Simple art to make you smile and take notice. Wonderful story especially for nap time.Published by Farrar, Strauss Giroux.

    5. Sometimes you got to suck it up buttercup and take the good with the bad. Or maybe find good in every weird situation.

    6. My mom read this book to me while I was at the library and she loved it! The illustrations are really cute and the story is simple, but funny. A whale has taken over a child's kiddie pool and the mother doesn't even notice. A great board book that I, as a 2 year old, didn't quite get, but would be funny as I got older.

    7. Definitely going to use this in a future storytime. It's a little silly but there are some awesome things in it that will help with interacting with the preschoolers. There's counting and silly suggestions and little funny things tucked in on the pages that, while small, are still large enough that most of the group will be able to see (for examplee shark fin in the pool next door.)

    8. Very simple text and art which makes for a good read for some of the youngest readers. The art really reminds me of Hello Kitty - simple with bright colors. I did not think the text was very strong but that could be the point.

    9. A whale in your swimming pool? It's just the beginning of silly fun when the boy in this book figures out how to get the whale out of his pool. Colorful, simple illustrations are great.

    10. It is a cute easy book to read to a group, but I feel like the ending is just a little too abrupt for most younger readers. They just don't get how funny it actually is.

    11. SUMMARY: A little boy goes outside to swim in his wading pool only to find a whale has taken over. The boy tries everything to remove the whale including reasoning, begging, bribing and even using a crane to lift the whale out. Nothing works. The boy is at the end of his patience when he thinks of a solution that will make everyone happyLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations appear to be digitally rendered. They are simple for younger readers with chunky lines and are very colorfulE GOOD: This story has [...]

    12. A little boy is thwarted in his plans to enjoy the pool in his yard. After all, there isn't much room for him in the pool since a whale is enjoying its waters. The whale is simply not interested in going anywhere. After trying all sorts of strategies, from the simplest to the most elaborate involving construction equipment, the youngster comes up with a solution that works out well for both whale and boy. Some youngsters will be highly amused by this ridiculous dilemma and the bright illustratio [...]

    13. A boy goes to swim in his kiddie pool and there is a giant whale in it. He tries various ways to get him out, such as luring him with a fish, bulldozing him, and talking up the neighbors larger pool, but the whale never budges, or speaks for that matter. Just smiles back at the boy. Just when the boy is about to give up the whale does the only thing it actually does in the whole book, it blows water out of its blowhole. The boy then grabs his inner tube and gets his water fix that way and is con [...]

    14. The last thing you want to find in your swimming pool on the hottest day of the summer is a massive whale not willing to share it with you!Funny and sweet, this book is the type you'll need to read to your little ones several times in a row. We had fun thinking in many ways to make the whale move out of the pool!A warm read for this cold weatherAge range: 2 to 6 years oldCheck out more children's book reviews in my Reviews in Chalk Blog!

    15. Another ridiculously cute book. The writing wasn't as smooth, as it was mostly disjointed dialogue, but I could see fans of Elephant and Piggy enjoying this book, due to the sparse text and minimal drawing style. The kids loved this book as well and laughed all the way through. My favorite was when the boy tries to lift the whale out of his wading pool with a crane, and one kid shouted "How did he get that crane it costs $700 he couldn't afford it!!" since, you know, that's the real question whe [...]

    16. This book may not explain HOW a giant WHALE ended up in the little boy's swimming pool, or why the boy's mother seems less than freaked out that such an extraordinary event has occurred, but it doesn't need to -- it's still extremely funny! Kids will have a lot of fun coming up with different ideas for how to get the whale out of the pool but will any of them actually prove successful? The twist ending made this book even more of a fun read -- and sets things up nicely for a sequel (or for kids [...]

    17. As summer approaches and the weather warms up, you may find yourself filling the kiddy pool and who knows, maybe you too will find an unexpected guest in it one morning. What you would do if you found a whale in your pool one day? Asking your child "What would you do?" questions after you read a book together helps your child relate story context to real life situations, encourages a problem solving mindset, and is a great way to build reading comprehension.
