    1. This book is plot driven and compelling. The male protagonist is almost three dimensional and I did care about him a bit, mostly because he was a balanced combination of gun-toting, shoot-now-ask-questions-late and vulnerable puppy. You get a good sense of these contradictions through his drawling, wry dialogue and his internal conflict. The plot develops in complexity as the narrative progresses. I was happy enough with the romantic story line in the beginning, so the additional layers were a g [...]

    2. Mean town blues is a classic noir crime story about Tommy who is home from the Iraq war after being shot and decides to go to Chicago to visit his friend (and crash on his couch). He meets a girl called Lisa who is being stalked by a creep and Tommy decides to have a "talk" with the guy but the creep ends up dead. The only problem is the creep is actually the son of a high ranked mobster and his father thinks it's a rival outfit out for revenge. It was a well written book with plenty of plot turn [...]

    3. This is the first book by Sam Reaves that disappointed me. The plot is driven by several incongruous decisions. The protagonist vacillates between action hero and lovesick kid. Previous books have been wonderful; the plots always fresh, complex but not convoluted, and the characters both realistic and vivid. This time the author is trying too hard, and it shows. From the get go one can predict the femme fatale twist, and even the last minute sappy ending. None of this will stop me from reading h [...]

    4. This is another excellent book by Sam Reaves. Tommy McClain returns from Iraq to his native Chicago and bunks with an old high school friend. He meets a beautiful woman who is being stalked by a major creep. Tommy volunteers to intervene and suddenly finds himself in major trouble with the cops, the FBI, and the mob as well. Reaves knows Chicago inside and out. The settings are great; the characters are well drawn, and once the book gets rolling, the action is non-stop.

    5. Trust meI'm a copThis story about Chicago's finest and the Mob under estimating a vet with PTSD and combat skills is almost believable
