    1. If I never read another gothic book, I'll be very happy. It's probably me. And this is probably a great book. Or perhaps not. But these people? This life? Maybe I prefer my river called De Nile where life is good and not so god awful depressing. Read for the Gothic category in New Years 2017 Reading challenge and as a Buddy read with Priya, Gio, and Mariana. Setting / Time / Genre: RegencySeries: YepSexy times: I think so. Wait, I remember. Yes! Standard regency. Hotter than a Julia Quinn but jus [...]

    2. Holy hell. Can I give this book six stars? Paranormal meets Historical plus romance? This genre match up is one of the most genius things I've ever read. (Paranormal and Historical are my favorite genres) After reading what the book was about, I knew instantly that I would enjoy it, but I honestly loved it way more than I thought I would, which is really saying something. This book is beyond fantastic and definitely one of the best books I've read all year. The story is haunting and beautiful, da [...]

    3. Emme and RhysEmmaline "Emme" Walters is invited to Briarwood Hall to commune with the ghost of Lord Rhys Brammel's, Duke of Briarwood, late wife, Elise. It is rumored that Rhys murdered Elise. Emme doesn't like to admit to people that she corresponds with ghost. When Lord Michael Ellersleigh questions Emme about talking to no one in the gardens, she admits to talking to Melisande, whom she later discovers is Rhys murdered sister. From Melisande Emme finds out there were two murders and the murde [...]

    4. HEART WARMING STORY OF LOVE AND BETRAYAL!!I loved The Haunting of a Duke, the story of Rhys Brammel the Duke of Briarleigh and the Emme Walters, Medium and Mystic was fast paced, slightly erotic highly sensual and loving with on the edge of your seat action.Emme is invited to Briarwood Hall for the summer garden party by the Dowager Duchess Phyllis Brammel. She wants Emme to find out what actually happen to her deceased daughter in law Elise, becasue there are rumors that her son the Duke might [...]

    5. Quite a few reviews for this book said it was formulaic, and I would have to agree. It started out quite well, with four villains vying for the role as "Col. Mustard in the drawing room with the candlestick." Unfortunately, by the middle I had it all figured out, but still kept reading just to make sure. Chastity Bowlin does a decent job creating different types of despicable characters, so part of the reason to keep turning pages is to see them get their comeuppance. Probably my biggest issue w [...]

    6. *currently available for kindle for free*I was browsing the free kindle books at amazon, and stumbled across this one. I thought the premise of this sounded intriguing as it mixes several genres I enjoy: Historical, Paranormal, and Romance. Kindles freebies, in my experience, are more often miss that hit, but every once in awhile you find a gem. This is one of those.Emme, our heroine, has a gift: She can see spirits. She is asked to come to a house party by the Dowager Duchess of Briarleigh to as [...]

    7. Easy ReadEven though paranormal is not my preference, I liked the murder mystery story; but the writing style felt too easy.

    8. ***eBook available for free on ***The Dowager Duchess of Briarleigh invited Emmaline Walters to a house party to determine whether the duke had indeed killed his wife a few years ago and finally put the rumors to rest. But the late duchess isn't the only ghost in the house, and someone among the living will prove to be the most malevolent creature of all.I'm having trouble rating this one. The story was great. The suspense, the mystery, the ghosts, the living, good and evill mixed up in this his [...]

    9. This was an absolutely fantastic read!!! Emme has a gift, one that she tends to hide from others. She can see and communicate with spirits. She does not capitalize on this particular gift, rather tries to help people with it. She built a reputation that was large enough to attract the attention of the 'ton', which is how our story begins. Emme is at a party at the personal invitation of the Lady Phyllis, for the use of her special skills to help put to rest the mystery surrounding the death of h [...]

    10. An interesting read. The paranormal element is more interesting than the romance in my eyes. The romance is what you would find in mediocre historical romance novels, nothing spectacular or though-provoking, just 2 people who happen to find each other attractive and enjoy bedsport a lot. I was not very impressed with Emme and the duke. Emme could see spirits and communicate with them. Rhys, the duke, ran into her at his house party while Emme was in one of her "episodes". Rhys' mother invited Em [...]

    11. Great mystery and romance Rhys doesn't trust Emme as she is rumored to be a psychic. He believed that she must be a charlatan or a fake. He finds her in the night and he is drawn to her. He begins to worry about her safety after a medium is murdered. Emme is being approached by the ghost of a young girl. She wakes up in strange places in the house and knows she is being led to solve a mystery. A great cast of characters. I really liked Rhys and Michael. This is a very interesting book. I enjoyed [...]

    12. the lady who sees and speaks with ghosts is compromised by the duke and they marry. his sister was murdered as was his wife. who did it and why?

    13. I found out that "regency" and "dark" don't go well together for me. That's why I'm on the fence about continuing the series, even if Michael was my favourite character and his story is up next.

    14. Mechanically the writing here is fine, if painfully repetitive with certain phrases. But the whole plot, every single aspect of it is just so cliched and overused I can't give it any more. There is literally no aspect of this plot I couldn't have predicted just by thinking about what motive you see most often in this sort of book and which of the characters were described to match the most common idea of villainy. Plus, it could do with more editing. I mean, the epilogue appears twice in the Kin [...]

    15. This book is where it's at when it comes to Gothic romance. The writing and storytelling was flawless. I absolutely loved the characters and the murder mystery took me on a dark and intriguing tale of romance and deceit. This is one of those books I know I will reread again and again. A new favorite for sure and diving into book 2 straight away.

    16. Want a book that makes you want to savor every moment? Well, you're in luck. This book gave me just that.(view spoiler)[Emme has a "gift", what are the quotation marks for you askwell Rhys doesn't seem to think of her ability as a gift. He sees it as a curse, well when he finally believes her that is. (hide spoiler)]A book filled with adventure, secrets, betrayal, mystery and most of all love.

    17. I believe this is the first book I've read by Chastity Bowlin, but it certainly won't be the last. I do not normally care for paranormal books, but this combination of paranormal and historical is just perfect and I'm so glad I decided to give it a read. I assume it is considered paranormal because the heroine can converse with ghosts. I'm heading to just as soon as I finish this review to buy the other two books in the series!!!!You certainly have an engaging and odd mixture of characters cont [...]

    18. Far surpassed expectations. excellent storytellingI am an avid reader of Historical romances, mainly in the Regency era. However, they had become predictable and a bit boring to me. This book was the perfect solution to that. I still had all of the elements of a good Regency Romance, but with a delicious wide swath of paranormal and mystery. The storytelling is excellent, the author can spin a vivid yarn that comes to life in the reader's mind. I savoured this book and was sad to see it end, lik [...]

    19. I’m a simple person. I like my regency novels simple: a lot of romance and scandal, maybe some adventure- but that’s it. Mysticism? No. Magic? No. Fey? Nope. Vampires, werewolf’s, lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!)? Hell no. So imagine my surprise when I pull up this hunk from the depths of my kindle library; my initial thought, “WHY WOULD I EVER DOWNLOAD THIS?! Kindle, why would you do this to me?!” So here I am, hunkering down to engage in a battle of wills with this novel, and sudden [...]

    20. Okay I kind of loved this. Free bookbub historical romance. Sexy, well-written, interesting, minor twists on the typical historical romance plot and a well-done mystery with CREEPY interludes from the baddie's POV that were almost over-the-top.The version I had (Barnes and Noble e-book) repeated one chapter from the middle at the end and the epilogue twice, which was weird.

    21. I think that this book had just about everything I like in reading. It had some ghosts floating in and out of the story. Spooky! Murder and mayhem abounded. Exciting! And all of this happened in an historical time frame I love to read. Regency. It was a hot romance. Rhys and Emme did some burning up of the sheets! HOT! All of this in one book. Amazing! The characters were well developed, complete with issues and problems. Story was amazing and moved very well. Plot was believable and interesting [...]

    22. This story was so good it really deserves more than 5 stars. I was hooked from page one, I love a good HR but this was so much more. Murder, mystery, ghostly goings on, not to mention the sizzling attraction between Emme and Rhys I could not put this story down. I loved all the twists n turns which kept me wondering who the villain was and I was quite surprised. Add to this the Hot scenes and the love that blossomed between these characters while solving the murders made it an incredible story. [...]

    23. Stumbled across this book bought as a freebie some time ago and decided What the heck, let's read this without researching recommendationsST DECISION EVER!!!Totally enchanting. The mystery and ghost elements added intrigue without being too spooky for my Christian soul. LolThe pace was good throughout, was never bored. The sex was amazing. Detailed romantic sensual encounters without feeling like book porn. In the end I dived right into the sequel which cost a reasonable $2.99. No regrets

    24. A Gothic ghostly romantic suspense story in the vein of Mary Stewart but with a few detailed sexual encounters thrown in. Okay, I skip sex scenes so I can't really review those parts but the rest of the book was fantastic. Lots of red herrings and intrigue. A great blend of romance and suspense.Chasity holds the reader's attention throughout the novel, there's no sagging middle here, and it ends with the promise that you'll learn more about these characters in future novels as she explores the s [...]

    25. Freakin' awesome! So I saw this book for free on and was like - hey, free book, might as well try it. Of course, as it was a free book on , I really did not expect much from it. Totally wrong. This book was amazing! If you like historical romances - read it. If you like a little paranormal in your books - read it. If you like hot sex scenes - read it. Really, you should just read it.

    26. I really enjoyed this story - part Gothic mystery in a Jane Austen-like setting, part paranormal romance, it had engaging characters and a smart heroine. The author had me guessing until the end who the murderer was, and I hope that the introduction of the hero's friends means that there will be additional books following this one.I won this book in a blog contest from romancingthedarkside

    27. 3.8☆Surprisingly, not terrible! I downloaded it because it was free on and I love me some historical romances. The 'supernatural' element added something special. It is essentially a whodunit story and I guessed what was going on about halfway through, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable to read. A lot of sexy times, a fair amount of creepiness, sometimes it was even chilling. Not too shabby for a freebie!

    28. Terrible. All the horrible cliché's of a romance and mystery novel and the mystery is that there is no mystery at all. It's obvious from the start who the culprit is and what's even worse is that three grown adults couldn't figure it out Not that they tried! I couldn't finish it. Ended up skipping to the final few pages just to confirm my suspicions. This was absolutely not what I was expecting.
