    2. Simply brilliant book! This is the first book from Shivaram Karanth I have read and I am sure I will read many more of his. What a treat it has been to read it daily this week. The author portrays the nuances of Oleya, his name Choma's life with utmost skill. The book is about a dream of Choma to be a farmer instead of being a labourer in other's farm. And how he pays for it because of his simple dream due to discrimination by untouchability, society maintaining status quo etc.The brilliance is [...]

    3. Shivaram Karanth is a giant in Kannada literature, although Mukkajiya Kansugalu will be his eponymous work and would remain one of the prominent Kannada works, Chomana Dudi poignant allusion to Dalit lives immediately after Indian independence. Narrated like a story you hear in a train by an elderly person this story is more of conservation where you just nod to the narrator. The story is a typical Karanth subject dealt earnestly.

    4. No doubt that Shivarama Karanth is a Gnanapith awardee (the highest literary award in India). The flow of story is so gentle and smooth, one would want to go back and read it again and again. The episodes of the story are neatly intertwined which preserve the continuity.

    5. This is a very nice book. It tells the story of a Dalit person Choma whose only source of entertainment seems to his "dudi" (Drum) or a drink at the local liquor shop. The characters come alive and you start to feel the characters as the story progresses. In a very short novel spanning just 104 pages, the author deftly explains the life of a Dalit in India just after independence.I rated this at a four primarily for the way the author has weaved the characters and how he has conveyed the life a [...]

    6. Shivarama Karanth ensures that we never lose interest on the story. His writing grips us and motivates to read and finish it ASAP. He has penned the story of an underdog and made him a winner. Salute!

    8. The book astounded me by its relevance, decades after it was written. Then i realized that a brilliant work like this cannot be constrained by the bindings of time. No other book i have read has captured the dimensions of social strata as effectively as this one.

    9. This is an awesome short story by Dr. Shivaram Karanth. This story mainly deals with the untouchability practices of India and the story revolves around an untouchable person called Choma and his tryst with his villagers.

    11. We can see the Karanth narration clearly in this story. Short story with clear picture of a backward class family and their life in our society.

    12. Its Amazing book this book try to express the inner feeling of Choma and its express the mindset of an ambition personality (Choma) and sounds of dudi express variation of Choma's feeling.
