Qu [...]

    2. I loved this book. It was creepy and unflinchingly bizarre. It is a fun, compulsive, and at times genuinely scary read but also a great exploration of xenophobia, the fear of the unknown, as well as what makes us "human". I think the author very much deserves his comparisons to Lovecraft, although I think it is one of those stories that you will enjoy most if you know very little about it, so I will leave it at that and warn you not to read too many reviews. This is the best horror book I have r [...]

    3. I'm reading all these reviews and not a single idea pops on my mind on why I shouldn't give this book more than one star. Yes, it had moments: it was bizarre and scared the shit out of me. No, I’ll be completely straight - it’s the second creepiest and the most disturbing book I have ever read. It’s in the same box with In the Miso soup, just I’ve experienced my first full blown anxiety attack with that Japanese one, so now I was somehow prepared for this Cold Skin, although not totally. [...]

    4. "We are never very far from those we hate. For this very reason, we shall never be truly close to those we love." With those words, Catalan author Albert Sanchez Piñol begins his tale of a young man who takes a position as a weather official on a remote island, out of the normal shipping lanes, along the coast of Antarctica. He is the unnamed narrator of this tale, and has opted for this position to exile himself from the rest of the world, needing some time and space to "negotiate between the [...]

    5. Got this book for a crazy low price. It was pointed out to me by someone else that read the back cover and told me it sounded similar to Silent Hill. It was enough to get me to buy it.I was actually reminded of Lovecraft's work (which I've been reading recently). An individual facing extraordinary, almost supernatural experiences, having to deal with strange creatures whose intentions are unknown. But that's where the Lovecraft comparison ends. This was my first time reading something by a Catal [...]

    7. The fact that I have read this book some years ago and remembering it I still get the creeps says a lot. I also remember being on winter vacation in a remote house and heedlesly starting reading it at night. And then not sleeping until the sun came up.Half of it was a bit slow, introverted and philosophical but the other half was bloodcurdling, bizarre and deeply disturbing. And I also saw that there is gonna be a movie!/title/tt1034385/

    13. An alternately brilliant and frustrating novel, COLD SKIN reads like a fever dream. Piñol has lots to say about war, colonialism, the cyclical nature of history, and man's inhumanity to man (and woman) in this allegory of a mostly deserted island being attacked nightly by strangely humanoid sea creatures. I enjoyed the novel very much, but I found myself stymied at times by two important elements. First, the prose is often too spare for its own good, which may or may not be a translation issue. [...]

    14. Cold Skin --let me start by assuring you that the bad title is not indicative of the quality of the book. This is a tale, with all the bad that that implies: a lack of sensory detail, a certain forgetfulness in the narrative, etc. But from another direction it is quite good: it is an allegory for almost anything. Its themes and imagery embark on a Jungian expansion into primal sources. The most frustrating thing is how the narrative overlooks the logic and possibilities of what it has set up, an [...]

    17. I'm still wrapping my brain around this one. As I lay witness to the slow demise of not only one but two men, I couldn't ignore how effected I was by the writing. How absolutely visceral all my emotions were about this book. So much so, that I tried so hard to put a "wall" up between my emotions and this book. (It didn't work).I couldn't help but get swept up on this remote island. At this point, I can't rate this book. Part of me hated it, part of me loved it, all of me was troubled by it, and [...]

    21. I'd never heard of this author and I have to say this book blew me away! It starts in a very standard fashion. The new lighthouse keeper? arrives on the small island, on the very edge of the world in order to escape his past. Little does he know what his future holds for him! On very few occasions can a book create the same scares as you will see in a horror movie, but this book manages it in one fell swoop. There I was, much like the character in the story, settling down for the night ahead, wh [...]

    23. "Consensual rape"?Well no.I would have enjoyed this book, I think, if not for the repeated scenes of the rape and other physical abuse of the main characters' captive non-human 'slave' (who while not initiating contact always responded with an overwhelming lust), which the narrator relayed in a matter-of-fact tone, while of course 'falling in love' with the slave, how touching. Chilling, but not in a good way. I couldn't work out if the author intended to condone the protagonist's behaviour, bec [...]

    24. This was a really interesting, creepy bookright up to the point where it didn't end. [Mild Spoiler Alert] When the ship was late, I started to realize this was probably going to have a disappointing ending. But I still held out hope that maybe it was a dream, or in his sub conscience, or even that he would turn in to one of them. Nope. It's one of those non-endings that's really supposed to make you think. I hate books like that.

    25. Wow. Now for something completely different. This is a story of a young man who takes a year long post on a tiny deserted island in the antarctic. The previous tenant is still in residence and behaving very strangely indeed. If that wasn't bad enough, every night hundreds of malevolent creatures come out of the sea and try to storm the lighthouse and cottage. Seriously weird and scary!

    26. Atradu šo grāmatu savas bērnības istabas grāmatplauktā, pārskatot to ar domu atrast kādu vēl neizlasītu grāmatu. Izrādās - māsas īpašums. Izlasot tās aprakstu uz aizmugurējā vāka, tā likās gana interesanta, lai būtu vērts to [pa kluso] aizņemties izlasīšanai.Vispār jau, lasot aprakstu, būtu man vajadzējis secināt, ka šis būs šausmu stāsts, bet kaut kā to biju palaidis garām. Tāpēc iznāca tāds kā patīkams pārsteigums. Tomēr beigās kaut kā pietrūka - [...]

    27. Hard to review this book, may have suffered a bit in the translation. Started out with a solid 4 stars, then ended with 2 stars. So I settled on 3 because it did hold my interest, and both the setting and the premise was quite interesting. Reminded me a bit of Heart of Darkness but a much easier read.
