    1. This is a well written and spectacularly photographed look at the year when fires burned out of control through most of Yellowstone National Park and region. Wildfires are now considered to be nature's way of using up old dead wood - conifers grow quickly but rot slowly so fires release the nutrients and make room for seedlings. A fire was named after the area where it started and they quickly merged so immense regions were ablaze at once and only the winter's snows ended them. The rangers just [...]

    2. A day by day account of forest fires in Yellowstone in the summer of 1988. Interesting for anyone familiar with the park. Amazing that tourists were allowed such free access despite the widespread fire situation. It's also a good study of the various policies concerning wildfires, whether to fight them or let them burn. Some good stories of real heroics and also bureaucratic bumbling are interspersed throughout.

    3. I really, really liked this book because of the first-hand perspective it provided on the 1988 Yellowstone Fires. While I remember hearing about the Yellowstone Fires, I was between my first and second years of college, and between working two jobs and having knee surgery that summer, I was a little wrapped up in myself. This book provided some great insights into how the summer unfolded and just how major the fires were. The author shares his own story as well as the stories of many others he k [...]

    4. I would have liked to have learned more about wildfire management in a more condensed way. It would have been more informative to understand the pre and post shift in thinking. I also would have liked more information about the media coverage during the fire. Why tourist where allowed in the park. Feels like there was so much more to the story.

    5. A day by day account and photographs of all the fires in Yellowstone National Park that grew out of control in the summer of 1988. The large format (8.5x11) of the book was great for the photographs, but made reading a little more difficult.
