    1. 4.5 stars. The best in the series so far. Here the things, when I read Historical Romance, usually the author show us the wonderful life of those time. Not Ms. Perry thought, she show us the ugliness in those time and your life almost mean nothing if you were not the selected few upper class. However Ms. Perry's stories is not exactly romance, more like historical mysteries with romance in it:)

    2. Part Victorian Jerry Springer show, part clue-less mystery, but unfortunately, rarely believable, if I hadn't enjoyed this book's sequel, (and didn't have two more with me in English language book exile) I might be giving up on Anne Perry right about now. When I read a Victorian novel, I want the people in the book to act Victorian, dammit. Instead, if it wasn't members of conservative and respected Victorian families airing their dirty laundry out in front of complete strangers, it was very rec [...]

    3. As this series progresses, Anne Perry is going into some of the worst excesses of the Victorian age. This book centers on two aspects that were hotly debated at the time. The book begins with a terrible fire which kills the wife of a very outspoken local doctor. She had been quietly become involved in trying to breach a system of rental property law which allowed investors to charge extremely high rents for tenements in horrible conditions without anyone being able to tell who the property owner [...]

    5. I was manning the Book Sales table at a Friends of Ngaio Marsh event yesterday, and was encouraged to read the books--a subtle form of advertising! It seemed to work--we sold a good amount of books! This is the second Anne Perry book I've read, and I enjoyed the story, characters and mystery, although I found it hard to get into the story. The stilted style of the prose and the frequent head-hopping, while very true to the Victorian period, did stop me from connecting with the story as much as I [...]

    6. This one is about ideals and, as is usual, Ms. Perry shows many sides of the issue.I never put spoilers in my reviews.Anne Perry is a master of the written word. Every word, phrase, paragraph is placed for maximum effect. There is no filler or waste. She has obviously researched the era exhaustively. Her insight into the human condition is uncanny. There are always many layers to her tales. The main storyline is Pitt and Charlotte, his police work and the mystery of the case he's working on in th [...]

    7. All the things I didn't like in the last book are continued in this book and the plot just wasn't as engrossing. The WHOdunit was boringly stereotypical, the WHYdunit was just not believable, the great climatic scene was dumb and the emotion of the book was mostly forced. On the other hand, Thomas and Charlotte are still quite likable, their servant Gracie gets involved which is nice for her and Charlotte's introduction to this segment of society through her crotchety old grandmother was differe [...]

    8. There is a formula to these stories and part of the charm and interest is to see the growth and change in the characters, Charlotte, Thomas, Emily, and Jack. Each book and murder examines the contrast between the rigid grace and manners of the middle and upper classes with the lower, impoverished classes. Assumptions, judgments, prejudices on both sides play into the difficulty of solving a murder involving the privileged classes. In this one, an arsonist sets fire to a doctor's house in a prospe [...]

    9. A Victorian mystery featuring Charlotte and Inspector Thomas Pitt. Clemency Shaw, wife of a prominent doctor, has died in a tragic fire in the peaceful suburb of Highgate, apparently the intended victim of an arsonist. As Inspector Pitt searches for clues to the murder, his wife Charlotte uses her social connections to gather gossip about the Shaw family and to help him solve the case. Each book of the series (this is not the first, if you like to read things in order) addresses a different soci [...]

    10. Eleventh in the series. I particularly enjoyed this installment, because more and more of the secondary characters from earlier novels are being flushed out and many of them are helping out, at various levels, in the detection process of solving the mystery. Thomas and Charlotte are more openly and actively combining their skills and efforts in solving the case, too. Not so much an emphasis on social behavior details of the period in this novel as in many of the earlier ones, but the debate over [...]

    11. Charlotte and Thomas Pitt's maid, Gracie, has been admiring her mistress's detecting adventures for the past few books, but her participation in this story adds a freshness to the plot and the characterizations. Dedicated readers of the Pitt series know Charlotte, Emily, Thomas, and Great Aunt Vespasia so well now that new characters are always welcome additions to the cast.

    12. Often my response to a book is influenced by when I read it, what mood, how distracted I was, etc. In this case, I started Highgate Rise just a few days before my due date, and in fact I was two days early, going into labor just two days after starting this book. I didn't bring this to the hospital with me, since the book required more attention than I thought I would have there. (I brought an Ed McBain book instead, which was perfect.) But then it's taken me till today to finish, and it was jus [...]

    13. Clemency Shaw, the wife of a prominent doctor, dies in a house fire that was deliberately set. While Thomas Pitt investigates he wonders if Clemency or the good doctor was the real target for death.Clemency came from a great deal of money that she inherited from her father, a high ranking member of the church. When Clemency discovered how her father earned the money she decided to give it away to the most needy as those are who her father preyed upon. This information still made it hard to decid [...]

    14. I liked this less than the previous 10, but I will continue to read the series. There were too many philosophical rants of various kinds. As always, Perry picks a sociological problem, this time slum lords and the truly horrific conditions of poverty that exhisted in London. Pitt is sent to Highgate to investigate arson and a murder, and the local police do not appreciate a Bow Street investigator, but do come to appreciate him. There are many interesting characters introduced who I hope we will [...]

    15. I usually really enjoy Anne Perry's books, but this one just didn't grab me. I found the plot ponderous, and Thomas Pitt was sidelined for Charlotte, who's silly meddling just added nothing to the story. I struggled to finish it, couldn't have cared less whodunnit (and can't actually remember 5 minutes after finishing the book). I think she has a good formula, but has stretched it too far with this one. Sorry.

    16. Another look at late Victorian London life, this time delving into the horrors of slum life. This has the strengths and weaknesses of all Perry's books, and like all the others this is a good read, with an ending that just barely fails to satisfy.

    17. This series is my exercise read, and my usual complaint is that the denouement is too abrupt, but not this book. It was a head above earlier ones and very enjoyable. I love period pieces, and this Edwardian murder mystery doesn't discount.

    18. A gripping and enthralling storyThis story was very hard to anticipate as fast as its outcome. However I do find the relationships a bit difficult to keep straight.

    19. Not her best2.5 stars. It was a slog to finish. Just seemed stretched out with filler, when it could have wrapped up 50 pages earlier.

    20. It took me a few Anne Perry and Victoria Thompson novels to discover that the term 'mystery' has changed from how it was used let's say 10 to 20 years ago. Most readers might still associated a mystery novel with a puzzle and with sleuthing, but those terms rarely apply anymore to modern mysteries. Anne Perry is one of many contemporary authors who writes historical fiction with a romantic inclination, which is probably a better label than mystery. Granted, the reader does not know until the ver [...]

    21. Anne Perry is one of the authors I routinely look for at book sales, and so I read rather old titles such as this one from 1991. I like her Thomas and Charlotte Pitt very much. They are a loving couple who understand each other, and although Pitt is a cop and their income is low, Charlotte is originally from gentry and has family and friends from that class. This gives them unusual access to people of all walks of life. Charlotte "meddles" in Thomas' cases, but he values her input so unless she [...]

    22. After the wife of a doctor dies in a deliberately-set fire, Inspector Pitt is call in to investigate, incurring a bit of protest from the local police who think they can handle it. When a second victim also dies in a fire and the doctor was expected to be there, it looks like he's the one marked for death. He was an outspoken opponent of freedom of press and speech and enjoyed shocking people with his opinions. Pitt's investigations, as well as his wife's, which involve her Great-Aunt Vespasia, [...]

    23. I always enjoy the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels. I have read them in the past and now I am listening to the audible versions - which are excellent.

    24. As usual from Anne Perry, this was an engaging mystery. I wanted to know how it ended, and had perhaps better success than usual in working out the end before it became readily apparent. Thomas and Charlotte are always charming, and Gracie (the maid) was rather winning here as well.I did feel that this book suffered from the characters' being eager to expound on their philosophical, religious and political feelings. One or two people -- passionate, as many of these were -- who run off at the mou [...]

    25. As I read other reviews I can understand why some might have thought this novel was not quite as engaging as some of Perry's other novels, I was able to see into a society that is suppose to act one way and only one way. No one should know where the family money comes from or question it. There should be no freedom of speech or speak one's mind in this time period. Charlotte Pitt has a hard time with this - I would have a hard time in this period as well. This novel deals with people who own hou [...]

    27. Charlotte, Inspector Pitt, and family investigate the murder of two people in Highgate Rise. Was Dr. Shaw supposed to be the victim or was the arsonist trying to kill Mrs. Shaw and Amos Lindsay? Charlotte sets out to retrace the steps of Clemency Shaw, one of the victims of the arsonist, trying to uncover whether Mrs. Shaw’s work to change the slum conditions in London was the cause of her death. Everyone in Highgate Rise has secrets that they would prefer not to be uncovered, but would any of [...]
