I grew up in Edmonton and Calgary I started writing horse stories when I was 11 and historical fiction during my high school years In 1976 I returned to Saskatoon to attend university and graduated in 1980 with an education degree My first teaching assignment was in Lampman, and I have pretty much been there ever since I didn t have much time for writing during the 80 s because I was too busy getting married, finishing a BA, teaching middle years at Estevan Junior High, and raising two wonderful daughters However, in 1996 I was asked to write a student production, and the floodgates opened Thirty plays later, I am still writing for students and for my adult community theatre troupe in Lampman In 1999, I started a YA manuscript about girls hockey which Coteau Books published as Power Plays in 2007 Face Off 2010 and Breakaway 2012 followed Baker s Plays has published two plays Sam Spud, Private Eye 2007 and The Banes of Darkwood 2010 After 25 years in the classroom, I called it quits and started working for my husband in the oil industry In my free time, I love to read and write, hang out at rinks and ball diamonds, golf, ski, ride my motorcycle and of course talk about writing

    1. The final book in the Jessie Mac series was my favorite of the three, but again, the three feel so linked to me (perhaps just because I read them so quickly, all in a row!) that I’m not sure if this is a review of the book or the series. Jessie is now seventeen, and this girl is miles away from the fourteen-year-old in the first book. She is mature, sensible, considerate, and passionate about hockey. She worries about nutrition and staying in shape for games. All this is a pleasure precisely b [...]

    2. I'm a fan of local authors so this book was a treat to read as were the others in the series. Living in Estevan, most of the characters I can picture. A great series for young readers with timely topics covered.

    3. Fun, girly hockey story for teens, with a healthy dose of high school drama. Full review to come in Quill & Quire.

    4. Originally posted at canlitforlittlecanadianssAs hard as it is to believe, there are some people who have never embraced hockey as a Canadian life focus. I am one such person. My family never watched hockey when I was young. I had no brothers or cousins nearby whose hockey passions I could follow. And although I had friends who watched hockey, girls were not playing hockey when I was growing up. I never even went to my first hockey game until I was in my 20's. So reading and reviewing a book cal [...]

    5. Within 10 pages this book had already brought to the surface one of my pet peeves in literature: girls who use "boy talk" to sound cool, as in "I have to take a leak." While I am not a prude, I just can't possibly imagine a high school girl that I would recommend this to. Perhaps it is the cultural differences of American vs. Canadian teens but this would be a hard sell in my suburban school library. (Disclaimer: we also don't even have a boy's hockey team at our school so an entire series on gi [...]
