    1. When you see gothic historical romance, instantly the mind brings forward Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights, both of their time yet containing all of the expectations one hopes for the genre. I was hoping for similar in this title, and in some respects, the story did not disappoint. With a less-than innovative or original premise, and the loss of a subplot that was only resurrected near the end, however, the story lacked that certain tension and deep revelations of shocking secrets that kept this f [...]

    2. The Mistress of Raghery by Raine English is a 2013 Elusive Dreams Press Publication. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.Sheeva Desmond, penniless and homeless, is set to marry Cedric. However, on her wedding day, Cedric fails to appear for the ceremony. When Sheeva, running down the road in her wedding gown, is nearly ran over, it is mistaken for a suicide attempt.Ronan Quinn takes Sheeva back to his home on Rathlin Island, Ireland to [...]

    3. A dark, Gothic romance, Mistress of Raghery was a lovely romance read. It wasn't perfect, but I still really enjoyed reading it.Sheeva was a strong heroine. She had to deal with a lot and she stayed strong through it all. However, she did tend to be irrational and overdramatic at times and that annoyed me. But, overall, I liked her.Ronan was great. I'm going to be honest, he could be a jerk at times. But, he was sweet and devoted to his loved ones. I really liked him.The romance was lovely. Shee [...]

    4. Great book! This was an excellent book. Very suspenseful. I loved Sheeva and Ronan. If you like gothic romance you will love this book.

    5. Mistress of Raghery is an eerie Gothic novel set in the victorian era on Rathlin Island, where there are rumors of ghosts and gossip of murder. It is an island laced with secrets. It was a chore having to sail for hours to reach civilization. For years, Rathlin had been plagued by smugglers. The shores of this rocky Island had been used to bring in whiskey and lace from Scotland. Sheeva Desmond's life had crumbled. She had been played a fool by Cedric, who called off their wedding one hour befor [...]

    6. Another amazing book from Raine English! This is by far my favorite book by her. I could not put this down, it was just so good! The only bad thing I will say about this book (if you can call it bad?), is that I wish it were longer. The main character is Sheeva Desmond. She is a nineteen year old girl, who was about to be married, but her fiance left her at the alter. Her parents are dead and she is penniless. She is offered a position as governess by Ronan Quinn. Ronan is a widower and a father [...]

    7. Title: Mistress of RagheryAuthor: Raine EnglishRating: 4.5/5 starsSimilar reads: Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre" and Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw"Mistress of Raghery is a beautifully written novel of suspense and dramatic romance. It is the story of Sheeva Desmond, who reluctantly accepts the position of governess for Ronan Quinn's son Irial after being left at the altar by the influential Cedric because of her depleted fortunes. The governess' position has been deserted before by a few w [...]

    8. I love old fashioned gothic romances and they are few and far between so I was really looking forward to this, but sadly I was disapponted. The plot wasn't particularly innovative, impoverished heroine takes job as governess to brooding Hero's troubled child in remote manor, complete with deceased wife who died in mysterious circumstances. This wouldn't have bothered me if it had been executed well but it has been done better. There seemed to be too much of a rush to get the story going, to the [...]

    9. It's funny how some people felt there was a rush in this book and I agree that there was a little rush to get her from first meeting the guy to becoming a governess but after that I felt the story actually was too slow. It was all supposed to be creepy and possibly a sighting of a ghost but as others mentioned I didn't really feel any tension it Just didn't grip me. However, I liked the interactions between the two leads and felt the tension between them was good. The question of why the son was [...]

    11. h:Sheeva DesmondH: Ronan Quinn, Master of Rathlin IslandSo you got Sheeva whos life has not turned out as she expected when her parents die and she left with nothing. She always thought she would be married and run her own home by now. Sadly she is forced to take a job as a governess to a moody master and a troubled kid. Not only is that hard enough but there rumors he killed his first wife. My favorite was the Hero again. I really liked Ronan. I think it was a good book .I would definitely chec [...]

    12. I received this book as an advanced copy from NetGalley.Definitely an interesting story. I was very curious to see how the whole thing would turn out. There were some parts that I thought were awkward, but overall I liked the story. The author's writing seemed strange at first, like she's still finding her maturity in the whole thing. There were a few other issues I had with the book and characters, but overall I liked the story well enough.

    13. I loved this gothic, novel. It reminded me of Victoria Holt novels . It had lots of suspense, and at times had me holding my breath. I also loved the characters. They really fit with the story line. The romance was also exciting. The child that she helps breaks your heart at first, but later you feel relieved at his progress. The book kept my interest, and I was anxious to untangle the mystery. I loved the ending. It was a fast read since I stayed up late to finish it.

    14. Almost like Jane EyreAlmost like Jane EyreThis story did hold my attention but even though it took me awhile to determine who and why I felt the characters could have had a little more depth.

    16. Lack of trying is the reason this isn't getting finished. I got to a part that made me angry and I don't have the patience right now to try to get past it.

    17. An enjoyable read! I liked the characters and the plot! The story was interesting too! Great for holidays!
