    3. They say the truth is a bitter pill to swallow. Actually it is more than that! Reading this book as an extremely painful journey, in a way that exceeds your worst nightmares. I wasn't able to read more than 20 pages per day, not because of its richness with information but because my brain needed time to absorb all the atrocities. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! I think it's one of our responsibilities as humans to educate ourselves about the injustice in the world so we can be part of the change in the [...]

    4. The author's thourough and honest discourse is both immaculate and sobering. Pappe proves authoritatively that the actions by a group of supposed Zionists in Israel beginning in 1947 constitute ethnic cleansing. This perpetrated atrocity serves as a prototype for ethnic cleansing similar to that by the Nazis in Germany. According to Pappe, “(M)ore than half of Palestine’s native population, close to 800,000, had been uprooted, 531 villages had been destroyed, and eleven urban neighbourhoods [...]

    5. I first read The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe, one of the "Israeli New Historians" who looked at the archived materials from Cabinet meetings, politician diaries, Israel Defence Force orders etc after they were eventually released forty years after 1948. I read Pappe following the a challenge by an politically anti-Israel Jewish friend of mine who teaches in Philosophy at UNSW. I found Pappe's book painful as he outlined the atrocities committed by Israel - even though I was mindf [...]

    6. I thought I knew the history of Israel's annexation of Palestine but this was a totally shocking account! I can't believe Britain reneged so emphatically on its promise to allow the Palestinians independence. The UN also must be ashamed of its duplicitous role.Ilan Pappe is a Jewish academic who cannot be accused of anti-semitism. He just wants people to know what really happened. Israel is guilty of war crimes aided and abetted by Britain and the UN.It is particularly important to read this now [...]

    7. Zionist views have been overwhelmingly influential in the United States. "The Story of Israel" that I place in quotation marks to indicate its mythological nature, has been presented repeatedly, but most famously in the novel and movie, "Exodus". It is the story of victims struggling to an empty land where they make the desert bloom and stand proudly with weapons in hand shouting "never again".This appealing, heroic, justice-loving scenario is a fabrication. Ilan Pappé, an Israeli Jew, has, in [...]

    9. "An insightful and deeply disturbing account of the events leading up to 1947/48 in the Arab/Israeli war. Prior to reading this book I had always accepted the official Israeli viewpoint of an Israeli David fighting an Arab Goliath. Israel's constant wars against Arab nations after that seemed to be a continuance of that period in history.Until I read The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine that is. I've been a recent convert to the Palestinian cause after watching footage of Israeli tanks and gunships [...]

    10. This is the type of book wealthy hipster kids and trustafarians like to read to feel good about themselves. The book is incredibly manipulative and tugs at the emotional strings of clueless readers to indoctrinate them with anti-Israeli and Islamist-aligned propaganda. There are some truths in the book and there's no doubt Israel has had it's share of committing atrocities, but this book completely glosses over all of the atrocities committed by the Palestinians on the Christian Palestinians as [...]

    14. This book exposes one of the great whitewashes of post WW2 history, that Israel was a brave little nation, created by hardy pioneers who had to fight off Arab hordes who were bent on their destruction.

    16. Books like this need to exist, that subvert the accepted grand narratives and tell of a brutal history. This isn't to say that Pappé's analysis is perfect-- there is a tendency to read every action of the Israeli state as an extension of the 1948 expulsion of the Palestinians-- but it is blunt and forceful, and a scathing indictment of the tendency of the settler-state (something that the Americans, Taiwanese, and Australians are also complicit in) to re-write their histories.

    17. This book is amazing! I highly recommend it to people who are interested in Palestine and Israel conflict and generally in History. I'm not a good history reader but as I said before I start the series of book about Palestine and the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Which the title of this book is exactly what I was looking for. This book has a great in depth information and analysis of the process of ethnic cleansing. The fact that Ilan pappe himself was inside the system gives him a great unders [...]

    18. This is a history of the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing at Israel's founding that expelled close to 800,000 people, including 531 villages and 11 urban neighborhoods. It is an important reminder of why Zionism is racism and why the Palestinian's right of return is absolutely central to any just and viable peace settlement. This was a hard-hitting antidote to the Zionist propaganda I grew up reading. It is difficult to get through sometimes, both because of the massacres being described and because o [...]

    20. From the 'about Ilan Pappé' :"He blames the creation of Israel for the lack of peace in the Middle East, arguing that Zionism is more dangerous than Islamic militancy, and has called for an international boycott of Israeli academics."Hardly an unbiased author.

    21. In the epilogue to this text that is essential reading for anyone who wants to really speak on Palestine, Israel, or peace in the Middle East, Pappe writes, after mentioning massacres from 1948 to the present, “[t]here has never been an end to Israel’s killing of Palestinians.” (258) At this time, when nearly 2000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military, 75% or more civilians, over 450 being Palestinian children, and the Israelis have only lost 63 soldiers invading illegally [...]

    22. There is a bloc of humanity that will never read this book based on the title alone, and there is another bloc, that if they did read it, would immediately find great fault with it, assuming they didn't just write it all off as pure fictional propaganda. I read a lot of non-fiction and histories in particular, and this did not come across to me at any level as inflated hype, but rather as extremely well-researched journalism based on documents from "both sides" of the issues discussed, including [...]

    23. “Nakba Day (meaning "Day of the Catastrophe") is generally commemorated on 15 May, the day after the Gregorian calendar date for Israeli Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzmaut). For the Palestinians it is an annual day of commemoration of the displacement that preceded and followed the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948 [see for more goo/ofvP5]” Ilan Pappé’s The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine was a shattering read from one of the New Historians [see goo/5PbSIe] of the Israeli/Palestin [...]

    26. The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is a meticulously documented account of the campaign of the Jewish colonists in Palestine to forcibly expel the Arab population from the land now known as Israel. This conflict is obviously a hugely controversial subject, with a great deal of misinformation, ideology, and vicious ad hominem rhetoric poisoning most online review forums or discussions I've come across. I approach whatever I read with skepticism, and what I most enjoyed about this book was how its [...]

    27. A must-read to get a fuller understanding of the Zionist colonization and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian. A journey back in history to the heart of the Zionist project, the massively brutal and systematic massacre and land grabbing of the Palestinians inaugurated on a large scale in 1948. This is a violence that continues to be perpetrated by the Zionist State of Israel against the Palestinian people up to the present.

    28. Ilan Pappe's careful review of Israel's treatment of Palestine's native populations from the founding of the 'Jewish State' to the present exposes many of the falsehoods in the official historical narrative constructed by Zionism that pervades in the media and official rhetoric. Contrary to the claims that prevail in Israel and its national allies, the Zionist settlers did not 'make the desert bloom', nor did they inherit a 'land without a people'. In reality, most of the land which Israel now c [...]

    29. A book that I could not get myself to read in detail. I was looking for a broader overview of the history of the Israeli state and its policy toward Palestine, but this book provides a very detailed look at the very early history. My impressions from reading half and skimming the other half: Pappe presents an important categorization of the policies of the forming Israeli state as "Ethnic Cleansing" and that he provides good comparison to the oppression of Palestinians with the modern view of th [...]

    30. If you haven't already done so, you need to read this book, especially if you don’t have a deep understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The author is an Israeli professor at the University of Exeter. I think it should be read by Israelis and Americans in particular who are denied in large degree the real source of the Nakba. The fact that it's written by an Israeli makes it more powerful.I am still not entirely sure what made this book such a slow read and took me a long time to finish it, [...]
