    1. “Man, you been coming ever since that shark bit you. Every year the Summer King say the same damn thing: ain’t no growing back hands, feet, or nothing like that. What’s gone is gone. You been knowing it!”so many free tor short reviews to burn through, my friends…i was happy to find this older story by the author of one of my favorite free tor shorts ever: The Devil in America. like devil, this is beautifully-written and fully-realized, with a densely constructed world the reader is sho [...]

    2. Super Bass is a dense, 'slice-of-life' piece of fantasy fiction that's also a love story. The prose is rich, sensual and deeply interior. It reminds of me of early Delany, when he just throws you into an alien landscape and then challenges you to fill in the dots. The milleu has a vague candomble feel, a lush tropical world where the gods inhabit/"possess" their chosen vessels, transforming them into supernatural healers. The story is about a consort to one of these god-vessels. Polyamory and sa [...]

    3. this is why most short stories, if they're standalones, don't work all that well for me: I want to know more! I want more about the world, and about the characters. It's as if right when I start getting invested, it ends.

    4. I am a big fan of Kai Ashante Wilson. I particularly enjoyed his award winning The Devil in America, and his story set in the Wildeep fictional universe. I was eager to read some more by the author, and I discovered this novelette published by Tor. It is a good story, and I can see in it some hints of the themes, greatness, and craft of his later work.It is the story of Gian, that returns to Sea-john from the Kingdom's wars certain that he has skills beyond killing, death and destruction. He nee [...]

    5. Why isn't there more?!I must have read all the pages of this book twice! I was so mad because I knew it was short, but I wanted so much morel this lush fantasy and culture, poly marriages, black and mixed peoples, war and the most Iyrical description of PTSD. So lovely.

    6. Another story from the unique imagination of Kai Ashante Wilson, beautifully blending magic and reality, our world and Wilson's alternate realm. A shorter and slighter story than The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps, but Wilson's prose is as gripping and wonderful as always.

    7. Another awesome, engrossing story from Kai Ashante Wilson. Excuse me while I devour the rest of what he's written and then get sad that there isn't that much!

    8. Adult fantasy about a nice place where not much happens and marriage is only legal if 3 people are involved in the contract.

    9. Incredible world building for such a short story, wonderful language. The twenty-three Gian is back from the wars and doing much better now that he is in love with Cianco. We meet them in the day Cianco is proclaimed Sommer King and with the title come thaumaturgic powers. But probably the one of the most astounding miracles Cianco performs is to help Gian to set aside his terrible past. When Gian was away fighting and killing he thought: «some day, home again, turn your hand to something better [...]

    10. Our lovely boy, Gianni-mi, is a warrior returning from some distant swath of violence. Carrying damage and a stomach full of lead and secrets, he wants to lose himself to the panacea of love. And he's found it, hasn't he? He's found the perfect partner in his lover Cianco, wild and floral, the Summer King. Often enough his lover had said, “I get so lonely for you, Gianni. Sometimes when you’re right here by me.” And then would come the bulwark of a hand, supportive somewhere on the back of [...]

    11. My favorite piece of writing from an absolute treasury of imaginative genius. Love love LOVE this story! Love love LOVE this author!

    12. I know technically it's not a book, but I'm still counting it as part of my initiative to read more "short" fiction. This was fantastic. The world building is stellar and it makes me want to read more about this world. The language is beautiful and Wilson reminds me of so many writers that I love that aren't genre writers. I'm going to read more of his very soon. It's something I'm considering using in my class this year I liked it so much.

    13. Had to read it twice to really enjoy it (better to do it without the sun glaring on ye olde laptoppe screen) but now that I've done that, I'm super excited to dive into The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps.

    14. Too short. I felt like I hardly got a chance to get to know the characters. Classic Wilson, though - love this guy.
