    1. I'm not a fantasy reader at all but I really enjoyed the book. The characters are easy to relate to and the world of the Southernlands easy to picture and understand. Dyane has a wonderful ability to describe people, places and events in an economical but effective manner. In just a few lines, characters and scenes spring to life and draw you into the story. When I was a few pages shy of finishing, it dawned on me that I was going to be left hanging until the next book was ready. So there's no p [...]

    2. Fantasies are tricky for me. I'm not one to read long sagas with epic battles and queens and kings and the like. I have read them, and every once in a while, it's nice. The Purple Morrow was a wonderful, lighter fantasy to satisfy my craving for that genre. Forde is a newer author, but don't let that fool you. She's a natural writer and has a beautiful and magical way with words, very fitting for the light-fantasy setting she's created in this story. The language supports a great cast of charact [...]

    3. The Purple Morrow is an exciting, well-written fantasy tale set in a unique world where the Rovers from the North tear through the Southernlands where the main characters of the book live. Jeru, a clan hunter, suffers after the loss of his wife and tends to stay away from his clan, but the threat hanging over his clan and the clans close by doesn’t let him stay uninvolved when the people dear to him get hurt. What I immediately noted to myself is that the author did a great job creating three- [...]

    4. Take a chance. I usually don’t go buying books without knowing more about the author, or hearing rave reviews from friends, or not having pictures in it (I kid, I kid). If you’re familiar with at least any of Dyane Forde’s writing style and narrative voice with her short stories, then you’ll be in for a treat with her book. A wonderful world that pulls you in from introduction to end—I hate to say it but it’s the characters that did it for me though, usually in fantasy I’m pulled b [...]

    5. This book is a wonderful fantasy. Dyane depicts a world of change, adventure, and love! Her vivid characters and depictions makes you escape into another place. I truly enjoyed this novel and am looking forward to the continued saga!

    6. I REALLY LIKED ITThis almost reached a loved it rating, but it just fell a hair short for me. If you’re even remotely considering picking it up, I recommend you do so. It’s a good story, has a nice set of characters, and an interesting world.First off, the world is set with more of a clan type feel versus huge cities and an advanced civilization, though I think they might exist in other parts of the world. Not to say the clans are caveman-like, just that it’s more of a close-knit community [...]

    7. A Fantasy drama filled with action and adventure! For the reader The Purple Morrow begins with a simple map, a thoughtful add-on or accessory to the fantasy story filled with action and adventure. I found myself referring frequently to the map of that imaginary faraway land of Marathana as I began following the characters on their journey. The author, Dyane Forde, does not detail the exact time period of her story, which helps in a good way to trigger the imagination of the reader as The Papilion [...]

    8. I read this book on my Kindle and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would describe it as gripping and fascinating all at the same time. The Author 'Dyane Forde' takes you on an amazing journey in-to another world and describes the characters so well that for me they almost jumped off the page! I felt like they were real people and I started to relate to them, I like a book that tells me something about the characters and this book does just that. I do not want to give away the story but it [...]

    9. I thoroughly enjoy this book. From the language to the characters to the world created, the story is vividly told and sucks you in. The Purple Morrow is about Jeru who has experience so much loss in his life, about Kelen who is commander of a band of Rovers pillaging the Southerland, and about Nyssa who is still waiting for the man she loves to come for her. With three perspectives, the story could be confusing, but Dyane's use of separate chapters and page breaks makes the point of view change [...]

    10. The Purple Morrow was, as a lover of fantasy, a world I could get lost in. I'd recommend this for all kinds of fantasy lovers, but especially for people who tend to favor high or epic fantasy (even though it isn't, really. I feel like it flirts that line a little.)First of all, Forde did an excellent job of world building and creating. I felt like she knew where she was in the world, which isn't always the case in fantasy stories. Except for one character, I felt like everyone was really consist [...]

    11. The folk lore tale is that the Old Egan left the Mother clan to populate the Southernland. The Erne clan was founded also. Commander Kelen leads the band of Rovers (warriors) & the clansman to do battle in the Southernlands. The Rovers leave behind nothing but death/destruction. However their main goal was to find/destroy Papilion. Jeru manages to survive. Does he really lose the 1 he loves? On their honeymoon Jeru (clan hunter) & Aliyah (water clan, 10 children) were at Silver Springs w [...]

    12. This book was refreshing as it wasn’t set in a typical medieval world. In fact there was something almost prehistoric about the clans who lived in caves and were only just discovering what tables were. There were also different cultures hinted at to the north, not only the marauding Rovers, but a more advanced culture that was behind their reasons for marauding in the first place. That helped to make the threat to the southern clans more well rounded. The creation of the mythology around the bu [...]

    13. What a fantastically enjoyable read! Strong characters and plot, wonderful world building and a depth of emotion that kept me hooked throughout! What caught my attention first about The Purple Morrow was how wonderful and well formed the realm here is, with a civilization living in hollowed out cliffs and other groups living in other well thought out parts of the land. The descriptions Forde uses in her writing really bring the world alive for me, making it all the easier to feel as if I was the [...]

    14. I highly recommend The Purple Morrow for epic fantasy lovers. My biggest complaint with epic fantasy is that its too damn long. I got other books to read, people to see, and I have a bad habit of putting off my entire life until the book is finished (I neglect to cook while I'm in the middle of a good book). I did not have that problem with The Purple Morrow. I was able to fully immerse myself in a very detailed fantasy world and fall in love with the characters (even the bad guy), without aband [...]

    15. A delightful ReadAn engrossing story, compelling characters, and gorgeous prose. While a few minor issues in the narrative prevented a full five stars, they do not detract from this delightful read by a talented author. Dyane Forde has written her way onto my preferred reading list, and I look forward to the continuing Saga of The Purple Morrow and the fascinating characters of Marathana.

    16. A masterpiece of paranormal historical fiction, The Purple Morrow, Book One in the Rise of the Papilion (sic) trilogy by Canadian author Dyane Ford, left me breathless, my heart pounding. It passes the Neil Gaiman literary quality litmus test with flying colors. It made a powerful initial impression, remains in my thoughts like a lover throughout the subsequent days and permanently colored the lenses through which I view my world. If you liked the movies Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Excalibu [...]

    18. A good and unique read for fantasy lovers! The story flowed easily, but could be confusing at some points, however, it is expertly well written. The characters of this story are perfectly fleshed out, the plot is quite entertaining and the world the author built, is easy to envision. I give this book 4 of 5 stars because I truly enjoyed reading this story but there were moments where I was confused. Nevertheless, I do look forward in reading the rest of the series and hope the author can make th [...]

    19. This book has you feeling as if you're living in Jeru's world. You can hear the waterfalls, feel the leaves as you walk in his forest, and you can even hear the thunder. The worldbuilding is spectacular. Jeru is a truly torn character, and I love emotional struggles. Heading to book 2.

    20. I don't often read fantasy novels, but The Purple Morrow is a great read. Dyane Fords is a gifted writer who brings the land of Marathana to life. The book is packed with action as Forde chronicles the lives and challenges of the key characters - Jeru, Kelen and Nyssa. Well worth a read.

    21. The butterfly metaphor was especially annoying. Over-the-top dramatic, dragged on, and by the end of it, you find out that the big "mysteries" will be answered in the second book.
