Van Lente was raised by a mystery loving mother who preferred Dorothy Sayers to Agatha Christie, but we won t hold that against her and a wisecracking Woody Allen lookalike scientist father in what appears to be some kind of genetic experiment to write his first novel, TEN DEAD COMEDIANS, even though neither parent nor the son himself would know it for many years Van Lente spent his time between birth and authoring Ten Dead Comedians becoming the 1 New York Times best selling writer of graphic novels like Cowboys Aliens the basis of the feature film , Odd is on Our Side with Dean R Koontz, and the gorily funny Marvel Zombies series He did some other things too, but they hardly seem worth mentioning.

    1. There sure are plenty of ‘rental issues in the Valiant universe these days! Quantum and Woody’s supposedly dead dad is coming back to haunt them; Bloodshot’s whole motivation is finding out his origins; and in Archer & Armstrong, Archer’s purpose in the series now is to find out who his biological parents were.Archer’s quest takes him and Armstrong to the Church of Retrology in Hollywood (nothing at all like Scientology – the Retrologists are all about conning gullible celebritie [...]

    2. For the past few weeks I've been doing this project of reading the current Valiant books that started up a few years ago. Overall I've enjoyed it a great deal. it's kind of the best of both worlds of indie books and mainstream superhero books. It's a shared universe, with crossovers and a larger overall plot. But it's not more than 7 or 8 titles going on at once, and they all have their own feel. Some aren't as great as others but they're all at least good and worth a look. I wanted to review th [...]

    3. A journey into the collective unconscious via celebrity culture, which opens with Elvis as the Fisher King before introducing a Jim Morrison/L Ron Hubbard composite. The worst thing is, it makes a worrying amount of sense.

    4. It took me six volumes, but I finally worked out who the Archer & Armstrong Marvel parallels are. They're a bit more of a mesh together than a straight mirror, but I'm really ashamed of myself for not realising earlier that they're Hercules and Amadeus Cho. They're even written by Fred Van Lente, of all people. I am a stupid.Anyway, back to business. This volume's so much fun. Archer & Armstrong track Archer's real parents to the Lizard King's hotel full of long-dead celebrities, and fig [...]

    5. This book contains one of the most epic trolls in the history of comics, just very well played. Archer and Armstrong are facing down a Scientology clone led by Jim Morrison (the Lizard King), as they try to prevent him from accessing the Wheel of Atem and using it on the world. Using Hotel California as a focus point, and with a number of dead celebrities, the story manages to spin wheels within wheels, with action and humor in equal measure. There are a couple of segments that seem random, but [...]

    6. The VH-E Archer & Armstrong has always straddled the line between urban folklore and satire and it's often wobbled over a bit too far into the ridiculous side of things with its various Sects. "American Wasteland" revisits that balance in a Hotel (in) California and it's wildly wonderful. There's a wonderful balance between a history of Americana, the story of the Sect, and the latest threat to Archer, Armstrong, and the universe and it's enlightening, hilarious, and serious all at the same [...]

    7. Archer and Armstrong would have made the perfect HBO animated show in the 90s. There's an almost South Park-esque quality to the celebrity-spoofing that happens in this volume. Volume six is Van Lente's swan song to the series, and he wraps it up in an equally ridiculous fashion to how it began. Some amazing things happen here, creating an appropriately cyclical nature to Van Lente's narrative. I feel like revealing anything would be too much of a spoiler, so needless to say, if you've made it t [...]

    8. I love Archer and Armstrong. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything that I have read from Valiant, their publisher. Volume 6, American Wasteland is no exception. I thought that the story was funny, and exciting. The artwork was not hard on the eyes. I loved all the dead musicians. It was a fun, great read. If you want to read fun comic books then try anything from Valiant. I have not been disappointed yet.

    9. This is probably my last Archer & Armstrong. The comedy sporadic but the story is just unsatisfying to me now.

    10. I thought this was even cuter than some of the previous ones. The pop culture and somewhat stale time travel–paradox jokes all worked well. Seems like it's all wrapped up.

    11. I want issue 24.It may not be my favorite Archer and Armstrong story, but I Iaughed, I cried it was better than Cats!
