Mike Mullin s first job was scraping the gum off the undersides of desks at his high school From there, things went steadily downhill He almost got fired by the owner of a bookstore due to his poor taste in earrings He worked at a place that showed slides of poopy diapers during lunch it did cut down on the cafeteria budget The hazing process at the next company included eating live termites raised by the resident entomologist, so that didn t last long either For a while Mike juggled bottles at a wine shop, sometimes to disastrous effect Oh, and then there was the job where swarms of wasps occasionally tried to chase him off ladders So he s really hoping this writing thing works out.Mike holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo He lives in Indianapolis with his wife and her three cats ASHFALL is his first novel.

    1. i realized the other day that i had only read books by female authors since the turn of the new year. that day, i decided to make a month out of it and continue the streak. that was also the day that i learned that this short story existed. had, in fact, existed since OCTOBER. which, thanks for the heads-up, mike mullin. so - a dilemma. do i continue the streak, or do i make an exception since this story only contains female characters, and since darla is one of the most fantastic teenage girl c [...]

    2. SO. MUCH. ANGST.And it's not even angst, it's RAGE. I fucking hate Ruth like I've not hated a character since god. Maybe Levana? But Ruth's not even a VILLAIN, okay? She's an idiot. My brain seriously paints her as that one aunt who has taken to technology so wholeheartedly that she literally cannot function without it. BEYOND no common sense here. I honestly have no clue how Ruth has lasted as long as she has, because she can't even stop to think things outL THAT NONSENSE ASIDE -- This story is [...]

    3. This was an excellent novella that gives you more background on Darla, who is a very strong and interesting character. If you loved the Ashfall trilogy, you'll want to read this novella, just to have a bit more time in that world. I have also heard that a 4th book might be added to the trilogy in 2018, so I am very hopeful. It's a very dark, gritty, violent, and fascinating post-apocalyptic story, so if you can't handle violence or gore, you might want to pass on this. However, the depth of the [...]

    4. Also posted at Sporadic ReadsMike Mullin's Ashfall Series, is one of the best dystopian stories out there. After picking up the first book, I had to read the next. Unfortunately, the last book, Sunrise, is set to be released on April 2014! It's a wonderful thing that Mullin gave us this novella whilst waiting for said book! Darla is the best person that Alex, the male protagonist of the series, met! In this book, we learned more about Darla's background and family life. We get to have a peek in [...]

    5. This was the first time I tried reading a book, actually a novella, in English. How to say, it was really an exciting experience! In this novella, you will find Darla's life right after the supervolcano until the moment Alex appeared on her door. Once again, Darla appeared to be a clever girl since she figured out how to go to the barn, which was just 10 meter from her house, or made a pump to take water from the well, or fixed the tractor. She was a good-hearted girl, but a stupid selfish woman [...]

    6. I'm a big fan of the Ashfall series and had already read this when it first came out but I decided to try the audio and see. Well I loved it!! Sarah Chevalier did a great job with Darla. She really captured her spirit and drive. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. The story is from Darla's POV from the eruption till when she meets Alex. Now there isn't anything new in this that we didn't already know from the first book but I loved seeing it actually from Darla's POV and not just told by her. [...]

    7. I love Darla! Awesome little story.I wished Darla had of run over Ruth a little more thoroughly too.

    8. 2.5 StarsTo see my full review:wp/p1jhaj-4omFans of the Ashfall series will be happy to note that Mullin has indeed written a novella that focuses on the life and times of Darla and her mother prior to the volcano and their meeting of Alex. However, as it is a novella, it is extremely short and, in my opinion, a bit redundant for readers who have already picked up the series. For those who have read Ashfall, we already have a good knowledge base of Darla’s story as she’s told it before; all [...]

    9. While shorter than I wished it would have been, this novella from Darla's perspective provided amazing insight into what happened to Darla and her mother Gloria when the Yellowstone Super volcano erupted, during the timeline of ASHFALL, just prior to Alex trekking across country on his skis and stumbling into Darla's barn before passing out from blood loss.I had hoped it would continue, providing me Darla's POV of Alex when they first met and got to know each other. And, given the contents of th [...]

    10. Heeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy, what was this, Mike? Really. There wasn't really anything about Darla that we didn't know except the old lady thing. What a waste of publication money.I was expecting Darla's point of view when she met Alex and all.

    11. Darla's Story - must read for Ashfall fans Darla's Story gives great insight into Darla's experiences with the eruption and ashfall before Alex collapses into her barn. I loved it. Fans of the series should definitely read this novella.

    12. Oh, Darla, you're going to fall so helplessly in love later with that stupid, softhearted boyfriend of yours. He's a keeper.

    13. Full disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book from the author.Darla’s Story is a novella that provides a bit of back-story for a character in Mike Mullin’s Ashfall trilogy. I haven’t read the trilogy, but the author meant the novella to stand alone as a complete work, so I read it with that in mind.I instantly liked the fact that this story features an Iowan farm girl as its main character. I also liked that it doesn’t take place in a far-flung dystopian future. Instead, it [...]

    14. I am about as big of an Ashfall fan as you can get. It was nice to read something from Darla's perspective, but something about it just didn't ring true with me. The other three books currently have received my rare five star rating. I've only read comments for this on , but I agree with what quite a few say: it's sort of redundant if you've already read Ashfall. I was convinced that this wouldn't be a problem, but the only thing I learned was that Darla's middle name is Jane (and I am certainly [...]

    15. Darla's Story is a very nice addition to the Ashfall series. The readers get an inside view of Darlas' life from the point when the Yellowstone super-volcano erupts up until Alex stumbles to their barn. It was nice to get an inside view of how Darla works and how she thinks. She's the only child in her family and was very much a daddy's girl but not in the typical way where she has him wrapped around her finger and is super girly because if you know Darla, she is the opposite of girly girl. Her [...]

    16. I had started Ashfall when I read this novella, but I had read only a pair of chapters when I saw that this one was sort of a prequel, and I decided that I had to read it first. And I'm very glad I did, cause it helped me understand Darla so much better when we meet her in Ashfall!Darla lost her dad a while back and since then, she's had to juggle school and work in the family farm to keep going, since her mom retreated inside religion. They're both at the farm when the eruption happens, and the [...]

    17. I saw this book and decided to read it, since I have been interested in this series for a long time. But after reading this? I am not sure if I want to read it. I am sure Darla will play a big role and after this book I am not sure if I like her that much. I loved her at the beginning, she was a bit awkward with things, a bit silly, a little tomboy, but as soon as the volcano erupts and hell breaks loose she turns into a mechanical zombie that is only thinking about fixing this and that, going h [...]

    18. In "Darla's Story (The Ashfall Trilogy)" Mike Mullin gives insight into the challenges that Darla Edmunds faces after the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts and ash rains down coating the land. With her father dead for the last three years, she has to use her intellect and mechanical ability if she and her mother are going to survive the disaster. What she doesn't expect is a theft that will rob them of supplies and her tractor or the appearance of a bloodied stranger at the door. The novella is sho [...]

    19. The Ashfall series is one of my favorite young adult series of all time. I really think Darla saves Alex and gives him a purpose and reason to keep fighting to survive throughout the series. I also really like Darla’s inventions and her ability to solve just about any problem. When I saw there was a short story about Darla’s first day after the eruption of Yellowstone, I knew I had to read it. It really opened my eyes at how responsible and intelligent Darla really is. I can say I do not thi [...]

    20. I really like Darla because she's a very strong girl and the opposite of a 'girlie'. I liked her story because it was a nice addition to the story of Ashfall. Her character is very well painted: 'I will not give up, I will find a solution, I am there for my mother and I say what I think.' (that's not a quote from the book ^^). But again she also has flaws and is no superhero. That makes her so likeable. The book describes how Darla (and her mother) experience the eruption of the Yellowstone Super [...]

    21. If you love Mike Mullin's Ashfall, odds are good Darla's your favorite character. She's my favorite character and this is my favorite of Mike's stories. At last, we get to see the end of the world from Darla's viewpoint and we learn more about her complex relationship with her mother. We also get to see how she forms the opinions that explain many of her actions in the larger trilogy. At only .99, this may be the best deal anywhere. If you like Ashfall, you owe it to yourself to check out this st [...]

    22. This novella is a companion piece to the Ashfall series, in which the eruption of a massive volcano plunges the country into an ash-covered wintry nightmare. The Ashfall series focuses on teen Alex, who transforms from somewhat bratty son to heroic leader over the course of the series -- thanks in large part to the remarkable Darla. Darla is the girl who stitches up Alex's wounds when he stumbles upon her family farm. She's tough, resilient, incredibly inventive, and absolutely loyal. In Darla's [...]

    23. This review is for the audiobook I was excited to win through Mike Mullin’s Audio Ebook Giveaway. After enjoying the Ashfall trilogy so much, I had high expectations for Darla’s Story. Mullin does not disappoint. Not only does it integrate seamlessly with the trilogy, but carriers the same quality and tone. Adding backstory to a strong existing storyline is sometimes risky, but Mullin does it very well. It has further kindled my excitement for when the 4th book will be released. In some ways, [...]

    24. Overall, this is a moderately entertaining, though rather unnecessary prequel to the events of Ashfall. I didn't like Darla's contempt for her mother's religious devotion, but I also found it hard to believe that a woman married to a man as capable as Darla's father could be so helpless. The character Ruth explains why Darla is so adamant about not trusting anyone and why she was initially so rough with Alex. However, I thought the best parts of the story were Darla's resourcefulness. Let's all h [...]

    25. After reading Ashfall and Ashen Winter, I downloaded this and read it while waiting for Sunrise to arrive.I loved how this gave you more insight into Darla and why she was so annoyed when Alex fell into the barn. It was short and sweet and left us knowing more about Darla and her crazy awesome mechanical skills than you get from the books, and let us see how she survived the initial eruption and all the little things we don't get from the from Alex, like the doll's house, which is way too girly [...]

    26. Mostly wish there was more. It didn't really take me 3 days to read this - more like an hour or so. Darla is a great character so I was glad to get a baby bit of what happened before Alex showed up at her farm. I'm trying to remember if there were any other characters in the first book in as much denial as the old lady - not sure if I can quite believe that someone could be that deluded in this particular context (maybe in a less affected place? it sounded pretty apocalyptic fire and brimstone g [...]
