      • Jacques Cazotte Luis Alberto de Cuenca Gérard de Nerval Edouard de Beaumont

Born at Dijon, he was educated by the Jesuits, and at the age of 27 he obtained a public office at Martinique It was not till his return to Paris in 1760 with the rank of commissioner general that he made his public debut as an author His first attempts, a mock romance and a coarse song, gained so much popularity, both in the Court and among the people, that he was encouraged to try something ambitious He accordingly produced his romance, Les Prouesses inimitables d Ollivier, marquis d Edesse. He also wrote a number of fantastic oriental tales, such as his Mille et une fadaises, Contes a dormir debout 1742 His first success was with a poem in twelve cantos, and in prose intermixed with verse, entitled Ollivier 2 vols, 1762 , followed in 1771 by another romance, the Lord Impromptu But the most popular of his works was the Diable amoureux 1772 , a fantastic tale in which the hero raises the devil The value of the story lies in the picturesque setting, and the skill with which its details are carried out.Cazotte possessed extreme facility and is said to have dashed off a seventh canto of Voltaire s Guerre civile de Gen ve in a single night About 1775 Cazotte embraced the views of the Illuminati, declaring himself possessed of the power of prophecy It was upon this event that Jean Fran ois de la Harpe based his famous jeu d esprit, in which he represents Cazotte as prophesying the most minute events of the French Revolution On the discovery of some of his counter revolutionary letters in August 1792, Cazotte was arrested and though he escaped for a time through the efforts of his daughter, he was beheaded the following month.A complete edition of his work was published as the uvres badines et morales, historiques et philosophiques de Jacques Cazotte 4 vols, 1816 1817 , though than one collection appeared during his lifetime.

    3. Jacques Cazotte’s novella The Devil in Love (1772) is a story about Alvaro, a cocky and curious youth who brazenly invokes Satan during a capriccio gone awry. Satan is taken aback by Alvaro’s seeming confidence and falls in love with him on the spot, entering his service as a womanly pageboy. Cazotte alternately describes Satan as a male or female, depending on Alvaro’s interpretation at the time – what he wants her/him to be.Satan wants sex, which s/he finally achieves after pages of pa [...]

    4. Şeytan, ne kılığına bürünürse bürünsün, nerede olursa olsun, ne olursa olsun şeytanlık vazifesini yerine getirir.

    6. Jacques Cazotte, as the story goes, predicted whom among his friends would be meeting Madame Guillotine as the horrors of the French Revolution unfolded; sadly, his prescience didn't include himself. Luckily, he's left behind this little gem of a book in which Beelzebub is summoned by a rank amateur (109 pages, 1772), and which although short, is a delight from beginning to end. The ending itself leaves much pause for thought and actually sent me back to the start for a second read. Within that [...]

    8. That was somewhat disappointing. Any story where a Devil (or Death) turn up in human form, tends to be pretty awesome. Thats an aesthetic or plot-point or whatever that i quite enjoy. This however was fairly bland given the setup. I'm absolutely sure its losing something in the translation but it can't be losing THAT much. One issue plot wise is that the protagonist is constantly trying not to sleep with this woman, because it would be dishonorable or something. Ok, thats a little strange given th [...]

Belzebù come maes [...]

    14. Gothic novellas have always been a weak spot for me. This one also does not disappoint! The way the story is written made me teleport to that period of time and dive into the surroundings and characters. 4 stars and an instant favourite!

    15. It's the age-old story: Boy summons demon to serve his friends an impressive collation; demon appears as a monstrous camel and terrifies boy; boy complains and demon-camel vomits up a demon-spaniel; demon-spaniel transforms into a comely young woman who - if she dresses up nice - can pass for a pageboy; boy falls in love with demon-pageboy-woman; demon-pageboy-woman something something something your mother's dead, or is she?; demon-pageboy-woman-camel-spaniel-thing disappears; boy finds out mot [...]

    16. K tejto knihe ma priviedol Dumasov klub, podľa ktorého Polanski (nie najlepšie) zrežíroval film Deviata brána (s Johnnym Deppom).Bolo to zaujímavé, takéto magické starinky môžem. Prečítala by som si aj celú knihu. výzva 2017:161. dočítaná kniha(reálne poradie by mala niekde medzi 130-145, len som si ju zabudla zaevidovať)

    17. Jacques Cazotte’s The Devil in Love is one of those books whose historical importance possibly outweighs its intrinsic interest. But it’s still an entertaining read.Don Alvaro is a young Spanish nobleman who dabbles in the occult. He summons a spirit, and gets more than he bargained for. What he gets is Biondetta, a beautiful young woman who claims to be hopelessly in love with him. Biondetta at other times appears as a handsome young page. Don Alvaro can hardy claim that he doesn’t know w [...]

    19. Finally! I finished this book. It took countless tries and one year long reader's block. This was so boring that I am left speechless. To have the devil as a main character and to make the devil bland and utterly boring is an art in itself.I actually got the reader's block because of this book (and my stubborn head to finish it).Not only boring , but also weird and not in the good way where we are surprised. Well not bad weird either. More like bland weird. In the beginning Alvaro was scared of t [...]

    22. I actually don't remember much about this book, so it's probably not fair for me to give it a rating. I bought it because it was mentioned in the fabulous The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte and I remember being a little bit disappointed reading this book after the excitement of the other one. Which is unfair of course, one is a modern mystery/adventure while the other is a very odd little 18th century fable aboutwelle Devil in love. I suspect I might enjoy it a bit more if I read it now with [...]

    23. I learned of this book reading the Dumas Club, in that story the Devil (also in the form of a woman) gives this book to the man she is trying to help. I loved the idea of the female devil attempting to seduce the man. This was short but very fun. The devil is highly amusing. I particularly liked how she taught him not to waste his money gambling without skill and acted most virtous in order to get him to marry her. I'm glad the ending was re-written as the longer version made much more sense.

    27. I came into this expecting something more exciting than what I got, which would typically be my own fault if it weren't about Satan falling in love with a man; just by virtue of its subject matter alone this novella should have been far more aesthete and engaging than it actually was. If it had been any longer, I probably wouldn't have bothered finishing.
