In fact it was totally useless to someone with a writing background like me. It gave some great examples of clear writing versus unclear writing. It's definitely worth reading a second time. It's brutally concise, clear and easy to read, and has lots of helpful examples of good writing and bad. For good writers, it's an effective refresher. For those seeking to improve, there are numerous suggestions to implement.


    7. This is a very good book on the basics of business writing. Most of it is common sense, but as the author duly notes, common sense is hardly common practice. There are at least a few good tips for even the best business writers out there.

Flowers' model quoted and described in Chapter 3: Madman, Architect, Carpenter, Judge. That made so much practical sense to me.I qualified my first sentence with the phrase: "in the most part".     11. Our leadership team is reading HBR's 10 Must Reads:On Managing Yourself (I recommend reading). So when I ordered that book I decided to get two other HBR books: HBR Guide to Getting The Right Work Done and HBR Persuasive Presentations. All are very good.     13. The book teaches some great lessons. And I have three awesome takeaways:1. Write in the interest of the reader. Nobody bothers to read otherwise.2. Always add in additional information if some of the recipients were not at the meeting. Minimally, to have a liner to sum up the main point of the last meeting.3.     14. Funny, educational, and easy to read. It's great when the reader can learn and laugh at the same time. I purchased this book for a writing class. I usually trade my books back for new books. I'm keeping this one. Garner has a way of informing and teaching that draws the reader in. He has a fun 'not this' 'but that', method of examples that's just fun to read. A great book with a wonderful index.


    15. I read this book because someone in one of my writing classes said that he had found it helpful. It's a great basic introduction to the composition process. It's also motivating. My favorite parts were the examples of poorly- and then well-written emails. There's just something soothing about seeing a hot prose mess replaced with something competent and to-the-point. I'll be suggesting this book to students.


    16. I think this is a great book, and it will be a good desk reference. It's also a really quick read only about 130 pages of text, much of which is bulleted lists and other examples. Last quarter of the book are appendices like "common grammar mistakes" and "editing checklist." For work, anyway, this is way more useful than Elements of Style.


    17. This is my new favorite book on writing for a professionals. Garner provides a structured approach that takes the reader through everything from why you're writing to how to edit various types of communications. I'm now using this as a training tool for my direct reports.


    18. I heard Garner on a HBR Ideacast just last week. He is very simple and straightforward in his approach to business writing. His latest book, the HBR Guide to Better Business Writing, is already helping me untie my sentences. I highly recommend this reference along with The Elements of Style.






    19. Content is meaningful and supported with several useful examples. Good to have on hand for quick reference.


    20. Very quick and easy to read guide to general business writing. Full of great examples of what not to do and what to do. I especially liked the appendices with common usages that are wrongly used.
