    1. This isn't MM, nor for the titillation crowd. It's a true story about a boy and his upbringing in a place few have ever known or will understand.

    2. Bernard Foong was born into a wealthy family in Malaysia. He attended an English public school in the 1960s, where he - along with a few other carefully chosen boys - was groomed by older boys (BBs or 'Valets') before being enrolled in a secret society (thought to have been founded by Lord Byron) to provide sexual services to members of elite and royal families of various Middle Eastern countries in a palatial household in Dubai. He calls the society E.R.O.S. (not its real name) and in his schoo [...]

    3. I am rather curious about this book. Pretty sure my reading experience of this book would be very different from other readers since I am a local. I am from Malaysia, same as the author. I took a peek at the book and there are local jargon there which of course a familiarity to me. Not sure if that is a good thing since I might judge this book too critically based on my own experience as a local. Which I am pretty sure I would. I might have difficulties believing what I am reading should there b [...]

    4. Having known the author for more than 20 years, I found it difficult to believe the fact that Young had gone through the numerous experiences he had mentioned in his memoirs. He had never revealed any of his secret life to me. At times, when I was reading his memoir, I had doubts as to the truth of its contents. I had wondered if the events actually transpired as described by the author or whether it was all part of his imagination in writing the book. However, I have recently reconnected with Yo [...]

    5. A Scrumptious and Indulgent “Must” ReadIn a culture that prizes the birth of male babies above all else, it is little wonder that Bernard Foong had difficulty with his father reconciling his sexuality. Given that this is a biography, the same culture prices the sexuality accordingly of young, pliant pubescent boys, just like Mr Foong. Raised and surrounded by indulgence, in a sub-culture Westerners not only do not accept but do not understand, Mr Foong emerged strong, centered, developed and [...]

    6. I had a hard time with this writer at first. Foong comes off as ridiculous if your reading muscles are weak and you lack the ability to observe and give him some time to make his point. I ended up loving his campy and self-obsessed writing style. It's actually very refreshing to read something that hasn't been edited (re-written) by a major publishing house. However, he isn't going to win many writing prizes with this book. Know this, and drop the critiques of his writing style-you are seriously [...]

    7. "Initiation (A Harem Boy's Saga Book 1)" by Bernard Foong Young is an amazing memoir revealing quite a remarkable life story. The author shares with great honesty and openess the story of his privileged, yet complicated upbringing as atypical boy in Kuala Lumpur, London and the UNited Arab Emirates. His infatuation with sewing, fashion and men and how his first encounters with the same sex played out for him.For me, a European, the insights into Far Eastern and Middle Eastern culture were fascin [...]

    8. This is my second book by Young, and I enjoyed this book even more than I enjoyed the first book, if that is at all possible. As a heterosexual female, I’ve never delved into the life of a homosexual male or female. I went about my business and thought, as Young said, live and let live; however, Young brought home to me, on a very personal level, the life of a gay young man, from childhood to adult. The story had an emotional impact on me that was profound and the way the author presented the [...]

    9. I'm not going to lie- I downloaded this hoping for some romantic yet titilating prose. There were hints of it but it wasn't really what I was looking for or appreciate in a book at the moment.Just not my thing. Sorry.

    10. From the age of 6, he knew what he desired to do with his life. He wanted to be a fashion designer. Opportunities manifested to help him learn a variety of skills which would further aid him to achieve this goal. For him, talking fashion was a way for him to bond with a wide range of people. Who knew his love of fashion would unlock even more doors.I won’t mention Yoong’s father for he was unaccepting of his son’s choices and therefore provides little to no positive reflection from my stan [...]

    11. As Bernard Foong says about his induction into a secret sexual society as a young boy, it was not slavery. Instead it was a lavish experience that made Young the man he became - of which gentleness and humility are both a part. As he quotes the word of Jesus of Nazareth, let alone those who are unblemished cast the first stone at the the sinner. It leaves us with one question, “What is sin?”When a university prices itself permanently out of reach of most aspiring candidates, is that sin? Or [...]

    12. Not your typical LBGT:I received this novel for an honest review. I should start out by saying that I don’t usually read these books and therefore have no basis on what to rank it with its kind. Having said that, this is not that bad of a story. It is a memoir to tell the truth. Although it is a memoir and depicts the truth, the thing that made it a hard read for me wasn’t the homosexuality of the story, but the writing style. I don’t know if it was because of the language barrier or not, [...]

    13. Where to begin? Seldom am I at a loss for words, but this book, an autobiography, not a work of fiction, has left me speechless and deeply moved. I know Young's intention is to educate the world about a lifestyle which he considers a blessing, but to me, he has done much more than that. We all hear the nature versus nurture argument, and I've wondered how much it actually does affect a person's sexual and emotional development. Parental love and approval play a huge role in a child's development [...]

    14. When you start reading Harlem boys saga by benard foong, it's like many other books. As you go further you enter whole new world of this sissy boy yoong(chinese name for foong). You discover alot about being gay. What comes to mind is that this book was written for africans. A place where being gay is equated to a curse and always attracts hatred even from those closest to you. I learn that its so normal to be gay. This book has opened my eyes to a whole new world beyond my imagination. I recomm [...]

    15. This is a touching, true account of a boy who's gay.The author takes you on his journey thru life as he grew up. He knew he was different from other boys, and throughout his childhood, he stayed true to his self. He documents his life experiences, both positive and negative, with precision through a child's eyes while not holding anything back. I recommend this book as a must-read for any boy or girl struggling to come to grips with their sexuality. One should embrace it because it is intertwine [...]

    16. "This was an amazing book, which I truly enjoyed. It was not only a story of a young boy's sexual experiences but also a novel of love and travel to exotic places. I was raised in a very conservative family and will most likely never experience the freedom expressed in this book, so it is with wonder that I read this tale of adventure. This book is an joyful expression of life that is so honestly stated that it makes one wonder why repression is still an active force in our world. I can't wait t [...]

    17. One of the most interesting individuals that I have ever had the pleasure to get to know via the written word. His life has been an awe inspiring journey of love, lust and everything in between. An open mind can create an open heart. You must have an open mind to see the beauty in everything. Bernard Foong is one of those beautiful souls. He brings you along with him on this exotic ride of wonderment. I'll definitely keep reading about his fascinating life and I'm looking forward to what comes n [...]

    18. This is badly written, poorly edited and read more like a pretentious outline/resume of the authors preternatural fashion design and musical theater talent. He makes the attempt to sound enlightened and eccestential, but comes off as "hippie cult member type" -- complete with the brainwashed grooming. The only place I've read worse was in unedited rough drafts and some fanfiction.I was going to review this on my site but I didn't want to waste my time on a book that I honestly do not want to enc [...]

    19. I couldn't put this down! Young immerses us into the world of boarding schools, secret sex societies, bonding with the mentor who first helped him awaken to his sexuality. From Malaysia to the UK to the Arab world, this book touched different soils and revealed different truisms. Indulgent at times, emotional at other times, descriptive -- definitely a Must Read that has me eager to read the rest of the books in the series.

    20. Fascinating, exciting, sexy story. Interesting hidden view of the Arab world. This book is "very" personal and well written.I enjoyed very much the quotes in the beginning of each chapter "A hearth that loves is always young" 4.0 out of 5 stars RivetingScott

    21. A well written autobiography that I could not put down. Young, a boy from a wealthy family in Malaysia is sent to boarding school and initiated into a secret society, where he is trained in sexual seduction. Recommended.

    22. I enjoyed this book on many levels. Based on my visits to Penang, Young’s description of Malaysia rings true. The story’s narrative voice changes as the hero, Young, matures – going from Malaysia to Britain to Dubai, so it works well as an autobiography. Young’s story is eventually less about sexual awakening than the role of the senses in spiritual and social fulfillment.Young and Andy’s time in Venice is an enjoyable Odyssey of food, ancient piazzas and canals, car trips, days in the [...]

    23. Judging the book by its cover I was expecting sultry, steamy, sex from cover to cover. But what I got was so much more. This memoir (yes, these stories are true!) starts with Yoong's formative years. It is very open about his parents' marriage and his challenges in his youth. This showed me how sensitive he was, and endeared him to me. I was hooked. I had to find out how he went from shy "sissy boy" (and I quote the author there) to a gorgeous man.We do travel to England and then on to Dubai where t [...]
