    About "Max Frisch"

      • Max Frisch

Max Rudolph Frisch was born in 1911 in Zurich the son of Franz Bruno Frisch an architect and Karolina Bettina Frisch n e Wildermuth After studying at the Realgymnasium in Zurich, he enrolled at the University of Zurich in 1930 and began studying German literature, but had to abandon due to financial problems after the death of his father in 1932 Instead, he started working as a journalist and columnist for the Neue Z rcher Zeitung NZZ , one of the major newspapers in Switzerland With the NZZ he would entertain a lifelong ambivalent love hate relationship, for his own views were in stark contrast to the conservative views promulgated by this newspaper In 1933 he travelled through eastern and south eastern Europe, and in 1935 he visited Germany for the first time. From 1936 to 1941 he studied architecture at the ETH Zurich His first and still best known project was in 1942, when he won the invitation of tenders for the construction of a public swimming bath right in the middle of Zurich the Letzigraben. In 1947, he met Bertolt Brecht in Zurich In 1951, he was awarded a grant by the Rockefeller Trust and spent one year in the U.S After 1955 he worked exclusively as a freelance writer His experience of postwar Europe is vividly described in his Tagebuch Diary for 1946 1949 it contains the first drafts of later fictional works.During the 1950s and 1960s Frisch created some outstanding novels that explored problems of alienation and identity in modern societies These are I m Not Stiller 1954 , Homo Faber 1957 and Wilderness of Mirrors Gantenbein 1964 In addition, he wrote some highly intelligent political dramas, such as Andorra and The Fireraisers He continued to publish extracts from his diaries These included fragments from contemporary media reports, and paradoxical questionnaires, as well as personal reflections and reportage he fell in love with a woman called Antonia Quick in 1969.Max Frisch died of cancer on April 4, 1991 in Zurich Together with Friedrich D rrenmatt, Max Frisch is considered one of the most influential Swiss writers of the 20th century He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Marburg, Germany, in 1962, Bard College 1980 , the City University of New York 1982 , the University of Birmingham 1984 , and the TU Berlin 1987 He also won many important German literature prizes the Georg B chner Preis in 1958, the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels in 1976, and the Heinrich Heine Preis in 1989 In 1965 he won the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society. Some of the major themes in his work are the search or loss of one s identity guilt and innocence the spiritual crisis of the modern world after Nietzsche proclaimed that God is dead technological omnipotence the human belief that everything was possible and technology allowed humans to control everything versus fate especially in Homo faber and also Switzerland s idealized self image as a tolerant democracy based on consensus criticizing that as illusion and portraying people and especially the Swiss as being scared by their own liberty and being preoccupied mainly with controlling every part of their life.Max Frisch was a political man, and many of his works make reference to or, as in Jonas und sein Veteran, are centered around political issues of the timeformation was taken fromenpedia wiki Max_Frisch

Medikamente? Rat des Arztes: Nehmen [...]

    4. "Montauk" is Max Frisch' final novel in which the mature writer - he was 64 at the time - gives an account of two weekend trips with a relatively young woman he has only just met. This is not a story of romance. These are two people who happen to like and trust each other enough to spend a few days together, without the burden of expectations with respect to a longer term commitment. Two uneventful trips to Long Island form the backbone of the narrative. And Frisch sets himself the task to use th [...]

    7. This is definitely an example of expecting a book to be entirely different from what it is. The author expounds on every thought in his head. This is not a relationship, weekend-fling, brief affair with a younger woman book, although it seems like it should be based on the description and the cover. I think I would have liked it more if that had been the case. "Lynn will never get to know his hysteria."In fact the woman of note, a much younger woman who worked for a NY publisher arranging a tour [...]

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

    13. Montauk is an autobiographical novel. It tells from a lecturing trip of Frisch to the United States in 1974. In New York, he meets a young woman in her thirties. He is 63 at the time. They spend a weekend together travelling to Montauk. During this trip, he feels the urge to write about this presence. This is what Montauk is. A continous stream of consciousness on the trip with Lynn as well as a recollection of past events seen from 1974.It's a very personal book. Frisch doesn't refrain from emba [...]

    16. MONTAUK is an early version of the modern memoir, with a weekend affair serving as the frame for Max Frisch's life of relationships, marriages and the perspective of death you have in your 60s. It's purposefully disorienting, shifting from first to third person, often in the same sentence, as he tries to write about the present and past simultaneously. Character names are scarce, as Lynn turns to Marianne turns to Ingeborg, etc. Stylistically appropriate given Frisch's career as a playwright. It [...]

    17. I really struggled to get into this book, which I am reading for a book-group. Although we have been reading autobiographical works, and this is to some extent also autobiographical, it just seemed so 'self-absorbed'. I got through it. I did not particularly enjoy reading it. I did not feel in the least bit interested in the thoughts of a middle-aged author reminiscing about his life and loves whilst telling us about his brief affair in the USA. The best line for me was : "Sie kauft sich Schuhe [...]

    18. Like a slowed-down "Speedboat" or a 1970s "So Much for That Winter." More Manhattan than Montauk, more memoir than travel. A sixty-something man looks back on difficult relationships and friendships, while simultaneously preserving the details of a seemingly unimportant weekend fling. It's exceptional in its use of reflection and fascinating for the shifts from first to third person—a narrator in dialogue with his past selves. Also perfect for when you're bailing on everyone for a while, or wi [...]

    19. Had not expected to like this as much as I did. Possible this may get increased to five stars after some consideration.

    21. In the 1960’s and 70’s, Swiss writer Max Frisch belonged to the group of post-war “uber”-authors which included Nobel Prize winners Gunther Grass and Heinrich Boell. Whilst famous at the time for his widely popular allegorical political plays and three novels: Homo Faber, My Name is Gantenbein and I am not Stiller, his works have somewhat faded away in the minds of the reading public since his death in 1991. Not even an international film production of Homo Faber under the title Voyager [...]

    23. Caveat lector: I only read this because it features heavily in my winter reading, 'Martutene' by Roman Saizabitoria. That out of the way, this was quite dull. The idea is a nice one--report honestly on a hopeless love affair--but for the most part the honest reporting seems to have been a few physical movements, then some uninteresting thoughts, followed by more physical movements. I know very well that I'm not moved by this kind of thing; even Greene's End of the Affair left me cold. So, maybe [...]

    25. My rating is based on the level of my enjoyment of reading Montauk. No doubt the writing is beautiful, but the fragmented story, and voice constantly made me feel I was picking up a book and randomly reading any page in no particular sequence - at a loss of what was going on Who he was speaking of. The author claims he wanted to write a book completely removed from there being a reader. He succeeded. I respect that some may have embraced this experiment. I did not.

    27. Expected to read a story about an affair between Max Frisch and a younger woman who take a weekend trip to Montauk (and indeed it was a story about exactly that), but was surprised (in a very good way) to find some beautiful reflections on his relationship with Ingeborg Bachmann.
